There used to be a Co-Op on LL years ago, became the job centre and now Ladbrooks.

All that's left is the pharmacy and the funeral directors (which doesn't show much faith in the pharmacy)

An article in The Daily Mail yesterday cited Co-op's bid for Somerfield. They've apparently been thrashing out the details between themselves for months and is nearing completion. Whether this means that the Somerfield brand would go or whether all their stuff will be rebranded under the Co-op it didn't say but I can't imagine all of Somerfields sourcing would disappear, so whatever happens I'm sure it'll be much of a muchness.

Yes, I remember the Co-Op, used to do some shopping there yearrrrs ago. It was a bit grubby as I remember but there was no option, well other than Somerfield (then Gateway, which was also a bit grubby).

deal has been signed but is subject to OFT clearances which could take until late September. I would have thought this would remain a CO-OP, unlikely to be a forced disposal in this area and the site seems to fit pretty well their strategy

Correction to my previous post, it's William Hill not Ladbrooks on the old Co-Op sight.

The following quote is from Peter Marks, CE of Co-Op, on their web sight.

No, I have not lived here long enough to remember a Tesco on Lordship Lane. But I'm willing to wager you cheerily greeted its departure as evidence of the terminal decline of this failing retailing sector.

budgens used to also be 7-11, remember that expensive shop? back in the days, it was one of a few shops that opened 24hrs. in fact, i think they were the only shop that opened 24hrs!

co-op used to be where william hill & that estate agents is presently.

gateway was the now somerfield, i was lucky enough to have worked there!

As supermarkets go, you won't find one more ethical, to staff or suppliers, than the Co-op. It's a very ED kind of store. Not sure how the quality of the produce measures up against the others though.

The original Co-op in the block where the Co-op chemist is was destroyed by a V1 in '44; killed dozens.

I think Iceland used to be Bejam, not Sainsbury's, freezer centre?

But I don't think the one in East Dulwich actually sold freezers, just frozen food.

Or possibly my memory is even more crap than I thought it was :))
