  1. Yep, the outside space is a great selling point for that place. Looks like they're building some kind of outside bar too? Food... if I'm going to a pub in the evening, it will be primarily to drink. If I order food it's purely to serve a function, and I don't want to pay much over a tenner for it!
  2. Even if it turns into a community co-op thing, it still needs to be financially viable, and they need to think how best to use the space.
  3. Keep your hair on, hernehiller! I'd love the see the venue survive, but would worry about the feasibility of a *dedicated* music venue. It can be pretty difficult to turn a music venue into a viable business, and I think there's a limited market for it in that location. My experience was that the venue wasn't doing that well and was under-used (but maybe you have personal experience to the contrary?) People with families don't go out as much as younger people without families. No point denying that. So I'm suggesting that maybe a flexible space would be a good idea, which could be used for lunchtime dining space, or toddler groups, social groups/clubs, or private hire, etc - as well as a gig now and again. And (not that I'm obliged to justify myself to anyone) I speak as a parent, and a music lover, and someone who has played in gigging bands for 20 years...
  4. Yep, my gut instinct is that while the average Herne Hill resident might love the idea of having a local music venue, in practise they might not use it a lot. It's a pretty residential area... lots of families. Hence my line of questioning. I think they need to either make the venue a real draw (by attracting the right bands/promoters), or have something more tailored to the demographic.

  6. Problem is that you really need to slow down to around 10mph to go over some bumps. It's not unreasonable to want to drive at, say, 20mph in between the bumps... in which case "backing off the accelerator just before the bump" is not quite going to do the trick. Your logic is a bit flawed regarding the cyclist behind... if average speed is the same (or in reality a little bit faster), then it's not going to make much difference to the cyclist.
  7. Would be interesting to see what direction they go in. Will they try to attract up-and-coming/underground bands with a bit of a buzz about them? Or is it going to be covers/tribute acts, ironic ukelele ensembles, and "pop choirs"?
  8. The Ivy House is a slightly different setup, because the room can be used as regular pub space when there's no event on (which presumably could be an option for the Half Moon too?)
  9. Sorry... yes I meant if the challenge fails.. what's the next step? Making a music venue work isn't easy, and it's a pretty big space... just wondering if there are any specific ideas/proposals for it.
  10. Huh. I actually always thought HH was quite nice. When I was buying my first flat I wanted a place in Herne Hill, but couldn't afford it, so ended up in ED. Both areas have changed since, of course... but like JL says, nice to have the choice. So if it gets listed as an asset of community value... what next? Community buyout? Who's going to run the place? Who's going to be responsible for booking bands/comedy/etc?
  11. Yes I also seem to remember it was a chippy before. Seem to recall it was quite good.
  12. Just thought I'd add - from what I've seen, PeckhamPlex and Franks are both set to continue, and will be included in the new plans.

Depends. I wouldn't cross if a car was already indicating to turn. But if it's not indicating, then I'll cross. Most drivers seem fine to wait... unless they're a black cab driver.
  14. Lowlander Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Humans have a right of way over cars at street > junctions - when is that ever enforced? Well I think the rule is pedestrians have right of way if they're already crossing before the car turns into the junction. Surely most drivers do obey this rule?

    Car Jump

On a tangent - is it actually possible to push start a modern car (electronic engine management, keyless ignition, etc)?

I think in London neighbours are often reluctant to "break the ice" because they think it's not the done thing. But I reckon if you actually talk to them, you'll be surprised. While some of them will inevitably turn out to be miserable, unfriendly, or downright hostile, the other 25% will probably be quite normal and friendly.
  17. Fox - I thought you frequently enjoyed kebabs and curries? If you're happy to eat that stuff (inevitably the cheapest meat they can lay their hands on) then I don't think you need to worry whether this place will meat your standards. James - yes I have no doubt that a diet heavy in veg with less meat (especially red meat) is much more healthy. But the public get what the public want - and the Meat Liquor chain is phenomenally popular. Besides, people eat out for a treat, it needn't reflect your daily diet.
  18. Weekend train service from East Dulwich is a joke. Always has been. And people wonder why we have cars...
  19. There are all sort of things I can cook at home. Doesn't mean I'm not willing to pay a few quid to sit in a restaurant and get someone else to do it for me! This ribeye burger of yours, Fox... sounds extravagant. Do you mince it yourself, or do you get the butcher to do it for you?

Glazkov withdrew with a knee injury in the third. IMO winner of this should be ordered to fight Glazkov (of course I know it doesn't necessarily work like that).
  21. Angelina - maybe not "exciting" to some, but not everyone would agree. I can't think of anywhere else in ED to get a good burger. East Dulwich Village - yes the owners definitely know about the EDF, but why not just contact them directly if this is something that genuinely concerns you? Fox - "People simply have to have to most expensive burger they can find"... seriouly? Change the record! ML is not cheap as such... but around a tenner for cheeseburgers and fries, it's hardly the most expensive burger around.

Or just buy a charger. A couple of hours on charge may be enough to get the car to start.

    So sad

All premature human death is a sad waste. But.. if he was gonna die.. this seems like an appropriate way to go.
  24. "Old"? They are hardly ancient...
