PeckhamRose replied to Tanza's topic in The Lounge
What a great posting. I am forwarding your posting to my mate! What a great friend you are. -
feminist orthodoxy in the government
PeckhamRose replied to niledynodely's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The 'problem' of motherhood. Hmm! I also need a definition of the word 'work'. One of my jobs I would do for free and often do. But when it pays it's suddenly more respectable and means more. Sometimes I work for years on a project and it may never see the light of day or someone may come along and pay me for it. It's still work but it's also my life! Everything is so compartmentalised in society, even the meanings of words. Sometimes I know I do not belong in these worlds where people put me in to compartments or types, and make expectations on what I should do and be and feel and think. If it weren't for the need to earn money to pay for my life I'd be happy not working and just travelling for ever and ever. My mate thinks that too and we are different genders! -
Incident on Peckham Rye/Nunhead (hit while cycling)
PeckhamRose replied to paddykelly's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Pearson that's ridiculous, sorry but it is. If everyone reported all such crimes and incidents like this then the police would know to target resources. Come along to the local Police Ward panel and tell them your views, but please report it. You can even report it online. -
I had a letter from 'her' today about the Save the South london line. So that's what she did yesterday, wrote to me.
-
Yeah right. She is into images not words! Bet you 'was' there all day. ;)

I also have met Anna Span and am delighted she is wanting to become a politician. We need politicians to come from a very broad range of professions and lives and backgrounds and she is a very intelligent woman. Is pornography so funny? The subject can be but the word has been highjacked and many people can't see beyond the word. Women friendly porn is most brilliantly described by *Bob*! Female friendly porn is by its nature sexist because while you don't need to let us through the door in front of you, we do nevertheless want to come first or at the same time before you fall asleep. It all boils down to what those crazy folk who believe all that nonsense written by men in the bible. Those crazy religious folk see it as a sin and something to equate with 'power'. And they had the money and the education to order us all about. The rest of us didn't stand a chance! The more that women write and produce 'porn' and show it as positive and non threatening, the less the problem will be.* Hoorah for Anna Span. And I LOVED the film Secretary which showed the submissive woman having the power. AND it was funny! * appalling sentence structure!

He is such an accent chameleon. When someone with a working class accent rings in he acts all chummy and makes out he understands everything the person is on about and so on, but when someone from a different class comes on sure enough he ups his class-ness a couple of notches. He just doesn't seem to be genuine; there's nothing real about him, as if he doesn't have his own personality. He's also very anal retentive like a lot of right on liberals. He asked me on air once what my favourite shop was. At the time it was the Sh! Women's store in Coronet Street N1, so I said so, and you could see the beads of sweaty embarrassment come out the radio and he just couldn't cope with it. How we laughed.

speeding in ryedale (is anyone also concerned)
PeckhamRose replied to green army's topic in The Lounge
Exactly, you councillors and other politicians are turning everything / seeing everything as a crime. It is not a crime for a driver/ biker to drive sensibly over a particular speed limit when one is able to drive sensibly, see the road in advance and plan ahead as recommended by the Institute of Advanced Motoring. But no, politicians say 'let's make it a 20mph zone' so now we're crims. -

I am glad you told the police. The local safer neighbourhood watch team are quite active around that area at the moment. -

PeckhamRose replied to lpool's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
There's an item in another forum called TheLondonBikers where it has been discovered that these cars are themselves not required to obey the rules they fine others for. So if they're parked on a double yellow line taking a photo of a car parked on a double yellow line in order to send them a fine, that's allowed; they weren't breaking the law themselves by parking on the double yellow line. Ridiculous eh? -
I'm thinking Ruth Jones as Ness in Gavin & Stacey. Fishnets, boots, Dominatrix black wig and heavy black make-up. Lush!

His very name - the sight or thought of it - makes my flesh crawl. Please no-one add anymore so this thread can float gently out of site.

PeckhamRose replied to green army's topic in The Lounge
I'd like to shout the loudest about not putting speed humps on yet more roads. The bigger cars just slam over them and this can cause damage to houses' foundations. Closing off Ryedale, yeah, let's close off yet another road. More traffic will need then go into Dunstans, itself already over -loaded and in an appalling condition (and very narrow at that junction next to the DIY store) as it is. I use Ryedale coming home often, so I can turn left out of it into Forest Hill Road and park along the road to go to Co-op or Post office. Still, instead I could continue down and turn right into Dunstans, wait my turn to join that traffic at the traffic lights, turn right, then wait for oncoming traffic to let me squeeze in across it to park and go to the shops. Could do that for you if it would make you 'appy. Or just go down RyeDale and left to the shops. It's their satnavs I tell you! The satnavs are telling them to take that turning! All your roadbumps speedbumps traffic calming and so on won't stop the traffic and closing off the road will irritate a lot of you Ryedalefolk. -

Yeah more road bumps, that would work... Wait for your foundations to be affected as the traffic thunders over them, then think again. -
It was not vandalised so much as Southwark Council could not afford to keep the facility open. Big shame but there we are. The Peckham Society is great and the magazine won an award for the best local information and news magazine in the country. Only about ?4 a year. John Beasley is the editor. Half the membership live out of London and it's their way of keeping in touch and remembering things as they were (not always better, of course!)
-
About 1984 it closed. The blue swimming pool steps are still to be seen. If you really are interested in local history join The Peckham Society and also read John Beasley's books. They cover all these subjects and much, much more and I do not profit from advertising him or his books.

All photos of it illegally parked itself will be greatly appreciated.... I've photo'd a few such instances of such things in Lambeth and Westminster. -
I can see the Heron Tower from my flat and from our perspective it is behind and to the right of the Gherkin which is a shame as I like seeing the gherkin standing out on its own. Anyway, The heron tower is the tallest till the Pinnacle gets going, then the Shard will overtake the lot. The Pinnacle I like too, it's by the Gherkin and Lloyds and replaces an old block which was taken down from the bottom up leaving the steel core in the middle. We were taking friends round last weekend. Took great construction shots!
