My understanding is that Paddick, if he wins, will be more consultative and open himself up to scrutiny. Ken is effectivly an elected dictator. This is a system designed by the Labour Party when they thought poor old Frank Dobson was going to be Mayor and they ended up with Ken who left the Labour Party to stand, so guess what?? they changed the rules and let him back in so there was a Labour mayor of London. I'm convinced that Boris has a deal going with Labour so they retain it. Surely no one will vote for him?

The choice for me is between an idiot (ken) a fool (boris) and someone who's actually done something very positive indeed for London in his previous professional career. As Ken was the anti establishment candidate in his first outing Brian Paddick clearly fulfills that role now. I would have thought that almost everyone on the forum would choose to vote for him for this reason alone, bolshy lot you are, he has very strong green credentials too and more chance of winning than the green candidate. Go on, stick your fingers up to the Labourtory party for once.

Why do you think there are so many Estate Agents and restaurants? Why do people go to Brick Lne (or LL for that matter) for a curry. Pigeons and car parks.

The point I was making is that nobody should be castigated for sending their children either privately or to state schools or a combination of both. I think its fine to whinge about school fees if you don't think you are getting value for money, but some people do feel they are very good value for money, for whatever reason. I think that many (but not all) private schools 'Charitable' status is indefensible and it should be abolished. Either way there is an excellent choice of schools in Dulwich and education must be one, if not the largest, 'industry' in Dulwich these days. Totally agree with Jennys, get on the PTA or become a Governor, it's very rewarding.

Jenny and Allfornun have good points but it's a very personal thing about how and where you want your kids educated and one size does not fit all. Having said that there are excellent state schools all over Dulwich partic. at infant & junior levels. I do think it gets a bit tougher at secondary transfer time

Well if they stay short termist it will, eventually, be to their detriment. The Dulwich Estate has IMO had a policy of 'preferring' corporate tenants, probably because they are more likely to pay the rent and will probably pay higher rents. The result is that it's very difficult to actually shop in the Village and there are no independent restaurants. It would be a tradgedy if the Lane went the same way. There are a few shops that own their own freeholds but high premiums to secure premises and high rents could quickly make the alternative much more attractive. I've only heard rumours of what GBK and others are paying and have had to pay in terms of premium for a lease but the figures sound astronomical by any reasonable standards. If the butcher wanted to sell for instance there'd be a bigger queue than Saturday morning.

A landlord could of course make capital improvements to a property and work out a new rent to amortise the cost. More enlightened landlords will fund these sorts of structural improvements to improve the property and keep a good tenant going.
