I wonder if the forum users group are big enough in number, to discount the purchasing of items.

EG they might enjoy the benefits of cut price deals on insurance of houses, or group travel.

Is it worthy of a new thread?

Can you add any other ways to benefit from forum clout(?)

Advantages of large-group purchasing-discuss.

From my perspective I would be uncomfortable using the forum to bargain for discounts. Being an open forum, people are free to post any opinion and many businesses get dealt quite a harsh hand (even if it can be accurate). Businesses which extend discounts would expect more positive reviews

I'm happier when businesses offer deals off their own back - such as when the FHT and Hoopers both put on free food spreads, and the EDT has always gone out of it's way to accomodate forumites at various events even when we've been too slack to get ourselves organised

If businesses are expected to provide discounts you willget people with the most tenuous links to the forum brandishing the name in the hope of getting summat for nowt

From the Drawing Room:

Re: NHS staff - 50% higher rate of sickies

That thread in particular has become very muddled as several different strands of the argument are now running in parallel requiring a lot of concentration to keep up with the different voices.

The problem arises because this forum displays messages in chronological order.

The solution is software that creates sub-threads as a debate bifurcates.

I don't know whether sub-threading is available as an option or a plug in - I doubt it, but it might be worth a mention here in case anyone else has any thoughts or views.

If this has been the subject of a previous discussion ? I apologise.

Personally I think it works well in chronological order. You can flow the ebbs and flows, witness strands digress then unite in concert.

I find any software based around replies, especially with collapsing and expanding and substranding to be unusably bad.

The forum does have some functionality to split threads or even merge them, but it doesn't work very well and splitting can be very artificial or even arbitrary and some people might find their voice suddenly stranded in a thread not of their choosing.

I know it's far from perfect, but much of the popularity of the forum stems from it's simplicity of use and it's uncluttered nature. If it ain't broke...

We cross-posted. Just editing this to say that the systems I'm referring to carry out the sub-threading automatically - there's no need for manual splitting (although that is often available as a separate facility).

The whole idea is to clear up confusion - well, from the forum user's point of view. I'm sure implementing such a system on the admin side isn't a cakewalk.

Fair enough. I've been spoilt by nearly twenty years with sub-threaded news readers on Usenet newsgroups. I guess this format, arcane as it seems to me, is simple enough for everyone and does the job well enough.

Hi I run a small animal boarding house and was going to advertise that we have space for guinea pigs over Christmas, however I am in Crystal Palace. I do pet sitting and dog walking in the East Dulwich area as I used to live there and that is where the majority of my clients are hence being a member on the forum. Can I post on here even though my trading address is my home address in Crystal Palace?

Kind Regards

Sarah & The Goldfish Team.

Sarah

I can't answer your query but will say "thank you" for being an exemplery business in asking permission before just randomly posting.

If only more would read the rules first and then ask questions (like you) the forum-world would be a happier place.

Bravo.

because Sarah is pretty much in the right place I'm guessing. Admin will see it

I think David was just doffing his cap to good manner - nowt wrong with that

But Sarah can always contact Admin directly via the link below if she doesn't get an answer on here

Dear Admin

In the classified sections, could we make it a rule that people should not post lots of individual ads, particularly for related items, but should group them into one ad? Over the last couple of days, in both the for sale section and the family classifieds, the front page has been almost entirely taked over by individuals selling clothes or baby items via lots of ads that could easly have been put into one advert instead.

Thanks

Trinity

    • But there's a case for advisory guidance at least, surely? It's a safety issue, and surely just common sense? What do other countries do? And are there any statistics for accidents involving cyclists which compare those in daylight and those in dusk or at night, with and without street lighting?
    • People travelling by bicycle should have lights and reflectors of course. Assuming they do, then the are perfectly visible for anyone paying adequate attention. I don't like this idea of 'invisible' cyclists - it sounds like an absolute cop out. As pointed out above, even when you do wear every fluorescent bit of clothing going and have all the lights and reflectors possible, drivers will still claim they didn't see you. We need to push back on that excuse. If you're driving a powerful motor vehicle through a built up area, then there is a heavy responsibility on you to take care and look out for pedestrians and cyclists. It feels like the burden of responsibility is slightly skewed here. There are lot's of black cars. They pose a far greater risk to others than pedestrians or cyclists. I don't hear people calling for them to be painted brighter colours. We should not be policing what people wear, whether walking, cycling or driving.
    • There does seem to be increasing use of an unofficial cycling get up which is black trousers, black jacket, black headgear (not usually a helmet) which makes cyclists and electric motorised cycle riders effectively invisible at night.  For example, a number of cycling delivery drivers seem to choose this get up.  It is their choice but it's a risky choice and a difficult one for a rational person to understand.
    • Help us mark a decade of local journalism and ensure the next ten years of The Dulwich Diverter! To pledge, please go to: tiny.cc/dd10 Since 2016, The Dulwich Diverter has been telling the stories that matter in East Dulwich, West Dulwich, Dulwich Village and the surrounding neighbourhoods.  Stories about the independent traders, the everyday heroes, the corners of SE22 that wouldn't normally make the front page. In early 2026 we hope to reach our 10‑year anniversary.    Why this campaign matters: Free, local journalism in print is under pressure. The voices and stories of our community deserve an ongoing platform and your support will help ensure that platform remains vibrant, independent, and thriving. What we’ll do with your support: With your pledge today you will help us to keep going for the next few years, produce a special 10‑year anniversary print edition and host an event to celebrate 10 years of the newspaper. A bit more information about us: Through reading our newspapers, people have become involved with local charities and good causes they may otherwise never have known about. We rely solely on advertising sales to keep us in print. However, this year has been a somewhat bumpy ride for many local businesses who have been regular supporters of the paper hence us needing to crowdfund. All revenue raised helps us pay our contributors and fund the professional journalism and high quality photography, illustration and design that are the hallmarks of the titles we produce. The more money we have, the more stories we can publish and every single page of advertising is thoughtfully matched with a page of high quality and engaging editorial  (“all killer, no filler” to quote one reader), which increases reader “dwell time” and ensures that people linger on each spread for longer. We personally hand deliver every single copy of the newspaper and we have a diverse range of stockists to ensure we reach the whole of the community, not just one part of it.  You can find us in all sorts of places, from laundrettes, libraries and hair salons to shops, pubs and cafes. We believe local publications should truly reflect the areas they cover and we strive to represent the incredible diversity of south-east London on our pages.  We invest a huge amount of time and effort in seeking out stories that no one else has written about and sharing them with our readers. We aim to appeal to everyone in the area; those who have lived here their whole lives and those who have just arrived. We have readers of all ages – from 9 to 99!
