Alan Apart from places like New Zealand where the population is low enough to manage a pandemic, how many world wide governments have actually got their response correct and nor made any mistakes at all ? Not many from what I can see and numbers are rising across Europe despite their policies so let's face it, whilst our government hasn't got everything right, they aren't alone in that fact! I guess we could go the way of China and go super strict on freedom but that's not the correct way either 😱

That sort of rhetoric is exactly why numbers are rising because people assume that it's someone else's issue to deal with. It's not it's ALL OUR ISSUE. Whilst it is not going to be a popular opinion, the government are doing everything they can to balance the economy and save lives but, and this is a big but, we all need to step up and protect ourselves Contact is how this virus is transmitted, not some government plot to infect us all, so we all have our part to play by following the rules to help defeat this virus and to stop a major disaster. If we don't then no matter what any government does, we will all fail.

Good point Blah Blah Everyone can do their bit to help slow the spread. Wear a face mask fully covering your mouth and nose when in shops and other required areas. Wearing it just covering your mouth is as dangerous as not wearing it. Where possible stick to the 2m rule (despite everything the rule is still there with the exception of where it's not practical i.e. going for a haircut or similar activity that needs closer contact.) Wash your hands frequently and for the required time. Use the track and trace app and if you are asked to isolate do so, it may save your or a close family members life. If you show signs of Covid, isolate and book.a test Most of all stay safe, stay alive.

Whilst the letter highlighted by blah blah has some obvious fake names, I am concerned by its contents as they are basically calling for the elderly and vulnerable to be shielded again and for healthy people to catch covid, the so called herd immunity that was so wildly poo pooed 6 months ago. However what the signatures of the letter fail to recognise is that healthy people can get long covid as a result, which leaves them with serious debilitating side effects that may have even longer consequences for their lives and health. https://www.longcovid.org/resources This on top of the cricket games attracting crowds on Rye Lane really concerns me that people have become covid nonchalant which may well come back to bite them !

@rahrahrah The question you raise about not offering alternatives, as there hasn't or possibly won't be a consultation by the council, anything anyone offered on here is irrelevant and what a lot of people are simply asking for is a proper consultation process on road closures to be run with concerns and views of all not just the few being taken into consideration. Do you think changes that effect so many should be pushed through without a proper and inclusive consultation ?

Two separate points The improvement in public transport, as mentioned above, is the real solution but it's possible that the cost is too high so the approach is go for the low cost option of penalising car drivers and make them walk and cycle. Very shortsighted IMHO. Second point, has anyone noticed the increased heavy traffic using side roads coming off Lordship Lane where people are trying to bypass the closure or finding other routes to get to their destination ?

Ex I'm concerned by your statement " if you're driving 20km then you probably have a few more possibilities that don't affect the overall time of the journey." Are you saying that people can't drive through our back yard to get to wherever but it's okay as they will find routes through other people's backyards ? All well and good but as councils are putting in LTNs in everyone's back yard, then that 10 mile journey (we still use miles not km in this country) will take 2 or 3 times as long,producing more pollution and possibly a higher accident risk for others as frustration boils up. That journey may be essential, it may not but we don't know only the driver does.

I love the fact that Government and Local authorities reward failure as they expect all the money to be spent and punish those who don't spend it all by reducing what they get next time. This encourages mad spending schemes. If the system was that they rewarded those that saved money by allowing them to bank the savings and use it for bigger projects later on, then instead of spending on speed bumps we might end up with better facilities locally as they can combine savings over a number of years. Completely bonkers backwards system IMHO

New software / apps always have teething bugs, I suspect that in this case they will be quickly ironed our with future updates. As a result keep on using it, report bugs you see to help in this process and stay safe.

Rockets and fairTgirl Couldn't agree more. The council and councillors are just paying lip service to people whilst ignoring them totally. Come elections they won't be happy to lose their seats I suspect.

The whole concept of streaming directly to a customer by the studios is half the reason cinemas declined back in the 80s when films were available on VHS so people put off going as renting it was cheaper then going to the cinema After a few years technology changed in the cinemas and people fell in love with the big screen again so numbers went up again. If the studios go down the path of streaming then whilst convenient for some, the cinemas won't survive after this pandemic which will result in a lost revenue stream for the studios (people who go to the cinema are often tempted to buy and rewatch the film at home after) Today "the Batman" and Dune movies followed bond by delaying their launch dates which is another reason cinemas are temporarily closing their doors as there aren't enough good new films to draw the audiences in. Can't blame the Studios for their decision as they need to recoup the production costs but by the same token they aren't doing enough to maintain the cinema chains through the next 6 months. Let's hope and pray that the Picturehouse chain and peckham plex have the good fortune to weather this situation as I for one miss the big screen experience.
