Rosie, You will find that your mum gets a lot of support from her local community. A community tends to rally when it is threatened. I remember a few years ago there was an armed robbery in the sub-post office on Crystal Palace Road (since closed). George and his wife were held at gunpoint whilst a riddiculously small amount of cash was taken. They were very elderly at the time and also the sweetest, loveliest people you could ever hope to meet. I have very fond memories of George serving small children with sweets and treating them as though they were his most important customers ever - magic. Anyway, this crime had a real effect on anyone using the shop so I am sure your mother will feel the support of her whole community. Years ago I once stood up to a robber armed with a knife. I told him exactly where he could put his knife and saw him off. Brave? You think? About an hour after the event I started to shake and cry. I am so glad your mum is alright Px

Has anyone mentioned The White Stripes yet? I like Jolene though - I tend to sing along with that one when I've had a few. Bon Jovi - goes without saying. Blur - take this year's prize for "unwanted reunion" surely Eminem (has he died?) The Killers - I don't quite get them Most of the so called "indie" bands that have been launched in the last few years. Unimaginative and pointless. The musical equivalent of reality television.

It's not that I've suddenly got an urge to bore ED with a travelog; it's just that I'm on my own and having a strange experience and for the sake of my sanity I need to share. I've been in California since the end of last year. Presently I'm driving from LA to San Fran to meet up with some friends for the weekend. I've checked into a hotel and I think I may have stumbled upon the campest place ever; Hotel Camp in Camp City on Planet Camp; otherwise known as The Madonna Inn, San Luis Obispo. Except that, and here's my point, they don't seem to know it. The entire place is pink (even the sugar is dyed pink) and, without any trace of irony, they just say ?well that's how we do things at the Madonna Inn?. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madonna_Inn Check out the website. Check out the rooms. For the record, I'm staying in The Lucky Rock room. How can I describe it; tiger-print carpet, a bed the size of Mexico with a headboard carved from the rockface (thank God I'm not actually anticipating a shag tonight because safe sex it would not be), a huge flatscreen TV hung on the opposite facing rockface, a leather sofa with leather cushions edged in feathers of some kind (ostrich?), a bathroom carved out of the aforementioned rock face with a Hollywood style mirror. And to think I left home without my fur bikini. Dam. Everything at the Madonna Inn that isn't made of rock has been painted pink. Really. Everything. No matter how camp the photos on the website look, believe me, in the flesh, it's a hell of a lot camper. I'm typing this from the bar (pink of course), looking at a black and white photo of Phyllis Madonna with John Wayne no less. It's just surreal. Here's my room; come up and see me some time. Please. http://www.madonnainn.com/rooms/134.php But if I ever come back here I'm bringing a stud and staying here. http://www.madonnainn.com/rooms/137.php Oh, and here's the restaurant. Pink enough? http://www.madonnainn.com/steakhouse.php If anyone in ED would actually like some pink sugar then please let me know and I'll send a care package. Anyway, amuse yourself for 5 minutes and pick out a room for yourself at the Madonna Inn: http://www.madonnainn.com/features.php Madonna Suite anyone? God I wish I was at home.

OMG, how am I going to get to Selfridges now. The will to live is slipping away from me. -
BBW, obviously you're a very naughty boy and that was very Charles Bronson of you. I would pay hard cash to see an action replay.

In my 20s and 30s I needed 8 hours a night. In my 40s I can manage on about 5. Someone recetly told me that I was "getting a bit like Margaret Thatcher". That person is currently residing beneath my patio with a large bump on their head.

Hello and welcome Cypriot Turk. My best friend is Cypriot Greek. I have no idea how many nurses in ED but 34 seems like a well researched and reliable figure so I would go with that.

Well done honey. It's taken a lot of time and hard work to get where you are and you certainly weren't handed anything on a plate. I hope you're proud of yourself. You're officially a role-model now!

I adore Roxy Music; all that glamour, Tokyo Joe, Kiss and Tell, Both Ends Burning. Just thinking about those songs makes me want to put on my highest heels and go party.

Maybe, but LA Woman is my favourite 'driving around at 2am in the morning and trying not to fall asleep' song of all time. Cranked up to 11 of course. Try it.

Keef, I turned the other cheek when, with the new year still only about 5 minutes old, you took a pop at the Pixies. Obviously that was just the thin end of the wedge and now you venture to knock Nirvana. And this from a man who does Bon Jovi covers. Luckily for you my evening has been fuelled by several strawberry mojitos so I've already forgiven you. That's how big I am.

What about a swap meet? I quite fancy DulwichMum's slow-cooker but I'd settle for Anna's tights. PeckhamRose - no. That was just wrong.

I've Just Witnessed A Miracle! Goldie....
giggirl replied to Tony.London Suburbs's topic in The Lounge
All hail the coming of TLS for he isn't just a very naughty boy, he is the Messiah, and an East Dulwich miracle has been performed. We can apply to Rome to have the miracle recognised and a sainthood bestowed on TLS. I had an audience with His Holiness in Rome two years ago (I kid you not) so obviously I've already got a foot in the door and could put a word in. I feel honoured just to share your post code TLS. -

I love my husband, but why does he watch such sh*te television?
giggirl replied to dulwichmum's topic in The Lounge
Dulwichmum, What sort of language is this? Did you have too much sherry? It won't do. I couldn't have been more shocked if the Queen had rapped her speech this year. It won't do. It just won't do.
