I'm afraid they were taken off as it causes a high load on the server where this website lives. It runs on a shared server and the other websites that it shares with were being affected so we got told off and had to find ways to reduce the load. The "show the number of threads" feature has to count all the unread posts for each section for each person then show the number and as there's about 2,000 people a day on the site it's quite intensive. We're looking at upgrading the software soon so that feature will come back or we have to move the site to a dedicated server which is about ?900 a year. So it's something we had to do temporarily to stop the site being taken down, sorry you miss it but we hope to have it back.

She'llsurvive of course you would get different answers as they're different questions. I think they should have asked "if we see someone not pick up their dog's poo should we rub their nose in it?" I'm sure that'll reduce the amount in the area if it was a punishment that could be actioned. [edited once]

About two years ago (maybe three) there was a piece of paper delivered through my door asking my opinion on the Green, the fence etc. I remember seeing the questionnaire in the gym, the library and notices on the fence of the Green too. It just seems to be a couple of you that didn't know about it which is a shame as I know they did try and get as many opinions in as possible. Since then FoGG has been set up so you can stay abreast of what's happening. nancysmum , sorry I don't know what the community wardens "area" is, pop in their office and ask them. The removal of the fence was not initiated by members of FoGG, they all have different opinions about what should happen to the fence but they all have the Green's best interest at heart.

There was a meeting held early one evening on the Green attended by Councillors, people from the Parks department and some locals. Following that meeting a decision was made, however the decision was made not just based on that meeting, it took into account other things like the consultation with the general public that happened previously.
-
So am I right in thinking that the entire BBC is to blame for this incident? Blimey.
-
Sorry nancysmum but there was a consultation period, published results, a public meeting or two etc etc. You can't really expect them to change their mind now can you? Your best bet is to let your feelings be known after the 6 month period that the fence has been removed, of course if you've signed up on the Friends of Goose Green site you'll even get an email to tell you about any important news and events regarding the fence.

I walked past the Green the other morning about 8 o'clock and there were four dog walkers having a chat with their dogs in the "no dog area". They weren't the scary staffie types, just the type to made me think "they really don't give a shit about the whether there's a fence there or not." Anyway, I just spoke to Anne Bernard who is the Project Manager, Area Renewal, Office of the Deputy Chief Executive, Southwark Council. She told me that she has had one cost in from a contractor and is awaiting another before they'll make a decision about the fence, hopefully it will come in the next two weeks. So it's taken four months to get two costs in from contractors! That's rubbish (management of a project). If these quotes aren't competitive enough then she'll ask around for some more quotes, I did suggest that she gets some more quotes in now anyway but she has other things to do. She also said that ideally it will be done this financial year (end of march 2009) but she did say three months ago she said that ideally it will be done by the end of October (that's now). It's a shame because others in the council work really hard to ensure the Green is looked after but they're let down by the lackadaisical attitude of others who just ain't bovvered.

No, it's been acceptable since the 40's when candid camera did it. Jeremey Beadle did it too, so did Noel Edmonds. Chris Morris was rather good at it. [Edited once]

Hi As well as the Councillor's statement about their decision to remove the fence, all the details of the people involved and can be seen on here http://www.friendsofgoosegreen.org.uk/index.php?mact=News,cntnt01,detail,0&cntnt01articleid=1&cntnt01dateformat=%25d%20%25B%2C%20%25Y&cntnt01returnid=34

I noticed that, including the fake bench.
-
yes, they're still planning to remove it, I'm not sure when though. When I asked 8 months ago they (the council) said were going to "...arrange a site meeting to agree dates and a method statement" and as far as I know nothing has been done. I'll keep you posted if I hear anything.

nancysmum Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Maybe Southwark should suggest the community > wardens to come out of their comfy office on east > dulwich road and patrol the green and surrounding > areas. They do patrol the Green already, they don't have to as it's not "their area" but they do out of the kindness of they're hearts and to to stop the Friends of Goose Green pestering them to do it. Have you seen them just sitting in the office then when they should be working? The notice boards referred to are Goose Green notice boards to give notices about Goose Green on a board. There's even details on them about how to join the Friends of Goose Green. No one posted a cat lost poster on there and is being fined for it.

Recently I've seen and enjoyed The Lives Of Others and Son of Rambow, give those a try Jeremy.

I'll answer this if I may Admin. We are hoping to run the vote again this year, we hear all the bars are jealous of the trophies behind the bar at the Black Cherry and Bishop and so it would be good to do so. We maybe having some other East Dulwich awards too and if it happens then you'll be the first to hear about it. Voting will probably start at the end of November, beginning of December and we may also be looking for sponsors to help us with getting this going. If you have any ideas for categories for local awards then please let us know, nothing negative please like "shop most likely to fail in the next year". All serious suggestions considered.

The Blake mural has been painted over by the Council
Mark replied to Mark's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I popped along last week but unfortunately missed the crowd but did get to chat to Ursula. The Artist wants two or three weeks to work on the painting next year including having some sort of workshop to involve the locals as he may want to develop a new idea rather than just repaint the same picture. The aim is to "launch" the painting at the Dulwich Fair next May. I feel that, putting aside the blue paint indecent, the council have taken this seriously and are working hard to put something back. As for the tagging i think it follows the Fixing Broken Windows theory, basically when one person does something, others follow. The trick here is to report any graffiti that you see as soon as possible. There were some tags on the new Goose Green notice boards, I reported it online Wednesday and it was gone by Friday Southwark's online Graffiti reporting website: https://securesite.southwark.gov.uk/ShowForm.asp?fm_fid=236 Added: ...and apparently the wall's going to be covered with an anti-graffiti coating. Where can I buy a Travel Card - TONIGHT!!!
Mark replied to Clinker's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
the newsagent opposite the Vale (between Goose Green roundabout and the train station) and the one kind of opposite the station too. And the newsagent in the row of shops at the top of Goose Green, Peckham Rye side. They'll sort you out TONIGHT!!!! -
They're of the "social observations" genre, an interesting read about stuff that happens with people and society, a bit like Freakanomics. I picked up Tipping Point at the airport and liked it so I bought the other one later, to be honest didn't realise there is/was a fuss about them. If you like non-fiction, people watching and are curious about how and why some things happen in the world and society you will probably like these. It won't change your life but some parts might make you stroke your chin, look skywards and say hmmmmm. Let me know if that appeals and you want to borrow them.

I read them and found them interesting, then I saw this: MALCOLM GLADWELL LIVE IN LONDON! The author of The Tipping Point and Blink in a unique event at the West End's beautiful Lyceum Theatre. Come along and listen and make yourself look clever to your friends afterwards. Exclusive Popbitch Credit Crunch Ticket Discount here: http://www.ticketmaster.co.uk/promo/dcxbyf Anyone interested in coming along, Mon 24 Nov 2008 evening, about ?20? And has anyone seen the big haired fella speaking before? Is he any good?

I asked the guy in the ticket office when they were going to be ready, he said "within the next year, and by the way they're just validators, pre-pay won't work on them". That scuppers my dream of using the train more often then.

We've finally got it together and are proud to announce the new section of the forum, The Family Room, where you can chat about the family outside of the other sections of the site. We are also going to allow buying, selling and recommending of family related items in here too (for a trial period just to see if it works). The way to think of it is that if your post is what do you think about?/discuss/wanted/offered/recommendation/advice wanted/ etc about a baby/child/parent/family topic then put it in the Family Room. To do that go to the Family Room section and click on the link that says Start New Thread (you must be registered and logged in to do this.) This section has a lower tolerance of abuse than the rest of the forum and please help us to keep it a decent place by reporting any abuse to the Administrator or simply by clicking the "report this message" link underneath every message. All reports are treated as confidential. Most importantly we simply want it to be fun and useful for East Dulwich residents, if you have any suggestions on how we can improve it please email us (email link at the bottom of every page). Typical topics that would be in this area (we will be moving some recent topics in there): Primary Schools in East Dulwich Nurseries Schools in ED and nearby NCT classes - what to look for? Baby groups in the area wanted Child friendly pubs Child clothing for sale Nanny Share in East Dulwich Where can I buy a school uniform? Bugaboo Bee or Stokke? Advice needed - passport photo for a baby? Childcare wanted We hope you enjoy it.

macroban Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > The Council has no audit trail to identify the individual that authorised this work and subsequent contractor payment? I'd suggest that we just get the mural fixed/restored then and then, those who want to, can go on a witch hunt to see who authorised it. Perhaps the perpetrator will redeem themselves during the restoration process by ensuring it gets done swiftly. -
What Horsebox said. I give them respect for what they do and what they're trying to do in their job to help the community and not if they have a swagger or are carrying food. I like the fact they actually interact with people, I recently chatted to one PCSO in the queue in Somerfields and it was good to meet him, he got respect from me for "being a real person". It reminded me of seeing NYPD officers in coffee shops having a coffee, makes them more human and approachable, even if they are in uniform.
