M&S would be better than Waitrose. But if we had a Waitrose, would we be able to order John Lewis 'click and collect' orders to it? If so, I would like both!!!

I would be sad to see Iceland go however, it is useful for frozen fish and picking up cheap veg late on a Sunday afternoon if Coop is closed. But I would much rather have an M&S.

I seem to be in a minority of one in that I actually quite like the Co-op, both the ambience of the shop and the fact it has a decent range of the essentials on those days when I don't want to do battle in Sainsbury's.

Yes it would definitely have John Lewis order collection. It would also have a toilet paper rental service, and a chorus of singing cats.

I also like the Co-op. I think the food on the whole is very good. There is a pretty good range of staple items, their bakery bread is delicious and many of the ready meals are very tasty. I can walk there instead of driving to Sainsbury's.

Agreed and M&S food is plastic wrapped plastic, totally overpriced garbage.

oh LondonMix, who knew such an innocent question of 23 April could reignite such passions which have been quietly hibernating over the winter months.......

I vote for keeping Brissi in the old East Dulwich Deli (have developed a cushion and soft lighting addiction), opening a Prada (spring collection of shoes, hats, handbags and trans-seasonal trousers) in lieu of John Barnett and a Prawn-Mayo-on-Brown-Bread-with-corners-cut-off Sandwich Shop in the old "Golden City" on Whateley Road

On your marks.....

M&S is replacing Iceland. They are both large chains selling food so your point makes no sense.

In the end, people who are supportive of M&S opening probably want to buy the goods M&S sells...

Small business owners on Lordship Lane have come on in support of the application as they think it will be good for the retail footfall of the high street.

You think? I reckon it will do a roaring trade.

I think M&S believe that they will have enough costumers to pay the rent the landlord is proposing and still make a profit that rewards the business risk / investment they are making. I believe Iceland do not believe they have enough costumers to pay the rent the landlord is proposing and still make a profit they find acceptable. I believe if M&S are wrong, they will close down and another chain supermarket will take over the space.

I think James said they were calling the application in.

James do you have a date when this application will be heard?

They won't be wrong - ED'ers love overpriced stuff - it will be a great success.

Um really? It's a myth & quite the opposite I think. Very few ED twits like overpriced stuff lol. I certainly don't. I do love a good bargain though. ps I'm from ED but not a twit :0)

No, I don't think they should use the same staff, as much as I do like most of the staff that work on the tills at the mo, the management is awful, a nightmare.

I like Iceland and M&S and wish we could have both. However, cheap does not necessarily mean good value. Expensive does not necessarily mean overpriced. Much of M&S product is expensive because it is sourced in a superior way to Iceland (origin, quality, sustainability, organic, environmentally considerate etc). If these things are important to you, and you have the money to pay for it, then M&S can be expensive but not overpriced. Likewise, Iceland can be cheap because it makes compromises on these things. Which is fine if cost is your most important consideration. Different strokes for different folks.

As for staffing, in all likelihood, M&S will want to provide the best staff possible to ensure customer happiness and consequently their success. The usual process would be to advertise the roles and allow existing Iceland staff to apply. Then interview all candidates and select the best people for the job. This may well be the existing staff if they are good.

I intend to travel to Peckham for Iceland and get stuck in to the M&S meal deals - ?10 for wine, a side, a main and a pudding for 2. That really is good value for money.

    • ?????? I have read through this thread and I am totally bemused. It had previously seemed to be a helpful thread, and I  don't want to send it any more off topic by responding to the last two posts by other forum members. Could someone (or admin) please PM me if they think I have stepped out of line and explain why, as recent comments seem to be directed at me and have nothing to do with the subject of the thread. This is a forum, and as in real life people are all  different, with different personalities and sensitivities, and react in different ways,  but the direction this thread has taken is very disappointing. ETA: If the two previous posters want to discuss the points they have made which aren't relevant to the subject of this thread, perhaps one or both of them could start a new thread or threads in the lounge? But probably this thread has come to an end  anyway. Thank you to the other posters for your useful information.

    • I totally agree with jazzer having been “jumped on” by various members.. I try and help as that is the sort of person I am, but now will try hard  to just read and not reply.. was down right hurtful to have a comment made along the lines that as I was no longer as person supposed, in ED and moved somewhere else should just leave group. No longer sure what sort of people are on this group - certainly not as pleasant as it was 15 years  ago when people were pleasant, helpful and some things were a joke and much more  light hearted. Everyone has a right to their own opinion as it is a public forum- meaning anyone can join from where-ever but c maybe I have got that wrong as well / doesn’t matter as I will probably leave…
