  1. What would we fill all those cable TV channels with, if there were no Hitler documentaries?
  2. Damon - I heard that McDonald's are the only outlet allowed to sell chips on their own! They made an exception for fish & chips as it's considered a national dish. But at least most people coming from overseas will benefit from the weak pound.
  3. People are talking about rail and tube links instead, but isn't the whole point of a tram is that it's vastly cheaper to build? ?55m sounds like a lot, but it's peanuts compared to the cost of tunneling out a tube extension. I think the tram's a good idea in theory, but it would make the recent narrowing of Walworth road seem rather shorted sighted.
  4. Canada Water and Shoreditch High Street. Yeah, that's a good substitute for London Bridge and Victoria.
  5. You shouldn't let this put you off ED. No big city is absolutely safe, but don't forget that many (maybe the majority) of people on here have never been broken into. And bear in mind that this particular incident was unusual as you had builders in, so security was naturally compromised. Perhaps, if you own the flat, spending some money on extra security precautions could give you some peace of mind?
  6. I would agree with you that the emphasis should be on the taxation laws rather than the individuals (my logic being that most people are fundamentally selfish). I also think that too much emphasis is placed on "the rich", when we all know that many people work predominantly cash-in-hand, some of them earning pretty decent money. But why is it a civic duty to keep tax payments to the minimum? How is twisting the system and exploiting loopholes good for society? Why do you suggest that we should be encouraging this type of thing?
  7. I'm sure several people find the Overground useful. And I'm sure many people are delighted at the potential rise in property prices now that they're on the tube map. But the majority of people want direct services into central London. And yes, it really is inconvenient to get the bus instead. Much slower, much less comfortable, erratic arrival times and journey lengths. It's almost insulting to suggest it as a viable alternative.
  8. I don't get it. Your post was pretty vague, but why is that grounds for barring someone? What have I missed?
  9. So many people are obsessed with the prospect of getting "the tube" (the London Overground is not the tube, and doesn't offer tube-style frequency), that they're losing sight of the fact that services from Denmark Hill and Peckham Rye to central London are being cut significantly.
  10. DJKQ, I think he was asking for business proposals, not for ideas from the community.
  11. I work very close to Moorgate. If it's early enough (around 7:45) I can save about 5 minutes by getting the tube instead of walking. But there's not much difference.
  12. I wouldn't describe Selfridges as chavvy - almost all the clothes in there are out of my price range. The real chavvy places are the big "designer discount" retail parks.
  13. I think for the price they're charging, redevelopment of the existing building wouldn't be profitable enough. It will almost certainly be knocked down.
  14. The Uplands was pretty bad. When I first came to ED, the Uplands was one of the more "fancy" pubs. It had obvious gastro aspirations, complete with open kitchen, but the food was horrid.
  15. St Pancras is now one of the nicest stations around. And while I've not been in the hotel, the frontage now looks absolutely stunning. And the wider Kings Cross area is smarter and less seedy than it used to be. Locally... Foresters Arms was a complete shithole (I don't care if it had pool tables), The Bishop is a lot better, despite the influx of knobs on the weekends. The Tiger in Camberwell is a massive improvement over the Silver Buckle.

Horsey stuff in Greenwich and shooting in Woolwich - can't imagine either is exactly a huge draw! But I guess the organisers must know what they're talking about...
  17. I think it's fine, but not exactly essential.
  18. Can somebody explain why London Bridge (national rail) is going to be busy? Are we expecting athletes/tourists/officials/etc to be staying in SE London, Croydon, Kent, etc? Or are there venues in these areas?

    New in town

ED has bars, but nothing you'd really describe as "nightlife". You'd have to go over to Brixton, or failing that, central London.
  20. We could ask Republican Action Against Drugs to conduct the drug testing. Positive tests result in a kneecapping.

  22. All this talk of markets - Spitalfields is the obvious one IMO.
  23. "Trendy" parts of London, e.g. Hackney, Dalston.
  24. "Snub"? There are loads of places the relay isn't visiting. I'm with Sue, I really don't care. It's just a stupid metal torch - you can even buy them on ebay.
