Sue Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Not sure what point you are making, Fox? > > Laptops sometimes go wrong however well they are > looked after, as does anything with components > which may fail. Was not trying to make a point. Just saying that if you look after your laptop it should last for years. Components usually fail soon after purchase. That is why Extended guarantees are offered. Retailers know that if a device does not fail in the first year. (Under Warranty) it is unlikly to fail in the next 2-3 years. People are often not aware of some things that reduce the life of their machines. They may well be aware that pouring your coffee over the keyboard is not a good idea. But not aware that Smoking near your PC can Damage your Hard Drive. Smoke particles are Larger than th gap between the Disk and the Read/Write Heads. Same goes for Dust from 'Exhaust' from back end of vaccuum cleaners. House hold Dust. Mice.. stuck in motherboard fan. Insects. The term 'Bug' derives from one of the first computers ever built. An insect (Moth) got stuck in a relay and the computer crashed. http://www.jamesshuggins.com/i/tek1/grace_hopper_h96566k_full.jpg http://www.jamesshuggins.com/h/tek1/first_computer_bug_large.htm Foxy

My Toshiba is 8+ years young and still going well. (Quickly locates wood to touch) They are built like battle ships and very heavy. It is not my main laptop but keep it all up to date as it runs XP and it is good for reference when repairing other PCs /Laptops Had my Sony VA10 for a few years now... Not had any real problems. Resisting all temptation to Update Windows 8. It is a pile of crap. ?50.00 to upgrade from Windows 7 (another pile of crap) Windows 8 is just a Front End to Windows 7. to make it look pretty. It is not an Operating System a such. Laptops should last for years if you look after them. Fox.

This is the first procedure to try... Unplug the power, remove the battery and then hold the power button for 30 to 60 seconds. Re-insert battery.. Then reattach the power and attempt a boot. But presumably if someone is taking a look hopefully all will be ok.. fox

'Wrong Type of Snow' IS forecast for Friday. It is the 'Powder Snow' that supposidly gets into the 'Points' of Railwail Tracks that compacts and freezes. Dispite Points being heated. Fox. Foxy

Problem is, it is always the 'Wrong Type of Snow' a term used my Transport governing bodies and Local Authorities. 'Wrong Type of Snow' means you cannot grit before it comes down and it is too late to grit after it has come down. 'Wrong Type of Snow' only requires a 'Single Flake' for all Train Services to come to a grinding halt. Fox

A pet owner has been warned he could be fined ?1,000 after he put up missing cat posters in his local neighbourhood. http://news.uk.msn.com/uk/articles.aspx?cp-documentid=155753928 Not sure of the policy in Southwark. But certainly people have been fined. Fox. -

I was in The Ship in The Borough recently. They had a 'Photographer' ? photographing plates of food. It was a pretty amateur set up without the usual Lighting and 'Cosmetic' tricks usually associated with trying to make a plate of 'crap' look edible. The food there is generally pretty poor. So perhaps Youngs are attempting to up the standards in ALL their outlets. Beer IS good though. NOT good if you prefer to drink 'Arty Farty Fruit Bitters' at ?8.00 a pint. Like 'Ramsey's Old'e Stoat & Pinapple Head Banger 9%' I made that up. So Formites need not complain if you cannot find it in ED. Fox.

Arhhh The Round House .. I went there many many times... On one occassion whilt in an 'Elevated' state of mind I arrived to find there was a Power Cut. I was refused entry on saftey grounds but was allowed in after producing a Torch. ( Could not make it up) The power was restored. Greasy Truckers were "a loose organisation of individuals whose ideals were based on those of the Diggers in San Francisco, recycling money into worthwhile causes." [3] This album was the first of two albums recorded at concerts in London organised by Greasy Truckers, the second being Greasy Truckers Live at Dingwalls Dance Hall (1974). All proceeds from the concert and LP sales went to Greasy Truckers' project to build a hostel in Notting Hill Gate.[4] The concert was due to run from 3PM until midnight and include performances by Byzantium and others, but wage disputes between the unions and the government had led to frequent power cuts, one of which occurred in the early evening, giving an unusual album track "Power cut". The fire brigade asked the audience to leave, but when power was resumed, and the audience re-admitted, hundreds more people came in. In defiance of the Fire Brigade, many people stayed inside, temporary lighting was set up and the audience was entertained by eccentric folk band Skinner's Rats who did not require amplification. They started with the opening of Richard Strauss's "Also Sprach Zarathustra" before breaking into a medley of reels and being joined on stage by a troop of Morris dancers - the Blackheath Foot and Death Men. Strange that whilst Googling the above. I discovered the bit about the Blackheath Foot and Death Men. They become Blackheath Morris Men. and I danced with them back in the 80's Do not remember them being at the Round House. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greasy_Truckers_Party Fox

Allotments do not generate revenue... They also generally get neglected. People get them and the novelty soon wears off when people find they are hard work. Bit like people joining a Gym... Fox. -
