Is the comedy night in EDT any good?
SeanMacGabhann replied to Crepe Suzette's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
isn't Crepe Suzette the name of the Patsy Kensit character in Absolute Beginners? Great book, less good film aaanyway - cheers for the heads up Tillie - although by now Mike P, mark and a couple of others are regulars at the comedy night so their opinion equally valid Sort answer to the question: Yes, absolutely! Longer answer: Joe Rowntree who runs and comperes the club has done a really good job in establishing a second comedy club in the area (more on the other in a mo) As the months have passed, the crowd is a mixture of first-timers and regulars and teh atmosphere has grown accordingly Depending on what comedy clubs you normally go to (Jongleurs?? Please say no!) it's ambience may seem odd... It is one of the most civilised venues I've been to (table service for food and drink) in a lovely room. The acts booked have been very, very good - I've been to most (well, lots) of the clubs listed in Time Out - many no longer with us - and I have a preference for small, shambolic rooms but there are very few places like this. Put it this way, I have pretty much been at every show since I first went last year. I'll be there this Thursday, along with a couple of other forumites and anyone reading is more than welcome to join us if they like. Slight warning: If you are new to comedy generally however the headliner this Thursday is highly rated but not for the faint-hearted. edit: ooh look - speaking of Mike P, he beat me to it! -

The perfect game for Arsenal to shake off dem blues and we blew it. Again. And we were lucky to have our goal stand as well..... That'll be Man U back on top this evening and Chelsea closing ranks. What is with Liverpool @ The Riverside? I know they beat us this season but Liverpool's problem there goes back 5 seasons or something

Russian Winter Festival - Trafalgar Square - 13 January
SeanMacGabhann replied to Michael Palaeologus's topic in The Lounge
the guy organising this thing is a really nice bloke. But he was running late for the interview and the American guy had turned up early for his slot... but not everyone had picked up what was going on, and hey the America guy looked Russian (he really does) so they started to introduce him as the organiser of the Russian festival. His face was a picture Cassius - bad luck. I've been there on more than one occassion. No use to you now, I know but that whole Oxford St to Waterloo section takes so long even on a good day, if I have any zip about me at all I'll walk the couple of hundred yards to Somerset house - it might save time or it might take a bit longer depending, but stress levels are decimated -
Save ED police station petition
SeanMacGabhann replied to mlteenie's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
well, if I did do that, I doubt it would dissuade him from his course of action. He's a councillor and need public vote - saving the police station is easy money as far as collecting signatures and getting a public show of hands I don't mean to cast aspersions on any of the work the councillor or party does generally - just that collecting signatures for a petition today is entirely logical from his point of view If I sound overly negative I should point out that my opinion isn't cast in stone on this issue - but apart from an emotive "but we must have one!" I've not heard any good evidence to support the retention of all of them. But I'm all ears -
Save ED police station petition
SeanMacGabhann replied to mlteenie's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I'm not convinced how useful the station is. I have twice had reason to contact them (once about a mugging and once about id theft) - both times they weren't interested and gave me another number to ring Does the station (as in having one) deter crime? I know most us feel safer with one around but I don't believe it makes that much difference And of course all this is QUITE apart from the reputation ED police have had in the past. The Irish people I knew when I moved here 7 years ago warned of some horrific stories re: Irish prisoners and there was a reputation for corruption generally "The other was detective constable Neil Putnam, who had turned police supergrass against his former colleagues, including Clark, a long-time target of anti-corruption detectives. Putnam named several officers in his Sercs squad based at East Dulwich in south London as being involved in systematic corruption. Over the years they had stolen thousands of pounds, skimmed off drugs they had seized, recycling them through Clark's informant, Fleckney, who had the code-name Jack Higgins." full story here if you search google for "closing police stations effect" you get a raft of Telegraph and Mail stories - which reassures me that the sense of order in the universe is intact Other reports about the effect here and more hilariously, here Crime generally? - worth having a look here (after many stations had already been closed) "Ah but the lefty BBC and the stats office would lie, they are working for the government!" I hear... but then so are the police... Vote for whoever you THINK will replace the stations - they won't -

Why on earth would anyone want to save that monstrosity? You mean the service, not the building? I refer you back to my first statement -
I love positive threads. . loving the suggestions already made so i am going to say. . . looking down lordship lane where the shops start to curve. . Smbs onwards towards goose green. With the colours painted above ground floor level. . odd suggestion maybe. Its not a grand view. . But it says home to me

I spend many a weekend with the first 2 GT's and was salivating over the 3rd... but by then I realised apart from the graphics I wasn't seeing enough evolution. Keeping an open mind for 5 tho anyone play Microprose Golf on the Amiga - That was the golf game for me. Then I went on to PGA, and when I sqw PGA 486 on the PC I thought it would be impossible for them to get any better

next one is 25th in the Dog down in the village tonight isn't a meetup but I know several people will be there to see Keef play a set
