Are TV ads supposed to engender violent repulsion?

Thank the lord I have a Tivo box and can mostly avoid seeing any meerkats but seriously does anyone like those cheeky little chaps? Or do you just want to rip off their faces?

I mean because of that fat bloke I will never, ever, ever use gocompare.com.

Is that really what the agencies intend?

Which are the worst TV ads?

the ad agencies are doing their job very well for comparethemarket and gocompare

the majority of people looking for a comparison site for insurance will immediately go straight to those websites- as those are the ones stuck in their heads

deliberately awful ads get people talking about them and therefore make for great product awareness

I was a TV buyer for many years and had to buy space for many campaigns including this doozie for 'Fruit n Fibre', featuring Ross Kemp twatting around with a rubber golf club.

Of the current bunch, BT's agency have done a remarkable job in making the students in their campaign as self-important and slappable as real ones.

Go compare.

The commercial - which launched the insurance comparison site's new 'Saving the Nation' campaign on Monday (July 2) - features the BBC's Wimbledon anchor Barker firing a large rocket launcher at opera singer Gio Compario (Wynne Evans) in an attempt to kill off the face of the brand.

The current Vodaphone ad with bloody Yoda makes me scream. The woman on the train is doing a crossword with the clue "Excuse". Yoda says, "Most cryptic". No it isn't, Yoda - it's a straightforward clue, not bloody cryptic. Then he suggests "Apologise" as the answer - which fits! That's not a synonym for "Excuse". If the agency is going to spend millions hiring out an annoying green dwarf alien from George Lucas, the least they could do would be to spend another hundred quid on a proper bloody crossword.

The thing that annoys me the most about that Maggi ad is that at the end they say the word Maggi, and pronounce it "Maggie", when for 30 odd years I have thought it was pronounced "Madgie".

I caught my kids singing "Go Compare" the other day. Worst for me was the radio advert... We buy any car, dot com.

I LOVE the John Lewis ads....this year and last years one was also fab!

In terms of ads we hate.....be grateful we are not in the States - with their droning infomercials! Every two bloody minutes!

    • Anyone can deliver for Evri - my daughter having just passed her driving test tried Evri to make some money - they basically give you a route and as many parcels as they think you can cope with - you make money for each one you deliver, so you can imagine - speed is the priority. Why would they wait for you to answer the door when they can just throw it and take a photo? If you have a choice, choose a different courier service or shop elsewhere where they do.
    • Boil - it’s the customer’s fault, not the delivery person’s.
    • A bit of a long shot but I'm on the lookout for a portable pop-up counter or podium.   The kind you often see on a high street, used by charities or utility companies to advertise their wares.   I've included a photo to give you the idea. I'm a peckham-based artist and am looking for one for a free (and non-profit) community art project.  It can be in any workable condition and can already have signage on it as we will remove and redecorate ourselves.    Thanks in advance, Linzie
    • No I absolutely did not - that much is clear. Have you read the latest stories about Unite, Len and the hotel in Birmingham? The UK electorate were smart enough to reject a far-left party in 2019, let's hope they are smart enough to reject a far-right party at the next election too. If not we are all doomed.
