  1. Some local info relating to Brendan's potted history of US punk: -local (well, Norwood) band Mouthwash released an album on Hellcat records, after supporting Rancid in London. Not that I particularly approve of either band. -Guns n' Wankers material was originally relased on Crystal Palace based Rugger Bugger records, before later being re-issued on Fat Wreck. I certainly approve of this band.
  2. I doubt that The Clash really influenced the Californian punk-pop stuff much. More like Ramones, Replacements, Husker Du, Screeching Weasel, etc. But of course it's wide open to debate, it's hard (or impossible) to say for sure who influenced who!
  3. Brendan Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > The Clash were just a band the Ramones were the > paradigm-shifters. Wrong, The Clash were very innovative... they were pioneers in terms of political content. And by blending reggae/ska and other styles with the punk formula, they paved the way for a whole load of new bands whose influence can still be heard in today's new music. I do love The Ramones, but their records were essentially stripped down 50s rock n roll played badly. You can arguably hear their influence in tracks like "white riot", but The Clash very quickly moved forwards.
  4. Don't give me that "poor chap" b*ll*cks. He approached me a while ago, told me that he'd been stabbed in the neck. I was very civil but told him I didn't have any change (which was true). He then followed me into safeways, and when he saw that I'd been given change then approached me again. Please nobody give this scumbag any money, hopefully he'll then sod off.
  5. Maybe so Annasfield. But if the lounge isn't the place for generalisations, I don't know where is!
  6. Brendan, if you think there are lots of orange girls in London, you obviously haven't been to Newcastle or Liverpool!
  7. The area is still a bit "rough and ready" if you ask me... there are some nice places on there though, it's definitely improved a lot over the last few years.
  8. I also got the 0% offer letter. I guess there is nothing to lose by taking up this offer, as long as you put it on with another agent too. Otherwise you may find that they are much more interested in selling someone else's property which they WILL be earning commission on.
  9. Sean, India has a serious poverty problem (just as China does). I'm sure I read recently that 1/3 of India's population live on less than $1 a day. Preventable diseases are rife. "Third world" may or may not be accurate, but it is still a developing nation. It's a very unsuitable frame of reference.
  10. The UK is one of the worlds richest countries... we have clean running water and sewage, welfare benefits... we don't live in slums, or pour human waste into the streets and rivers. Yes we have modern medicine and a free health service, but that's just one of the factors!
  11. For me (near-ish the Library), the quickest route is to drive to Canada Water, park for free by the cinema, and get the tube the one last stop... 30 minutes on a good day. However, I try not to use the car more than I have to, so usually do the regular train & jubilee line, which takes about 50 mins.

Maybe it's a Les Paul Studio? They are a bit thinner (and cheaper). Jah Lush Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Then, I'd suggest a Les Paul Junior or a > Telecaster. Telecasters aren't my bag... it's a bit of an old man's guitar! I quite like the Fender Jaguar though. Of course the best guitars are Gordon Smiths... which are British, hooray! Sorry to hijack the thread...
  13. Les Paul - too heavy Strat - neck too thick
  14. "killed a man for his giro today"... worst pun in history. He's about as poetic and wise as my bony arse!
  15. Yes, freedom fries and freedom dressing.
  16. And the rest just did not give a s***.
  17. Mark - I'm not sure your east/west argument is really that helpful... in the interest of objectivity: Modern "scientific" medicine did originate in Europe, so is Western in a sense, even though it is now practised elsewhere. But there are also practitioners of other forms of medicine throughout the western world. Certain traditional "spiritual" medicines such as acupuncture and reiki originated in Asia, so can be said to be Eastern, even though they are now practised elsewhere. There are now also practitioners of western/scientific medicine throughout Asia. Why is Eastern/Western such an inappropriate distinction?
  18. Yeah... as andyng says... selling your own house is all well and good if you've got someone who's always at home to show people around.
  19. I saw it. Yes he may have picked his subjects carefully, but you can't deny that the interviewees did a pathetically bad job of answering his criticisms! The thing is... we've already agreed that the people who believe in these treatments aren't usually the kind of people who require scientific evidence/explanations, so I can't really see him changing anyone's minds. The main purpose this programme (and his books) serve is so us non-believers can give ourselves a nice pat on the back.
  20. Some forumites agreed, While others were peeved...
  21. when the forum went football mad I hoped they would tire of this fad.
  22. Similar prices, as far as I remember. Each to their own, it's worth a try if you like Thai food!!
  23. You can drop off paint cans at the tip in West Dulwich. But unless they're pretty full, they will just end up in the same skip as all the general junk.
  24. This one could be heading for rather a crude finale...
