I was drawn into an ad tonight on the box where a new man moves into the family house and the teenage son resents it. But it all ends nicely in McD's

Rather than put my fingers down my throat I thought I'd rant about it on line.

I have been to McDonalds three times in the last quarter of a century. In 1991 in Budapest as I could get a cup of tea with milk in it. Around the same time in Windsor to have one of their ill fated vegi burgers. And in 2000 I had some curly fries in Mexico City. Now I remember I did have something meaty after a Siouxie and the Banshees concert at the Birmingham Odeon in 1984.

I am not after debate about how unecessarily maligned McDs are (it's just capitalism, we get what we want). I am just interested if anyone in SE London has been there less than me.

Sometimes if I'm desperate I'll nip in and use the toilets. That's how I see them; as one big giant toilet. It often feels like something is going to kick off in there. Once, about 14 years ago, my friend drove me to that drive in one near Streatham when I was extremely drunk. I wouldn't eat one sober.
I had a veggie burger/ fillet of fish in McD's every Monday eve for 10 weeks about 20 years ago- it was the only place to get anything to eat at 7pm in Wandsworth before I started a class. I have never eaten in one since- but I would if I had no other choice. I think I would have greater trust of the hygeine in a Mcdonalds than in some indpendent places. I would not eat the chicken or meat there.

So odd. As if not going to McDonald's conferred moral stature.

It's not food, it's FUEL. Predictable, uniform, fast.

Useful on a late-night drunk when one doesn't wish to provoke multibacterial gastritis with the choices at a scabby kebabi. Useful on a motorway when one is trying to get somewhere quickly. Useful when infanticide looms (for SO MANY REASONS) and one wants to avoid provoking children's finickinesses.

Mickey D is an apple, Simpson's-on-the-Strand, Nobu, Angels and Gypsies are oranges. Sometimes the circumstances call for an apple.

If you can arrange your circumstances so that you never need eat an apple, hurrah! Enviable you. I'll keep at hand my walletful of BIG MAC WITH FRIES ?1.99 coupons from Metro. Just in case.

Went to the one in Streatham about 25 years ago because we took the kids to the ice rink as a birthday treat. Had

some sort of awful dry cinnamon doughnut and a cup of 'tea'. Never been in one since, BK sweet chili chicken wrap

is ok and their 5 bean burger (do they still doit?) without the cheese.

I wonder why the McD in Forest Hill shut down and why no others have?

    • There’s a line of stationary buses with hazards on ,from East Dulwich Grove to  Goose Green roundabout blocking traffic so it has to use the wrong lane at the zebra to cross the roundabout. No idea why.
    • Digital rubber necking ?  That's a meaningless phrase. The OP merely was seeking information.
    • Reviving this to say that Palais is now up and running.  We went to a night there yesterday.  It is a first floor bar with cocktails and space for a DJ.  That I think is intended to be a quieter space for an older/more chilled crowd.  There is also a basement club space that can hold 500, it has an amazing sound system. The communal areas are still a bit rough and ready, they still need to do some replastering and painting on the stairways and there is currently no functioning lift.   But generally it was well run and thoughtfully restored. It was good to see the space back in use and it feels like a good addition  to that end of Peckham. Interestingly, showing a shift in night time cultures, there were signs about not using mobile phones and everyone had to get a blocking  sticker put on their phone camera lens before they were allowed in.
    • Great shout. They do need the extra fat when it’s winter, but don’t use fat balls from April as they are dangerous for nestlings as the babies can choke on lumps of the fat. When it gets milder switch to suet pellets as they are harder and don’t melt (the grease is bad for feathers.
