  1. I'm not sure what political correctness has to do with it The only people you have to worry about are you and her - if you asked and she said she was born in Hammersmith, would either you or she feel bad? If I hear an accent I don't recognize I always ask where it's from
  2. tonight - apples - peeled, sliced mixed with cinnamon, nutmeg and some sugar until soft in the meantime - Clonakilty black pudding slices - fried place the dark stuff onto the light stuff mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
  3. You could just carry this around as a recorded message, print it on business cards etc...
  4. Like a first-born Dom, you were doomed to take the flak - and now others have come along, the parents don't have the energy to go through it all again
  5. cheers for the impressions Jah - now you mention the place next to The Garage I remember it. Although it tended to be for gigs next door rather than the Arse I couldn't watch the game but any neutral (and some Gooners) I know said it was pretty good to watch and Spurs were all over us I was pleased for Theo when I heard he got our goal but then when I saw it he didn't know much about it - still, I'll take it!
  6. oooh you so fell into my trap Mr Dale
  7. at least you registered - hello again! and where did runrun come from anyway?
  8. Agreed Jeremy - it would be great, but very surprising That said the Peckham cinema does better than most multiplexes with off-beat stuff - you might have to be flexible with timings, and it's not true every week....but it's not bad either
  9. but woodie - now they have bigger boobs too! Jeremy: The thread was started because of ethics not health - my understanding of the original post anyway. And as for the minging drumsticks - gosh I wish you were my daddy.. and PeckhamRose - don't be frightened by my hatchet- it's only aimed at your argument not you. Do I still get a free ticket after my ideas for your liitle writer's block? ;-) Seriously tho - it is an emotive subject. But everyone seems to want to reduce it to poverty. If poverty is that big an issue for all of us (and it should be) let's address that. But the issue here is the industrialisation of our food supply and the detrimental effect it has had on us as a society - up to and including how we have so many poor people who can't afford decent food (although the attitude of decent food is for well-off ponces doesn't bode well....)
  10. Sorry PeckhamRose - but I'm going to have to take a hatchet out here: our time is arranged differently these days (by who exactly??? is it being done to us or do we choose to do these things) right ons tuff (judgemental) some of you are being a bit patronising(allegation) living situations for the bottom 75% (data source please?) Of COURSE they would eat more healthily and better if they had education, time, money, (YES money). (factually incorrect - plenty of people on this forum, for example who have got the money argue against the need to pay more as well) queue on a Saturday at the organic meat shop on Lordship Lane (been discussed - queing time at Iceland often worse)
  11. ct said: " it's all about personal choice" And there is also talk from people about being vegetarian - as if this precludes them from the argument Remember - many of the vegetables we consume are picked and harvested in harsh conditions where, instead of battery chickens, immigrant workers are housed sveeral to a room, often without basic ammenities The argument isn't just about animal welfare - it's about how those of us who CAN choose to do the right thing, do or don't. If you choose not to then good luck to you but don't say "in an ideal world" or "I would if I could" etc - At the top of the food chain, we have to take responsibility for how others, be it animals or workers, are treated. Ultimately COMPARED TO (and that's an important qualification) much of the world, even those on relatively low incomes (and again I'm talking relatively low - not poverty levels) have it good in this country. And CT is right - we have personal choice. But we also have a responsibility to make genuinely informed decisions and not just brush it off with an "oh look I jnow it's all dreadful and everything but..." People everywhere are very quick to blame the government for this issue or that issue - petrol prices, relationships with dictators etc... as if they were in charge instead of governments things would be different. Well here is an opportunity where as an individual you CAN make a difference and do the right thing. Which doesn't make it easy. But it is do-able....
  12. The thing about Newcastle's search for a new manager is, when you review the names they have discarded over the last 9 years, can they really do any better? If you don't achieve something with the liges of Robsons, Dalglish etc then maybe some of the blame lies with you? That said Allardyce going is at least the right thing. Apart from his negative football, here is someone who won't talk to the BBC but write a column for Zoo magazine.
  13. I think there is merit in both arguments above. I've been in a few times and generally had a good time - and I don't mind the fact that the place isn't easily categorised/stereotyped ;-) I have seen it very busy - and a Wed night in January is no time to judge the commercial success of a place - most places along the Lane are fairly barren at the mo But as discussed elsewhere, many people do need things to fit a normal category before they feel comfortable - and I have seen people look in the window and decide to go elsewhere - simply because they aren't sure what they are getting. Their loss in my opinion (not that I'm saying the place is perfect - but then ,where is?)
  14. As Prefertoremainanon says, we can expect many people to weigh in on this one I've long weighed in against industrially produced meat and am pretty depressed at the level of debate supporting the whole thing. I've checked out some of the TV forums about the Hugh programme and it's pretty depressing to see how much Axminster has changed - ie not a lot apart from holding a grudge against HFW I think there is a mindset which goes "yes I'm well aware of cramped conditions, no daylight etc" without understanding what the reality of that is. Even watching the tv show, you are removed from the noise and the stench. As for money, naturally it's going to be a factor. But it's also an excuse for many. I know plenty of people on min wage and dole money who wouldn't eat industrial meat but for others it's easier to just say "it's all very well for you you can afford it". Those lottery tickets don't pay for themselves. And it's not just financially challenged people with excuses... PLENTY of the well off in the area love a "bargain" as well. To my mind, in MOST cases, it isn't about money - it's just that many people don't genuinely care about the issue As for eating out locally - A couple of places on LL say on the menu that all their meat is from William Rose which should mean at least free-range - Liqourice is one and I've been in there when one of the guys from Rose brought a delivery around. Of course a place that buys good meat doesn't mean they know how to cook it well..but that's a different debate
  15. it doesn't have to be tough meat to benefit from 2 hours plus Chicken maybe less but beef and lamb certainly benefit from long and slow.... just coz it can be done in less time doesn't mean it should be done...
  16. well a cinema was never going to fit in that space now was it?
  17. It's not that I can't be silly but as it's not me in this case I always have a start when I see a sentence like this.. how about "and stop being silly Seanmlow" phew - that's better
  18. shame you didn't make it down EDOldie - next time?
  19. hmmmm - when did you last play it? Time has not been kind I fear
  20. I'm a big Miller's Crossing fan but was never keen on Barton Fink. I keep thinking as I get older that I "get" the Coen's more, so I give it another go - and no, it's still no good Hudsucker is an oddity - was meant to be the big studio push but it was always too oddball for that. Not one of their best but not bad The A list for me is: Blood Simple Rasining Arizone Millers Crossing Fargo Big Lebowski Oh Brother (juuuust about) I can watch Big Lebowski any day, any number of times.
  21. this is what we want - more gig recommendations I'm in
  22. Moo Too looks the weakest to me as well. Say what you will about ED, Mrs Robinson et al - people buy stuff there. I've seen it. But I've never seen it in MT
  23. after some of the confessions on this public forum, I don't think you have anything to worry about Char1ie! Crime Drama? Hmmm - I can imagine that putting some people off, and dissapointing others who are used to CSI et al Chick Flick? Well Bubbs fits the romantic, swarthy hero steretype I'll grant you...
  24. pffft If they were useful categories then why can't a single video store actually agree on what constitutes each one... But it IS a film I want to see (based on the Coen's previous work if nothing else) and I'm now going to read the book as well on the subject of categories - can I have one for "The Wire" please?
  25. embellina Smile/Co-op came to my mind as well, but a mission statement isn't the same as reality. I did applaud them when they told a Christian group to take their money elsewhere when they tried to close down Jerry Spinger: The Opera But if you were a Christian who shared the group's views rather than the co-ops you might have a different view on "ethics" http://www.christianvoice.org.uk/Press/press001.html
