Favourite real Ales or lagers

BigPhil... do you have restrictions on what beers you can stock or are you well and truely a "free house" i.e free of tie too?

If so, could I recommend the Pilgrim Brewery run by Dave Roberts in Reigate, Surrey. He's a top bloke with a great range of beers from his award-winning micro-brewery. He's an old acquintance so I always give him a plug. His beers really are ace though.

Yes we are a true free house.

We are actively looking for local ( kent , surrey, sussex ) small breweries to source our ales from.

as for lagers we are thinking paulaner , okachim , becks vier , and my Girlfriend wants the strawberry beer Frulli in as well, if only for her and her mates. all to be confirmed when we take the place in 2 weeks , after a small clean up and refurb ( nothing too extreme)

Good choices Jah, all of these but not so keen on draft Stella or canned Red Stripe these days. The former as a result of too many bland 'laaarger' pints and the latter as a result of too many carnival weekends where warm Stripe from a street vendor and a skunk spliff has sent me home from the party early.

For me Harvey's, Timothy Taylor - Landlord and Ram Tam although I haven't seen the latter for about ten years. Funnily enough I had a Courage Best for the first time in decades a couple of weeks ago and it wasvery good.

The key is often how well it's kept. It can be the best bitter in the world but if you don't clean your pipes properly....

I had some of this stuff knocking around a few years ago, but I didn't care for it much. But I ended up sticking a can in a "beef and ale" casserole and it worked a treat.

For lager is has to be Keo from Cyprus. It is delicious, but tastes better drunk sitting in the sun. Bitter - Wobbly Bob brewed by Pheonix, it is pretty lethal though.

Good call on the Keo TP. I always used to drink that when I was in The Vineyard at the bottom of Camberwell Grove but I haven't been there for a few years now.

i am simply getting some feedback from this and other sites which is helping me get a feel for the area. ( i havent lived here for 6 years now)

I'm a bit of a fan of Youngs Beers .... I had about 6 pints of Waggle Dance on tap a few years ago and I had never been so pissed or ill .... how I managed to get home from Wandsworth that night is anyones guess , but get home I did . apparantly I fell off my chair in the pub about three times .... I don't remember a thing .

As Keef said Becks is vile - but as a 4% drinking lager it's preferable to the competition. Very few draught lagers get me excited... poor as the service is, the M&B pubs (Plough, Dog, Phoenix etc) have the best selection and usually very well kept

As a sidenote, BigPhil is an example to any newcomer (business related or not) in how to join a forum. The Albert is not the easiest pub for me to get to but his whole demeanor makes certain that I will be visiting in the coming weeks

Apart from John Smiths I think that Carlsberg is just pointless. 3.7% isn't enough. I remember drinking 15 tin of this 'beer' and it didn't even get me pissed (well perhaps a bit) and the next morning my farts were soooo powerful I could feel them blowing against my ankles.
