  1. A cab home to ED from the West End at night last time I took one (about 8 years ago) was about ?20. Now I expect its a lot more. OK - so I can't afford a cab - so should I give up seeing friends, or doing anything at all? And if most women start staying home when its dark, then the streets are going to be even LESS safe for those who HAVE to be there - as I said what about shift workers? What happened to this woman is awful, dreadful but we simply cannnot start leading our lives as if there is a threat around every corner - because then we start to lead existences instead.

Gosh Mike you are so right - mmmm I'd better give up having a social life, working shifts, going to buy a pint of milk or doing anything that might mean I am walking alone at night. Perhaps we'd better start asking our big brave men folk to do these things for us, or ask to be accompanied at all times. My partner will love to come and pick me up from the station or bus stop............. I thought statistics show that young men between 18 and 25 are more likely to be attacked than any other demographic?
  3. Goodness - how awful for her. I hope she makes a complete recovery.
  4. I used egg white - made the spikes really nice and spikey!
  5. Does pose the question of what is the point of having the cameras at all if they are not used when a crime is commited.
  6. (not like when I was young, we were all miserable). Talk for yourself - I had a fantastic childhood - most of the summer either on the beach or in the woods building dens (wouldn't be considered safe now)............ I had free meals at school and we were too poor to go abroad on holiday and I had totally bonkers parents - but I was very happy indeed!
  7. I would certainly consider it - maybe a house swap with someone...............
  8. Well it takes our mind of the recession at least.......... or is that the point?
  9. Barry This is great - the only negative thing is that it has taken one individual to make these changes. Anyway great work and I would like to add that the man at ED is really nice and friendly and does seem under enormous pressure at times. I too have found the office closed but then found him having to do other jobs around the station. He also obviously has to make certain breaks during the day - it is annoying when this happens when you want a ticket, but on the whole I think he is doing a good job.
  10. I just don't understand the comment in the OP - that the Horniman is so sparse and boring - or have I taken that out of context? The Horniman is a fantastic commodity that we have practically on our doorstep. Perhaps if the OP is so concerned she should contact the place directly or even the Friends to find out the veracity of the rumour.
  11. Agree re the constant stacking of shelves. Also have mentioned to several members of staff on different occasions that the freezer with vegetarian food is badly looked after. Because the door doesn't close properly there is a constant layer of frost on the products and many items look like they've semi-thawed and then been re-frozen. Each time I mention it I get acknowledged and then the next time I visit nothing has improved.
  12. Sophiesofa - so agree with you - but I always take my book with me which (a) saves me from small talk and (b) means I don't have to read any womens' magazines. Also wish the mirror could be covered up until the job is finished, I don't like spending time looking at myself in an unflattering mirror!

    Tit Monday

OK guys - if you all hate them - who are all those ED-ites that are wearing them?
  15. Crime happens anywhere - perhaps this forum makes us more aware of it - certainly if I didn't read it I wouldn't have known about these muggings. As for staying in after dark - surely that would just release the streets for the criminals. What we need is more people out and about, and as the second mugging happened at 11.00AM it seems a tad irrelevant. I hope all the victims are recovering from their ordeals.
  16. Susan who?
  17. God - if I had managed to complete my PhD I would want the whole world to know about it - sorry ;-)
  18. I bought some excellent bread from Blackbird Bakery but have to say that their almond croissants were amongst the most unpleasant food experiences of my life - such a shame as they looked delicious.
  19. I agree with Sue - there is nothing nicer than sitting in a sunny beer garden with a pint or a large glass of wine - no food required or needed. I think SteveT is thinking of quite a narrow band of peoople (ie not older or poorer people who can't AFFORD to go out to eat - not students or young people who hate to let food get in the way of a good drink up - and not people who just want a DRINK in a pub)

It will be premature balding and excessive wearing of 3/4 length trousers and bad t-shirts from what I remember from the 2 or 3 days we had of summer last year.
  21. I would love to say I know the feeling, but unfortunately I don't - still the meaning of your post was admirably clear!
  22. Oh Dulwich Mum - its a bit of a no no to spell cheques as checks......... is your spellcheque! broken.
  23. Aw Big Phil - such awesome power you wield........... I wish I could bar people from train carriages, bus queues etc etc.
