An article in The Daily Mail yesterday cited Co-op's bid for Somerfield. They've apparently been thrashing out the details between themselves for months and is nearing completion. Whether this means that the Somerfield brand would go or whether all their stuff will be rebranded under the Co-op it didn't say but I can't imagine all of Somerfields sourcing would disappear, so whatever happens I'm sure it'll be much of a muchness.

Correction to my previous post, it's William Hill not Ladbrooks on the old Co-Op sight.

The following quote is from Peter Marks, CE of Co-Op, on their web sight.

"For The Co-operative Group this is a transformational deal ? cementing our position as the UK?s premier community retailer and helping us significantly as we lead a renaissance of The Co-operative brand. Together, The Co-operative and Somerfield colleagues will be better placed than ever before to provide consumers with great choice, value and service."

Does anyone else find this over the top corporate speak worrying or is it just me..

budgens used to also be 7-11, remember that expensive shop? back in the days, it was one of a few shops that opened 24hrs. in fact, i think they were the only shop that opened 24hrs!

Worrying - how so? As statements go, it's not aggressive or world-dominatory. You worried for the future of your green shield stamps?

As supermarkets go, you won't find one more ethical, to staff or suppliers, than the Co-op. It's a very ED kind of store. Not sure how the quality of the produce measures up against the others though.

The original Co-op in the block where the Co-op chemist is was destroyed by a V1 in '44; killed dozens.

I think Iceland used to be Bejam, not Sainsbury's, freezer centre?

But I don't think the one in East Dulwich actually sold freezers, just frozen food.

Or possibly my memory is even more crap than I thought it was :))

    • I highly recommend Temi as a very skilled and reliable painter / decorator based in the East Dulwich & SE London area. She has completed many jobs for us over the past 10 years at our property on Overhill Road SE22 and also on Harlescott Road SE15, and we have always been thoroughly impressed with her work. We often leave her with keys and leave her to work her magic, fully confident that she's 100% trustworthy and will always do a fantastic job. If you're looking for a trustworthy local decorator who delivers exceptional work Temi is a great person to call. I'm not affiliated with her or her business in any way and actually found her through a recommendation on the ED forum over 10 years ago, i just like to recommend really good tradespeople who deserve a thank you.
