Evening Standard - Spotlight on Dulwich
PeckhamRose replied to damzel's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Maybe they were on quieter areas or closer to popular schools? There could be many reasons! -
I filled it in. I made a comment about how I sometimes feel that some people come across as having a heightened sense of importance or that they feel this forum does, but that anyway it is incredibly wonderful and useful.

And do it by motorcycle.... Anecdote time: Bestest memory was being stopped by CHiP (Californian Highway Patrol) for doing a little over the 50mph. I saw the lights in the rear view mirror and pulled over and he got out his car and I got off my bike. He watched. I pulled off my helmet - I'm female. I also happened to have some makeup on but not tacky-like. I then opened my mouth and out came my best female version of High Grant accent. "I am so sorry Officer, I realise I may have been going over the speed limit". Covering his amusement and shock, a little, he asked me for my documents. My documents were at the bottom of the rather large bag tied with a hundred bungee cords to the back seat. I explained this was the case and as I started undoing everything, I told him I had a British passport and British driving licence (they have drivers' licenses, we have driving licenses), and realising this would take some time and that there were rather a lot of speeding car drivers he could be chasing - he said "You take care ma'am and enjoy the rest of your vacation but stay within our limits, yeah?" "Thank you so much Officer, I shall". All the way back to LA I could not wipe the grin off my face. Another place to stop north of San Francisco is GUERNEVILLE. It's a male gay town basically, and as friendly as you could imagine. I went with MrPR and stayed in a fab riverside guest house run by a great couple of guys and absolutely everywhere we went, from the supermarkets and even the gay bars in the evening, we were welcomed warmly. But I think I was the only woman in the town!

Fed up with potholes? Get your creative hat on!

Ohhh is this a political thread? -
The reason going south to LA from SF is best because they drive on the right so you're closer to the coast. I would drive to the Canyon, but then I'm a motorcyclist so it's all good! I would definitely recommend the north of San Francisco though. One of my rellies lives in the Sierra foothills. It's not famous up there but so pretty. What a well travelled lot we are here!

3rd floor flat, balcony front and back. Flower troughs and hanging helmets / baskets front and back. Recent scaffolding gave us the opportunity to go out and put 8 bird boxes around our windows and our neighbours' windows. And this week the blue tits are checking out their property options, checking for best light options, best positions, comparing notes in the trees. The one closest to our back balcony - they have decided - is not an option. SpaceyCat sits on the window cill licking her lips. Meanwhile, the squirrels have finally met their match. They would climb up the drainpipes and ruin all my planting. But the crocuses have survived popping their head amongst the red winter berries. Having tried everything to put them off, we have finally discovered motorcycle chain grease sprayed around the drain pipes is preventing them from their aims. I love reading this thread!

I've sent a PM of a link for you. I have been to California many times as I have rellies there, and also done road trips around USA including Las Vagas and the Pacific Coast Highway and so on. If you can, I would highly recommend trying to find a reason to go down the 395 which is a sort of north/south road inland and through the desert. Las Vegas is such fun, if you're not a gambler! On our road trip Las Vegas gave us some of the most comfy places to stay yet were the second cheapest after Alabama! Do try and take a helicopter ride if you can stretch to it, and go over the Hoover Dam. When driving up Pacific Coast Highway visit Big Sur and the Hurst Castle. I quite like Santa Cruz (and Littlehampton, come to that! Great point though, woofmtd!) and Monterey, but when staying in San Francisco try and take a sea plane ride around it, which is based in Sausalito just north of the Golden Gate Bridge. If you can, ride the coast north of San Francisco, go into the Redwood forests and see the Sequoias. Ohh I know you'll have a great time! Send us photos! PeckhamRose

In the antipodes the travel thing is just part of growing up. They either go on a year's travel in between school and uni, or go between uni and work, or both. In this country it is not so common, mainly I suppose because we have less money for our kids but also because we don't have that go-for-it attitude those fab Aussies and Kiwis have. It is an educational thing. Travel is a great educator. What on earth is wrong with that.

Love it. Can see the beginnings of it from my flat already I think! (It may be something else!)

Any news about the girls who were stabbed (by each other?)
-
It's a bit like the apparent 'fact' that 10% of drivers of cars on the roads in London have no licence or MOT or some such. How can you tell unless they are in an accident or you spot check (and there were LOADS caught on the Vauxhall Bridge Road Sunday that I saw). People will continue to walk their dogs and just hope they don't get caught. I think it is unreasonable and another example of how a few people abuse a system and we all have to pay. Elderly folks living on their pensions and little else can't afford - and nor is it necessary to - chip their dog and have a licence for it.

Have you been thrown out of Lee Hurst's comedy club?
PeckhamRose replied to *Bob*'s topic in The Lounge
pines for the magical days of the Tunnel Club Greenwich. You really had to be sharp. The audience were the stars. Well apart from those on the stage. Bring back the Swede. -
I do so hope the parents and friends of the girls who were involved in this stabbing ain't looking at this thread right now. I hope they're ok.

To see MrPR do once more what he loves doing more than anything else: gliding and teaching people to glide. He is thus a qualified gliding instructor and thus needs to have a good regular income to be able to afford to go do this amazing thing. But his job situation was such he had to stop his hobby for financial reasons. If he gets another job (photography based would be best which he has done professionally for years) and can afford to glide and teach gliding again, I will be happy happy happy.

Go on a year long road trip around the world. Wouldn't be enough time but I don't want to be greedy.

Brilliant idea, and also good thought from Huggers. Peckham Society would have something to say about that. I went on a Peckham Society tour and they discussed that though I think at the time that room was structurally unfit or something. A theatre, and used for theatre. As well as comedy obviously.
-
Sorry mate but you did offend me and so that post has been taken off. You have not responded in kind to my private message as requested. Meanwhile, I hope those two girls who attacked each other grow and learn from this awful experience.

If BBC 6 music goes will they fill in the number gap by making 7 into 6?! I often listen to BBC6 in the afternoons but now will just stick with good ol Planet Rock!

I apologise if you thought I was being serious, and I am sorry you do not like the area. Many of us do, and have no problem with it. It is terribly sad when violence breaks out but it is not a common occurrence and when it happens it is also a product of poverty / poor education / ignorance. So it's a class issue. And read any history book of London and mostly you'll see any similar situations in poorer areas. But I have lived here 26 years and walk down Rye Lane regularly. Again, I was kidding when I joked I would thump you. I don't know you but felt your post rather provocative and antagonistic. Best wishes, Peckham Rose x
-
Phew! Tough one PGC! I thought he / she was referring to me!
-
I certainly think anyone who has political power ie a councillor or MP or someone who is in their post thanks to a political party should be made to say so (in their signature?). I have enjoyed reading the posts above and learned from them.
-
Soo you think do you that most people get mugged and/or attacked on Rye Lane and that those of us who haven't been are therefore lucky? I think living within 2 miles of it you ought to leave. You're far too close for comfort. Christ if I knew you I'd thump you with an attitude like that! Damn, forgot to add the smiley icon thingy. Too late, they have taken it seriously. Oh well.
-
I must be a loose screw then. I often walk the length of Rye Lane to get to 36 bus stop or library or opticians or somewhere the other end. Walked it at night, too. Alone. Me, female. I may not choose to shop in Little Africa (as it is sometimes called, just as Southall is Little India which is fine), but I've seen fights in Kings Road Chelsea, too. I do hope you feel better about things soon and am glad to see you are comforted by the good 'uns!

Nothing wrong wth Harley Davidsons. yes there is. They're not always reliable and actually not comfy for long journeys. DO SOME (MORE) Travelling!

Just because it makes someone suspicious does not mean they HAVE to post on here with their suspicions. They could have just kept quiet rather than writing shite and causing more distress to the opening poster. silverfox you ar$e. Hope you're proud.
