H, the OP is asking for a summer rental. But apart from that, I think you're right. You'd need some serious cash to rent a place in the Cotswolds or Devon for several months every year. As for buying a second property as a holiday home... in a time when we have housing shortages, inflated house prices, and young people unable to buy their first property, it would seem that such luxuries come at a cost to society.

quids - yes of course, but I think the conversation is more about things which have risen at above the inflation rate (or at least seem to have done). Fuel, transportation, and London property all being good examples.

Flight prices seem to have been rising constantly for over 10 years. You could certainly get flights to various US destinations for under ?250 in the 90s. Although prior to that, I think air travel had been getting progressively more affordable - culminating in the earlier days of Easyjet and Ryanair.

billybiro - yeah, actually I do like animals (most of the time). I was just wondering whether birds get special treatment, or if we'd go to the same lengths for all animals. I do not think that Southwark council would rescue baby mice or rats whose nests had been damaged as the result of council work. In fact, I think that if a nest was found in a public space, the council would exterminate them. I'm not saying they shouldn't have rescued the pigeons. I am just wondering why we kill some vermin, and go out of our way to save others.

Nobody has answered my previous point, so I'll ask again. What other types of animal would the council go to these lengths to rescue? Hedgehogs? Squirrels? Mice?

Heinz, I think you're contradicting yourself. You talk about a "clever force", which to me already sounds like some sort of supernatural belief (bordering on creationist, even). I think the world around us - and the wider universe - leaves all semi-intelligent people full of wonder, but it doesn't need to be explained with some sort intelligent creator.

giggirl, I guess you are primarily talking about me. The thread was effectively ruined by the time I came along, thanks to a certain other user's bizarre, attention-seeking boasts. If it had been entirely on-topic, I probably wouldn't have got involved. However, most men find it incomprehensible that anyone could get "exhausted" at the thought of buying a couple of outfits, and my post was intended to reflect this in a light-hearted way. I regret using language which obviously upset Ms B (and I did PM her to try and straighten it out), but I stick by the gist of what I said. Shameful? I am not ashamed at all.

John - it is very common in London to refer to areas by the name of a nearby station. Lighten up, stop being such a boring pedant! The area around DH station is nice (i.e. Grove Lane I guess), but there's not really enough there to consider it a district in its own right.

I know, it kind of irritates me when people complain about not being able to afford to live where they grew up. Just because your parents could afford a house in a certain area, why does that give you an entitlement to own a house there too?

Hong Kong's OK... lots going on, and it has a pretty unique atmosphere and identity. Not a big fan of the gratuitous love of bling which seems to permeate all these places though.
