giggirl
I had a rotten experience there last summer (which I reported on the forum at the time) and haven't been back since. I used to go there most Fridays (ever the Catholic) so it's their loss. I won't go back. Rolo Tomasi
Well it looks like they are making strides to get the quality back up to scratch and they should be commended for that. Give them another chance that's what I say. When I moved to Liverpool I was convinced they were all freaks the first time I went to a chippy with Scousers and Mancs. There I was in threshers week, and they're all ordering bloody gravy on their chips!!! I wanted to run back to London there and then. However, once I was convinced to try it I became a true convert, just as I did when a scouse girl I used to work with convinced me to order a sausage & cheese sandwich from the cafe! (tu)Another popular thing in chippies in the pool that I don't see down here is Potato Scallops... They were yum! Jeremy
Potato scallops... round slices of potato battered and deep fried. I sometimes used to have those in Liverpool too, but they were absolutely filthy! But my most memorable culinary memory from Liverpool was getting a Chinese takeaway, and being asked if I'd like "half and half": which turned out to be half egg fried rice and half chips. Siduhe
Kind of back on topic...We've had take out from the Sea Cow a few times recently. Fish has always been good - couple of times when they haven't had what we planned, we've followed a recommendation and really enjoyed the results. Chips aren't of the same standard - undercooked and a bit limp.If Paul's up for a bit more constructive criticism, I did want to mention something that happened the only time I have eaten in the restaurant (mid last year). I tend to pay my food bills and leave a tip in cash rather than on a card. The bill came to ?26 odd and I handed over ?30, expecting to get my change and then leave most/all as a tip. In fact, my change wasn't handed back to me but put automatically into the tronc without any indication from me. I mentioned it to the waitress, and her response was, "oh, sorry, most of our customers just expect us to keep the change". She immediately offered to give me my change back, but I'd actually been planning to give it to her anyway. Just rankled a bit that she'd made the decision for me and made me feel like a cheapskate for considering giving less than 15% tip. We've not been back to the restaurant. DanRigby
Dear All,Paul and I have listened to all you comments and we are now taking firm action. One of the comments was putting Coley on the menu. We are now trialing Coley in the restaurant with the aim to scale back Cod in the near future. You can pop in at any time and try a piece of Coley, all you have to do is ask a member of staff and they will be happy to cook some for you. All members of staff have been made away of the comments posted on this site. Improvements to the restaurant will take place over the next month or so. Feedback cards on the tables for customers to fill out after there meal, these will be relayed to the staff after every shift. This will improve motivation, boost moral and if the comment is not great, we can improve.I will be spending allot of time in East Dulwich from now on getting things back on track and restoring the confidence of the Dulwich masses. If you would like to have a chat about anything discussed on this site please pop in or you can call the restaurant direct on 0208 693 3111. jimbo1964
Hi DanI'm going to give you a try. Coley is delicious and I'm sure it'll be a hit.. you just need to persuade people to try it. Maybe put sweet potato chips on the menu too. *Bob*
Like Cod, only not as nice. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/2344-whats-happened-to-sea-cow-lounged/page/3/#findComment-71887 Share on other sites
lozzyloz
Does it taste more fishy and therefore need to be disguised in a curry, fishpie/cake etc? (Stupid question but you know what I mean.) *Bob*
The majority of recipe uses you see for Coley tend to be for pies etc, yes.. though I'm sure this is a much to do with the abundance and cheapness of Cod in the past.. something that isn't the case any more. From what I can remember (my Mum used to buy it sometimes) you don't get the same smooth flakes of fish like you do with Cod, and the flavour is a little more bland, but well-cooked Coley and chips is nicer than poorly-cooked Cod and chips. It's a lesser fish than Cod, no doubt, but I expect this will be reflected in the price.. especially as the price of Cod keeps going up. And up. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/2344-whats-happened-to-sea-cow-lounged/page/3/#findComment-71892 Share on other sites
jimbo1964
It's slightly meatier than Cod but well cooked in a nice crispy batter it's rather tasty.. Maybe the good people at Sea Cow will do taster portions for people to try. Asset
I think the chap already said if anyone wanted to go and taste some coley the staff would be glad to cook it up for them. I took that to mean a free taster.
