I went tonight for the first time to Pretty's Tapas on Northcross Rd and it was terrific! I definitely recommend for dinner. Apparently they are open until 1am.

Tough one. Evans have really good selection of bike so that's a plus. Balfes are more niche/specialist, selling what they believe to be the best bikes. Had nothing but brilliant service from those guys and am told they're about to increase the stock of genesis bikes to near enough full range which is excellent. Suspect Balfes will need to up its game a bit in terms of other stock and maintain they're excellent service.

Choice and competition is a good thing. Keeps us all on our toes.

Above Evans is flat, achieved under the permitted development changes I think.

To reply to the query about Peckham Market - I went and it was excellent. In the playground of Harris Academy, very well organised and colourful with music, lots of people and good quality products - from Sardinian cheeses to a plant and flower stall. Worth a visit. Quite expensive, but pleasant Saturday outing.

Sorry if this has already been addressed in this thread, but does anyone know where Mel has gone? She had the fabulous pastry shop on Choumert Rd between Rye Lane and Bellenden Rd called Southerden's. I knew she was moving to new premises but where? when? I'm going into serious Choumert Bun withdrawal...

She's moved production to Maltby Street and is now supplying Selfridges (and maybe others).

They were planning to keep the Peckham shop running, they'd just done a refurb to remove the k!tchen and provide extra seating... not sure what happened. Shame.

That's what I thought too... Her website says "the cafe is now closed, new premises opening soon" but nothing more.

Selfridges is a bit far to go for a mid-morning pastry treat :( and it wouldn't have her lovely self to talk to either.

So Foxy's initial negativity once again becomes reality...

Could of saved them the trouble and the money and the time it took to set up.

Not glad its closed. Not feeling smug. Some things are just not thought though.

Like I said elsewhere I had a business in Uplands Rd in 1993 based on a whim.

It did not work out so I went back to what I know. Electrical Engineering and telecoms.

So I understand more than most what its like to fail.

You cannot build a business on the whim of a few people guaranteeing to use your services

and saying what a 'Brill' idea it is and pledging their loyalty.

The Pub part did not attract custom and I don't think there was much effort to make it a comfortable

place to drink.

The food got some positive comments but not enough people could afford to eat there or went back.

Wont be the last place to fail.

Gosh, you really are full of the joys of spring, aren't you?

You might say that you're not glad or smug but you are making sure everyone knows "I told you so"

I'm sure local businesses must be so happy to hear that!

Can't you try and be a little more positive?!

Did you not read all of my post ??

I've been there myself..

and therefore know what I'm talking about.

Too many people here suffer from selective reading.

Well on a somewhat more positive note, I've heard from Mel Southerden that the reason the old shop closed is that their lease ran out, but they'll be opening somewhere in Bermondsey in the new year. Probably still too far to go for a pastry treat tho... :(

And perhaps selective hearing on your part Foxy? Seriously give it a rest - I'm sure you're a decent guy at heart but you're spoiling all of these threads for the less miserable majority.

People accuse me of wanted to live in the past and resent change.. and then say I happy to see businesses fail.

Well that does not make sense.

I want local businesses to thrive and not be constantly closing down and changing hands.

That is not being Negative.

Some here would be happy for Iceland to close and be replaced by something they want.

Well there are many people in ED that do not post here and like Iceland as I do.

EDF posters do not own ED.

I think we have enough food outlets and very few service shops.

Dulwich DIY being one of them. and a very good shop it is too.

We have lost most of our pubs. EDT being the only real pub left on LL.

I hope it does not change like the others but fear it may well do in the near future.
