Maybe people should actually pay attention to all the evidence rather than drawing conclusions from newspaper headlines

Reminds me of when I did jury service and these 2 old dears said surely the police wouldn't have brought it to court if he wasn't guilty - thankfully sanity prevailed amongst the jury as otherwise we'd have sent a perfectly innocent man to prison

So, No, money hasn't talked but ill informed opinions quite clearly do

Yeah, all those people who think OJ may have been guilty should just listen to that jury! You make me laugh Matthew, because nothing you've ever typed on here suggests that you'd be taking this stance if it was a Chelsea / Man U player in this story!

I agree with Anna / Ted, this is a storm in a tea cup, no biggy in the grand scheme of things, and had it not been a famous footballer, the incident would never have happened. However, it still doesn't sit right with me, that he can basically get away with punching someone, whilst 7 other blokes are going to have to "take the fall" for him.

Still, if you have mates from Huyton, you're going to get in to trouble occasionally.

Actually he didn't say 'Do you know who I am ?' to the bloke he hit. He said 'Who do you think you are?'. He's very lucky to have got off as self defence is very difficult to prove in court, especially when you admit to throwing the first punch. I once was jumped by two blokes out for trouble. I defended myself very effectively and certainly didn't throw the first punch, however I ended up getting charged and convicted of assault.

While plenty of blokes get into scraps all the time and lots of them get away with it, I do know (and know of) guys who have been charged because they've got into fights. So I don't agree that it wouldn't have been taken to court if he wasn't famous.

Yep... how Gerrard could possibly be less guilty than his mates is beyond me. If anything, he seemed like the instigator.

Gerrard said he was given permission by the bar's manageress to pick tracks on the stereo - and when he asked the DJ, the DJ responded with "You are not putting no f***ing music on in here".

Gerrard later returned to speak with the DJ

"I asked Marcus what was the problem with the music machine and why he treated me like that. Very quickly he came off the bar stool and was in my face right by me. I firmly believed Marcus came towards me to hit me."

Keef you might have a point about bias on this case as the DJ was previously reported as a Man United fan... all swings and roundabouts really, either way the Jury have decided and the Judge has backed it up.

Fact is, from the outside the "not guilty" decision looks dubious. None of us were there that night, so really can't comment. He has been found "not guilty" by a court of law - therefore in legal terms he is innocent.

What a lot of people fail to realise is that Southport is the home to a lot of Mancunians and apparently Gerrard gets no end of grief when he is out in that area. Not saying it's right, but sometimes people just snap. I know I've done it.

Be honest, with that footage - can you really tell who is who? The reaction of whatever happens next it not also one (that I would believe anyway) of someone that is saying they won't play a song request. Who knows what was said.

I also think that had the DJ not changed his story 3 or 4 times he might of had a stronger case.

It is worth pointing out that all but one of the others who pleaded guilty were involved in a separate incident after Gerrard had left, and the other was Doran, who clearly struck elbowed the guy before anything else started. As I understood Gerrard's evidence he thought Doran had been hit, and thought Mcghee was going to hit him, so hit him first....three times. In my experience of these types of cases it largely comes down to the impression you make on the jury from the witness box, and they gave Gerrard the benefit of the doubt. I suspect he benefited from not having a reputation as a dirty player as well as his generally positive image, but thta's fair enough.

The one definite benefit he would have had was that the trial was in front of a very senior judge who would not have 'put the boot in' in summing up, as he may well have been tempted to do if it was A N Other pleading self-defence having hit the bloke three times!

    • Here is another article from the excellent Special Needs Jungle (SNJ) with tips for responses to the SEND conversation survey. Including shoe horning in EHCPs which they "forget" to ask a question about in the conversation. And living as we do in Southwark with the huge misfortune of 100% academy secondary schools, some thoughts on this and how unlikely inclusion in mainstream is within the current education landscape. Closing date 14 Jan 2026. And please consider a donation to the excellent entirely run by volunteers SNJ. In my view the government could save money by creating some smaller mainstream secondary schools for kids who can cope in primary school but not  with the scale of secondary, and need a calmer less busy setting. The funding would have to be different - it is currently on a per pupil basis which favours larger schools. But it would undoubtedly be cheaper than specialist provision, and the huge cost to individual children and families (emotional and financial) and to society. https://www.specialneedsjungle.com/tips-help-complete-governments-send-conversation-survey-law/ If anyone wants to take a radical step to help their struggling child, my tip is to move far away: these are the best two schools I have ever visited and in a beautiful part of the country. I only wish we'd moved there before it was too late for my son who had to suffer multiple failings at Charter North and then at the hands of Southwark SEND, out of education from February to October in year 10-11, having already suffered the enduring trauma of a very difficult early life, which in combination with ADHD made his time at schools which just don't care so very unbearable for all of us. https://www.cartmelprioryschool.co.uk/ https://settlebeck.org/ As an add on, I would say to anybody considering adoption, please take into account the education battles that you are very much more likely to face than the average parent. First you have schools to deal with, already terrible; then being passed from pillar to post within Southwark Education, SEND, Education Inclusion Team, round and round as they all do their best to explain why they are not responsible and you need someone different, let's hold another multi-agency meeting, never for one minute considering that if they put the child at the centre and used common sense they would achieve a lot more in much less time without loads of Southwark employees sitting in endless meetings with long suffering parents. It is hard to fully imagine this at the start of your adoption journey, full of hope as you are, but truly education is not for the faint hearted, and should be factored into your decision. You'll never hear from people who are really struggling and continue to do so, only from those who've had challenges but overcome them and it's all lovely. And education, the very people who should be there to help, are the ones who make your lives the most hellish out of everything your child and you face.
    • It’s a big problem all over London. I’ve seen it happen in Kennington and Bloomsbury in the last year. I think there has been some progress recently with some key arrests, but you do need to be very careful when walking around with your phone out, especially, as you say, if wearing noise cancelling headphones. Sorry you experienced this
