I wonder if the forum users group are big enough in number, to discount the purchasing of items.

EG they might enjoy the benefits of cut price deals on insurance of houses, or group travel.

Is it worthy of a new thread?

Can you add any other ways to benefit from forum clout(?)

Advantages of large-group purchasing-discuss.

From my perspective I would be uncomfortable using the forum to bargain for discounts. Being an open forum, people are free to post any opinion and many businesses get dealt quite a harsh hand (even if it can be accurate). Businesses which extend discounts would expect more positive reviews

I'm happier when businesses offer deals off their own back - such as when the FHT and Hoopers both put on free food spreads, and the EDT has always gone out of it's way to accomodate forumites at various events even when we've been too slack to get ourselves organised

If businesses are expected to provide discounts you willget people with the most tenuous links to the forum brandishing the name in the hope of getting summat for nowt

From the Drawing Room:

Re: NHS staff - 50% higher rate of sickies

That thread in particular has become very muddled as several different strands of the argument are now running in parallel requiring a lot of concentration to keep up with the different voices.

The problem arises because this forum displays messages in chronological order.

The solution is software that creates sub-threads as a debate bifurcates.

I don't know whether sub-threading is available as an option or a plug in - I doubt it, but it might be worth a mention here in case anyone else has any thoughts or views.

If this has been the subject of a previous discussion ? I apologise.

Personally I think it works well in chronological order. You can flow the ebbs and flows, witness strands digress then unite in concert.

I find any software based around replies, especially with collapsing and expanding and substranding to be unusably bad.

The forum does have some functionality to split threads or even merge them, but it doesn't work very well and splitting can be very artificial or even arbitrary and some people might find their voice suddenly stranded in a thread not of their choosing.

I know it's far from perfect, but much of the popularity of the forum stems from it's simplicity of use and it's uncluttered nature. If it ain't broke...

We cross-posted. Just editing this to say that the systems I'm referring to carry out the sub-threading automatically - there's no need for manual splitting (although that is often available as a separate facility).

The whole idea is to clear up confusion - well, from the forum user's point of view. I'm sure implementing such a system on the admin side isn't a cakewalk.

Fair enough. I've been spoilt by nearly twenty years with sub-threaded news readers on Usenet newsgroups. I guess this format, arcane as it seems to me, is simple enough for everyone and does the job well enough.

Hi I run a small animal boarding house and was going to advertise that we have space for guinea pigs over Christmas, however I am in Crystal Palace. I do pet sitting and dog walking in the East Dulwich area as I used to live there and that is where the majority of my clients are hence being a member on the forum. Can I post on here even though my trading address is my home address in Crystal Palace?

Kind Regards

Sarah & The Goldfish Team.

Sarah

I can't answer your query but will say "thank you" for being an exemplery business in asking permission before just randomly posting.

If only more would read the rules first and then ask questions (like you) the forum-world would be a happier place.

Bravo.

because Sarah is pretty much in the right place I'm guessing. Admin will see it

I think David was just doffing his cap to good manner - nowt wrong with that

But Sarah can always contact Admin directly via the link below if she doesn't get an answer on here

Dear Admin

In the classified sections, could we make it a rule that people should not post lots of individual ads, particularly for related items, but should group them into one ad? Over the last couple of days, in both the for sale section and the family classifieds, the front page has been almost entirely taked over by individuals selling clothes or baby items via lots of ads that could easly have been put into one advert instead.

Thanks

Trinity

    • Where did I say he did a good job? Yup and Corbyn was very close to Len McCluskey and funded by Unite wasn't he...they're all as bad as each other... Labour have to purge their party of the far-left - they're a disaster. Allan Johnson summed it up so well on election night in 2019....
    • Thank you for the detailed advise @trinidad It is definitely damage we are concerned about. I don’t think Evri would agree to pay the bill to fix our gate or letter box if they were to be damaged as a result of their delivery drivers helper. Our doorbell can be heard from outside when rung so we don’t quite believe the aggressive simultaneous door/letter box banging is necessary. It can be quite a shock it is done very aggressively.  I’ll definitely action the steps you’ve kindly provided along with a phone call tomorrow. I do sympathise with the role drivers have and how busy they are, which is why we tried communicating directly with her but sadly we haven’t succeeded
    • What outcome would you like? Disciplinary action? Not to have the driver back? Retraining? I know there is alot of pressure on drivers to deliver within a set day. if he slams the gate, is it evidence he is causing damage, or is the noise a irritant to yourself? You could put a sign up or buy a signing asking to close the gate gentle???? can you hear the door bell from the door? he might be ringing, not hearing and therefore knocking. In trhe notes section of the be livery page, there is a note section, although there is not 100 per cent these notes would be read as these drivers are constantly rushing.  I did a google search for you, i found this and you can try the envri website Contact Us | Evri   To complain to Evri, you can follow these steps: Contact Customer Service: Call Evri's customer service at 0330 808 5456 for assistance with your complaint.    1 Write a Letter: Address your complaint to Capitol House, 1 Capitol Close, Morley, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS27 0WH.    1 Use the Official Website: Visit the Evri complaints page on their official website for detailed instructions on how to submit a complaint.    2 Email or Call for Specific Issues: For issues like missing or damaged parcels, you can email or call 0800 988 8888, which is free to call.    1 These methods will help you effectively communicate your concerns to Evri.   My driver is called anthony, he is brilliant to be honest. I cant fault him.
    • When I have more time and energy, I will look up the actual number of votes cast for each party in that election, rather than the number of seats won. I'm interested to see that you apparently  think that  Boris Johnson did a good job of "leading the country through Covid." Is your memory really that short? I won't stoop to calling Johnson and his cronies names in the way that you seem to think is appropriate for left wing politicians. At least the left wing politicians have some semblance of morals and a concern for people who aren't in some over privileged inner circle and/or raking in money for themselves on the back of an epidemic. I'm not going to open a can of worms on here  by commenting on the disgraceful so called "purge".
