...bet

?10 @ 40/1 on Porto to win the champions league (whatever year that was) from the start of the tournament. I've had more lucrative bets but that's the longest odds bet I've won on. Picked them on the basis of their uefa cup win over Celtic the previous year.

Best comedy stand up I've seen is Jason Rouse (not for the easily offended mind).

Best bike ride, Autobahn between Frankfurt and Mannheim (155 mph on a Suzuki Bandit).

Best smoke, White widow in Amsterdam.

Best holiday, Canada (working holiday, surveying expedition in the Yukon territory).

Best shag, not telling!

My mum used to smoke hash and my dad still secretly suspects that she still smokes it. I came home from school once and the whole house reeked of the stuff and my mum was caned of her face attempting to read the paper so me and my brothers bombarded her with arkward questions, herboids hate that.
have to agree with Peter Luger's Brooklyn. Sawdust on the floor,Mafia guys on the corner looking out for who knows what, cash only no credit cards ( unless you are a made man and have a Peter Lugers card ) and melt in yr mouth steaks. Yumm

Go to Wassini, the first coral reef area to be protected by a marine conservation order in 1976. I went there in the late 90's and was completely blown away. The reefs were (then) pretty much unscathed and there is natural beauty beyond belief...

Alternatively, go to Dahab (gulf of Aqaba), I stayed at the Coral Coast Hotel, ?20 per night (last year's prices), right on the best reef area, lovley people and 10 mins walk into Bo-ho Dahab... oh... take me there...

Ah Dahab. A memory returns. I was driven there once from Cairo by a policeman "contact" of mine. It was a late night, red-eyed spur of the moment decision when he decided he wanted a swim in the ocean. As he piled confiscated alcohol into his car he told me we'd buy our drugs once we got there, because of all the road blocks we'd have to pass on the way.

But we'd have to be careful, he added, because the locals would assume he was f*cking me and would get a bedouin to plant opium on us as punishment. This would lead to a minimum 25 year stretch in a local prison if caught. Plus extra for the alleged sodomy.

I didn't take any opium or annoy any locals. Which I think was probably his aim. He did bring a gun with him though, just in case. "For bandits". The only time I saw him fire it was when Cameroon scored against England in the football. He asked me if I wanted to fire it when England scored. But I assured him I wasn't English.

And no, reader, I didn't f*ck him.

There was a 45 year old German divorcee in the next hut to mine with an Egyptian boy who looked no older than 14. They definitely were f*cking. My policeman took a large swig of Egyptian brandy, exhaled hashish smoke through his wet lips, and told me that us foreigners were ruining his country. It was not the beginning, as they say, of a beautiful friendship.

hhhhmmmm... it was not like that when I was there Ted Max. Except, now I come to think of it, over 100 armed Sinai Beduines stormed a German hotel on horseback for not paying 'local' taxes (no, I am not joking), as the penisular is ruled by the Sinai Beduines. The hotel got closed down and all the guests (who were treated with the utmost politeness and gentleness by the Beduines) were move to other accommodation

(the things that happen while you are traveling, eh!).

Yours is fantastic story, sounds like you've got the beginnings of a good a novel...

It's been good reading these!

But Margate seafront featured twice and that's just weird.

In fact I rode there yesterday, so beautiful.

Best chat up line: was unspoken. The guy sat opposite me, put the forefinger of his left hand on the table, and put the finger of his right hand roughly 10 inches away from it. He looked at me and grinned as if to say "impressed"?

And yes I did and yes it was.

Best motorcycle road - Haast to Wanaka south Island New Zealand.

Best prawn cocktail - one I made yesterday!

Most enjoyable celebrity moment - Being approached by Holly Willoughby for Streetmate in Southampton. She's lovely she is.

Most entertaining celebrity moment - Recognising (and subsequently meeting) Ken Hom at Waterloo Station. He was drawing cash out...and I was quite disappointed he didnt have his wok on him.

Best drink... Ethiopian gin (@ ?2.00 for 1.5 litres) drunk with loads of ice, fresh limes and tonic,

while sitting on a rooftop over looking the Gulf of Aqaba and the most starry sky you have ever seen...

shooting stars everywhere and it was not the gin 'talking'...

best steak...... Rump cooked on the BBQ yesterday

Best ride....... NYC ---- Sturgis for sturgis05 , riding 1340 fat boy HD

best drink..... 1st cold beer after 13 hours of riding.

    • My understanding is the "free event" is 100% Gala, nothing to do with the council. Obviously Gala will still make money from the food & drink that they are trying to coerce punters into buying on their social media posts. Their costs will be negligible due to already having the infrastructure in place for Gala. So Gala are trying to appear community minded by providing this "free event", but the real goal is to set a precedent for a fourth day's festival - which surely no one could possibly object to?!? - in preparation for applying (again) for two three-day festivals spread over two weekends. It's only another two days, right, and the site & equipment is already there, so why would anyone object?!? More money for the council, much more money for Gala, win-win right? But yet another week of our park taken away from us, too, and another 18,000 people trampling & littering the park, and another week of disturbance for the native birds & wildlife...
    • Meson Don Felipe on The Cut was my go to place for many years. Though it's now many years since I was there. 10-15 minute walk from the Tate. If you go can you tell me what it's like nowadays?
    • Doubt you would have got much change out of £150.00 for battery and certainly having forked out for it, best to use your car. I recently sold  my car via webuyanycar.com - very pleasant experience & was roughly what I was expecting. Pop your bangers reg jnto their website to get an idea of price - they do send e mails once a fortnight/month just as an aid for you. Easy enough to delete - don’t even have to read valuation. They literally buy any car - if you can’t get it to them, they will charge you to get it there or recommend a co that will do it for you. Must say, mine was a 2014 reg and whilst a bit suspicious, paid extra to get money into my account as needed it for next car but was assured funds had I not gone down route I took would be in my account within 5 days. I now live in the country - every time I have been back to Dulwich and surrounding area, normally get a fine for driving at wrong time or parking at  wrong time so if I drive now, park in West or East Dulwich and do everything else by public transport and walking.  Were I still to be living in ED then before I left was pondering this very issue but since I have been back regularly for health reason I no longer drive but take the train and then buses, walk or Uber. Much cheaper than running a car and had I stayed, that would have been the course I would have taken. I don’t go out everyday, have an allotment or job to go to or family so in my case, would be cheaper not to have a car.  Was truely shocked   at the cost of second hand cars…..but where I now live only has a smattering of buses so no choice but to have wheels to get from A to B etc.
    • If you don't use the car often then suggest disconnect the battery between use by undoing the earth (negative / minus sign) cable from the battery and the battery will then last longer between use. Remember, central locking, alarm, clock, etc won't work with battery disconnected and wit ours I have to lock the doors with central locking before disconnecting battery as only have key on one door (leave bonnet open before locking doors). Hope this helps
