  1. If they had been actively hunting him maybe I'm not trying to exhonerate him here, not in the slightest. I just thought it might be worth adding the victim's comments to the debate. They seem pertinent to the whole thing. If you were her, what would YOU want to happen next? That said, I genuinely I don't understand the sudden interest in his capture It's not as if he has been found after all these years so this is something that can be "righted" - he has been in public the whole time and there hasn't been an appetite to pursue him to any great extent. The documentary made 7 years ago which examined the case didn't lead to mass calls for his incarceration and the comments made by the victim at the time have been repeated by her in subsequent years.
  2. Call me a square from the past, but before everyone brings up their own take, shouldn't the views of the woman in question be taken into account? She is still in no doubt that what he did to her was wrong but she said it paled into insignificance compared to what the media subsequently did to her. Her views on Polanski are that he "made a terrible mistake but he paid for it" so, given that he releases films every few years where there is ample opportunity to condemn him, what is all of this about now? She doesn't want it, he doesn't want it and given the various shenanigans in lawyers offices at the time, the legal system doesn't seem to benefit from it
  3. Partly because there is a tolerant/relaxed view about spliffs in British society in general I would imagine. Plus you or I, could grow some at home if we wanted. It doesn't need the vast army of trafficking that cocaine does. But I'm not offended by BBW's posting about taking it - I just don't think it is the same as saying you have a spliff.
  4. See if a Thread is called Friday NIght dad's club, I'm just not going to read it until it's too late Charlie is shite, as keef says, but not just because it's so badly cut AND makes you obnoxious, but because unlike alcohol, it's manufacture is predicated entirely on the exploitation of others and anyone who won't take responsibility for where their sheeeeet comes from is an idiot On top of THAT, I'm sure BBW was allowed to run rampant again by Admin, on certain provisos. If I were he, I would play a more cautious game If I were Dulwichmum, I would refrain from engaging with BBW directly given their past And yes I know this post makes me sound like a school prefect all over again - so be it
  5. The first 2 lines are all you need to read, really Nutter
  6. You are starting from the premise, silverfox, that society has, on the whole, become worse Thomas Hobbes wrote in the 16th century that man's life was ""solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short" We have come a long way since then Arguing with the wrong people will see you in big trouble, no debate there. But that has always been the case. Are things worse now than 100 years ago? In almost every way they are better. Are they worse than they were 50 years ago? Possibly, anecdotally in some parts of the country. Is the solution physical punishment? (or as keef has pointed out "torture" ) I think you'll find many of this miscreants are well used to being on the end of pysical punishment, from a young age Blaming liberalism may fit in with your world-view but it doesn't help with your prognosis. Whenever the subject is raised I repeat.:There are parts of the world, and you don't have to go as axtreme as Singapore, with far les violence, higher levels of happiness and enlightenment. They are also broadly liberal. But they don't follow the "dog eat dog" capitalism as slavishly as the US & UK. But the general populace in this country, including yourself would abhor any drift towards such a scandanavian model, given who little interest most English show in the European project
  7. A thread about slapping people in the face and now this. I'm no psychiatrist, but....
  8. you JUST beat me to it georgia!
  9. Although I now read "A wholly unnecessary American remake is in pre-production." pants
  10. I finally got round to watching this last night - fantastic stuff. One thing I wasn't expecting was the amazing sense of place. Suburban/small-town Scandanavia in the 80s looks...... odd
  11. WTF? * shakes head * some people just ask for it
  12. Well, that and being wrong. I'm not too keen on his links with them terrrrrists in Northern Ireland either
  13. That's pretty much my only issue as well - I'm certainly not bothered by any spurious "health" problems I've seen bandied around. But cross-pollination with non-GM crops which then means, even if I go out of my way to avoid GM food, we will all be in hock to Megacorp for the most basic requirement for living. That's more than a worry
  14. Isn't the problem with GM foods the fact that at the moment, any fool can grab some seeds (modified since 4000BC or not) and plant their own crops. But with GM companies such as Monsanto they OWN the rights totally - they can prevent the use of food derived from their products Or have I got that wrong?
  15. agree totally with The Wrestler review from keef there..
  16. In pubs, on tap, yes Imported and bottled, distinctly different. Light and crisp
  17. Resurrected to accomodate the Private Eye clues on another thread
  18. To be fair BBW, I did ask Mockers to resurrect his crossword thread, and not take this one over.
  19. in Hull they might, Jah, but here in London..
  20. It's a bit like the reverse of when someone, maybe your uncle, usually restricts himself to dry and pithy observations, to the extent that you almost think they don't have an opinion, and then *BAM* out of nowhere they start talking all serious-like about a subject. It makes you pay more attention....
  21. stick a couple of clues in your old crossword thread then Piers...
  22. Picked up the new Richard Hawley (fewer old-school strings, still fab) and the latest David Sylvian If anyone thought his Blemish album a tad "out there" then wait until you hear this. I can't decide if it's wildly self-indulgent and rubbish, or wildly-self-indulgent and lovely
  23. I used to for about 5 years back in the late 80s eartly 90s - fell out of the habit. I still like it a lot when I get hold of a copy tho...
  24. At this point, BBW could justifiably ask himself(and Admin) "why is it just me gets picked on?" behave, the lot of ye
  25. Which bit am I contradicting Brendan? I've reread it and not spotted it. I think the legislation is a sop, and just because she has had to enact it doesn't make her less-human and prone to the same as the rest of us. If teh government was enforcing this law with vigour then yeah, she would be in a stickier position BBW - I can assue you that I have never had any domestic staff, Any empathy with the Barnoness is entirely due to a distaste for mobs, coupled with a "sacking for everything" culture which seems to be afoot
