His very name - the sight or thought of it - makes my flesh crawl. Please no-one add anymore so this thread can float gently out of site.

speeding in ryedale (is anyone also concerned)
PeckhamRose replied to green army's topic in The Lounge
I'd like to shout the loudest about not putting speed humps on yet more roads. The bigger cars just slam over them and this can cause damage to houses' foundations. Closing off Ryedale, yeah, let's close off yet another road. More traffic will need then go into Dunstans, itself already over -loaded and in an appalling condition (and very narrow at that junction next to the DIY store) as it is. I use Ryedale coming home often, so I can turn left out of it into Forest Hill Road and park along the road to go to Co-op or Post office. Still, instead I could continue down and turn right into Dunstans, wait my turn to join that traffic at the traffic lights, turn right, then wait for oncoming traffic to let me squeeze in across it to park and go to the shops. Could do that for you if it would make you 'appy. Or just go down RyeDale and left to the shops. It's their satnavs I tell you! The satnavs are telling them to take that turning! All your roadbumps speedbumps traffic calming and so on won't stop the traffic and closing off the road will irritate a lot of you Ryedalefolk. -

Yeah more road bumps, that would work... Wait for your foundations to be affected as the traffic thunders over them, then think again. -
It was not vandalised so much as Southwark Council could not afford to keep the facility open. Big shame but there we are. The Peckham Society is great and the magazine won an award for the best local information and news magazine in the country. Only about ?4 a year. John Beasley is the editor. Half the membership live out of London and it's their way of keeping in touch and remembering things as they were (not always better, of course!)
-
About 1984 it closed. The blue swimming pool steps are still to be seen. If you really are interested in local history join The Peckham Society and also read John Beasley's books. They cover all these subjects and much, much more and I do not profit from advertising him or his books.

Look out for new (traffic) camera car (in East Dulwich)
PeckhamRose replied to lpool's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
All photos of it illegally parked itself will be greatly appreciated.... I've photo'd a few such instances of such things in Lambeth and Westminster. -
I can see the Heron Tower from my flat and from our perspective it is behind and to the right of the Gherkin which is a shame as I like seeing the gherkin standing out on its own. Anyway, The heron tower is the tallest till the Pinnacle gets going, then the Shard will overtake the lot. The Pinnacle I like too, it's by the Gherkin and Lloyds and replaces an old block which was taken down from the bottom up leaving the steel core in the middle. We were taking friends round last weekend. Took great construction shots!

incident on east dulwich road (abuse from kids)
PeckhamRose replied to rgutsell's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
To be fair, it only has ED safer neighbourhood team info but quite a bit of East Dulwich is actually in the Peckham Rye safer neighbour team area as shown on the maps which are in my links above. And therefore they have different email addys and phone numbers. Mark/Admin, please could both safer neighbourhood teams' details go in the information? (Even if no-one knows to find it!) -

OK I'm blushing. Never noticed it. Sorry. So why do people keep asking and PMing me? Because they didn't notice it either. Hmm -

Thanks - I asked about this ages ago. Things like this, and local hospital numbers and useful stuff for the community. Seems there wasn't enough interest and/or the admin wasn't keen. I'd have thought it really important! -

incident on east dulwich road (abuse from kids)
PeckhamRose replied to rgutsell's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
"when a young man stepped out in front of me and appeared to be commanding me to stop. (Which I was forced to do, with all the rush hour traffic behind as well) Then a group of around 8-10( I guess), all of school age, stepped out on the road, and it was clear that they were dominating the road and crossing wherever they wanted, however they wanted" If he had not have stopped or could not have stopped he would have been at fault. The man stepping out had no regard for anyone's safety and is at fault. -
Dean - I am so sorry about what has happened but every time the Piolice Ward Panel meet - which anyone is invited to come along to - they beg us to beg people to report what happens to them whether they think they can't identify the perpertarors or not. If more people reported everything that happened like this then the police could collect the info and rightly demand more resources. Every panel we attend we are invited to suggest three areas for them to take particular action and concentrate on - and then at the next meeting we find that they have often sorted the problem. You must - please - report this crime.

EDMummy I think your post was unhelpful and also it did come across like you were blaming him for daring to confront. If they'd have done it to me I would have just video'd them on my phone to - those that's difficult on a motorcycle. I would have probably followed them and phoned the SNT which number is on my mobile. What a terrible thing to have happened to you. I shall try to remember to raise this and also the Cheltenham Road situation also mentioned above, at the next Police Ward Panel to which everyone is welcome to attend but hardly ever anyone does! PM sent to rgutsell -
Whitstable has crap beach though. No sand. Thanet is fab for sand.

As I said in a diff thread, there was a heap of bark chippings unloaded in the park the other day and they are being spread around the park. There has been rain in the night so this would have set off the smell. Maybe. -
Hit the A2 then M2 then A2 then A299 and in 80 mins get to the little roundabout at Birchington, turn left, then a bout a mile down take a right and find thecoast then with the sea on your left, just follow it round all the way to Ramsgate and pick a bay, (in not the right order) you'll find Minnis Bay Westgate, Broadstairs, Viking Bay, Louisa Bay, Joss Bay, (great Captain Digby Pub restaurant on the cliff above), Palm Bay, Walpole Bay Cliftonville (Newgate Gap) and there are the beautiful beaches aplenty. And they constantly win the Blue Flag clean beaches award, probably mainly because no-one goes there anymore since everyone started going to Spain for their summer hols! Just get to the far end of the A299 where it hits .
-
A large supply of bark chippings was delivered to Peckham RyePark and distributed by men with shovels and wheelbarrows around the park. No idea if that has anything to do with the price of fish.

Evening Standard - Spotlight on Dulwich
PeckhamRose replied to damzel's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Have you a link to the article? I can't find it for some reason probably due to my uselessness today! -
Didn't wanna be greedy, like. Meanwhile, I remember the wonderful Simply Sausages shops. There was one in Victoria, one in Berwick Street and other places. They made great sausages and at 4pm on a Saturday they'd sell for half price. But then the supermarkets cottoned on (I must find out where 'cottoned on' came from) and brought out their specialist sausages so Simply Sausages sort of closed down, I think.

I have but I could only cram in about 8 inches.

speeding in ryedale (is anyone also concerned)
PeckhamRose replied to green army's topic in The Lounge
Bring up the topic at your local Community Council and/or Police Ward Panel. I agree with someone above that such problems are in many streets all over the world! I use that road to cut the corner when heading up to the top of Lordship Lane, and when coming back I use it so I can park outside the Co-op and nip in to get milk. At a local Police Ward Panel someone came along and raised this about a year ago saying they were sick of big lorries and others going down it. I suggested their satnavs may be telling them to use the road so they are not to know.
