Channel 4: Dispatches - The true cost of cheap food
giggirl replied to david_carnell's topic in The Lounge
I don't believe that supermarkets give a toss about consumers. Really. So long as they tread on just the right side of legal and so long as they don't get any bad publicity, they're fine with whatever crap they have on their shelves. They're all competing on price at the moment so I fear that getting them to eat a whole 0.7p per sausage worth of profits is a non starter. Sounds like an interesting programme though and I hope the message snowballs. -

Actually he's spot on - pretty good description of Alpha at Holy Trinity Brompton. I also didn't get my coffee served by Jonathan Aitken but we had one of the Kray gang in our group - a most charming man I remember.

I did the Alpha course about 8 years ago at Holy Trinity Brompton with Nicky Gumbel himself. It was a very positive experience. I liked the people I met. There?s a lot on this thread about ?exploiting vulnerable people? but that just wasn?t my experience. I found a lot of people asking a lot of questions. At the time I did the course I was stuck in a rut and wanted to shake things up. At the end of the course I had a new perspective on many things but it didn?t turn me into an evangelical Christian, and they didn?t seem to mind. I'm Catholic by birth (Irish on both sides), but, like so many catholics, I really couldn't stomach the hypocracy. Our local priest was very hardcore. For example, he refused to baptise the babies of parents who didn?t regularly attend mass, but on Sundays he would be sure to remind us that only those baptised could enter the Kingdom of Heaven. At the age of five I can remember trying to fathom this out. And what about all the little Chinese and African babies who had never been baptised or even heard of Jesus? I lay awake at night worrying about them. Seriously. No wonder there are so many ex-catholics. I don?t belong to any religious group today. Organised religions scare me (probably because of my upbringing). I just don?t? see God in them. I am still asking questions though. People who don't ask questions also scare me.

How did it go HB? I thought of you this morning, all excited and clicking away. Are you sorted with your seats?

I'm a very very lucky girl and have only just returned from an extended stay on the West Coast (LA / Santa Barbara / Carmel / San Francisco). It's winter there. Basically, what this means is that sometimes you need to put a sweater on over your T-shirt. They think it's cold. They need to come to ED to find out about cold. Bless. I was gone so long that I desperately started to miss ED. I wanted a monty minor and a decent brand of gin. The first day back I skipped down Lordship Lane like a two year old. Then I ran home and put on a warm vest. I'm looking for somewhere warm(ish) to go March/April. I'm avoiding anywhere that has the Euro. Dubai sounds good - I'll be watching this thread for holiday ideas.

She won an award last night so trade has been brisk. Still tickets at Seetickets and Ticketmaster though: http://www.ticketmaster.co.uk/artist/961001/?search_redirect=florence&tm_link=tm_header_search https://www.seetickets.com/see/event.asp?e|artist=FLORENCE+AND+THE+MACHINE&resultsperpage=20&filler1=see&filler2=top40

There is some brilliant tactical advertising by Veet in today's Daily Telegraph (page 4). I can't attach it because the PDF file is too big but it's a big pink ad with the Veet logo which says "Goodbye Bush". Boys, you may need to ask your girlfriends.

Today I'm plugging the Royal Festival Hall's Ether Festival 2009. This is one of those little jewels that can pass you by if you're not on the ball. Here's the link: http://www.southbankcentre.co.uk/festivals-series/ether "Ether is a festival of art and technology that places a strong emphasis on cutting-edge collaborations and visual culture. Past festivals have featured Kraftwerk, Jonny Greenwood, Jim O'Rourke, Dizzee Rascal, Matmos, Squarepusher, Goldfrapp, Terry Riley, Pere Ubu & the Brothers Quay, Morton Subotnick, Harmonia, Radiosoulwax and the Warp Works series , in which the London Sinfonietta collaborated with artists from Shefflied's legendary Warp Records to explore the connections between contemporary classical music and modern electronica."

Today, I'm bigging up Florence and the Machine 'cos she's a local girl (Camberwell) and I think she might make good. She's playing the Bloomsbury Ballroom in May and you can buy your tickets now from Stargreen. http://www.stargreen.com/find?Q=florence+and+the+machine This is lovely http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=s0ZPTFfpO40

I thought you might be more than a little excited. Hammersmith is a great venue if you have good seats - otherwise, not. The venue is very wide, so it's important not to be stuck at the extreme sides; otherwise the view is a little skewed. Can I suggest you print off the Theatremonkey seating plan and have it in front of you when you're selecting your seats. The monkey does not lie. http://www.theatremonkey.com/seatingplanindex.htm

What is it with drivers and pedestrian crossings in this country!!???

Nero Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Just stride out and look purposeful. Don't > acknowledge them, either. It's the law that they > have to stop. Nero, how are you still alive? Seriously. Strawbs, don't listen to Nero! There's no point being right if you're in hospital. I will place one foot on the crossing and only venture further once the oncoming car (and the one behind it) have stopped. I think they should take the zebra crossings away and replace them with lights. I've been here long enough to remember when there were zebra crossings outside of Iceland and further on up by the police station. I have much more confidence in the lights; and they only take a few seconds to turn red once you've pushed the button. -
He had such a quiet and gentle way about him too. Lots of presenters from that era were loud in every sense of the word. TH was the quiet man - and we loved him.
