Thanks all. You handy with a chisel, PGC? Can I bribe you with a bottle or two of red? Have you actually got a chisel? I once incurred the wrath of an ex (who was a chippy at the time) when I used his best chisel to open a pot of paint ..... KK if they are nailed down they must have been filled on top as there is no sign of nails ComputedShorty, good point re the planing. The shelves are all the same width. ! can't see how I could stand it upside down, though full marks for lateral thinking - as it has cupboards at the bottom and shelves on the top, it would look extremely odd! Quite apart from the fact that it would fall over :)) So, OK, looks like one way or another I will buy the dresser. Next question - can anybody recommend a reliable and reasonably priced local man with van? It doesn't come apart - damn.
-
Thanks KK, I had thought about sanding but thought it would take forever. I need to be sure I can get them off before I buy the dresser! I'll have to get someone else to do it, I am absolute crap at DIY, as is Flappers.

You're such a helpful and knowledgeable lot I'm sure somebody can help me with this. I want to buy a dresser but it has a plate lip on every shelf which I would need to remove in order to be able to put the things onto the shelves which I want to, otherwise they won't fit. The lips aren't nailed on so I assume they must be glued onto the shelf - very firmly indeed. What would be the easiest way to get them off? In fact is it possible (surely it must be!)? I'm afraid if I attack them with a hammer I might demolish the whole dresser :))

I may be interested in a Campervan share scheme, bit like a time share!! Would love to have one but cannot possibly justify the expense - or indeed afford the expense :))

El Pibe Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > why would you rip vinyl?!?!? xxxxxxx Because I've got a load of stuff on vinyl that I haven't got in CD or digital form, and I've got no particular attachment to the records or their sleeves as physical objects. I like the jumps, scratches etc because that's how I'm used to hearing the tracks in many cases. I wouldn't bother ripping classical music albums though, I'd replace those probably. A few of the sleeves I might keep to display for nostalgia's sake, maybe. But at present it's all taking up space which could be better used. And I never play any of it, but I probably would once it's ripped.

Or at least, what people were asking, which doesn't mean they're succeeding in selling them at that. It can really vary even between different versions of what is apparently the same CD. Admittedly many of mine are a bit obscure, being hardcore traditional folk :)) But even some CDs given free with music mags etc seems to be on sale for a lot more than I would have thought. Oh God, now I've got to start on my vinyl, that'll probably take another five years at the rate I've been going .... I did start doing it about - er - five years ago, mucking about with Audacity was starting to do my head in ....

El Pibe Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Thinking about it I still haven't ruled out the > DAC as to why some stuff sounds worse than the CD > on lossless. xxxxxx Extremely stupid question I know, but presumably you're listening to them through the same system? Because that theoretically shouldn't be the case if it's really lossless conversion, should it? Weird. Not that I'm a techie at all so I don't even know why I'm commenting .....

Wow! Brilliant snowmen! Respect to all those whose hands can stand the cold long enough to build them :)) -

camberwell70 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I didn't say the houses in South Norwood were > 'non-identikit.' xxxxxx No - you said the houses in East Dulwich were identikit, with the clear implication that the houses in South Norwood weren't. Or have I misunderstood you? Are the streets of terraced houses in South Norwood somehow different to the streets of terraced houses in East Dulwich? And all over South East London for that matter!

I use FLAC because it's smaller than WAV but still lossless. However I don't use iTunes at all for anything. But anything I want to play on my car stereo I also have to rip as MP3 (or convert it later if I could be bothered) as it won't play FLAC files. Re backing up, I'm also somewhat paranoid about the possibility of two hard drives failing, even though it's unlikely, so belt and braces I use Carbonite as well. I'm not sure Carbonite is the best option actually, but I found it quite confusing comparing them all, so in the end I stuck with it.

I've just done it. Not keeping the CDs, but am backing up the whole of the digital collection to an external hard drive. I got this: http://www.cocktailaudio.com/home.html Very pleased with it so far and it gets loads of useful firmware updates which are automatic as long it's connected to the internet (which mine permanently is via a WiFi dongle). I'm not particularly attached to any physical items, though I am keeping a few of the CDs which have got a lot of info in the bookets.
