  1. Going back to the 20mph comments above - when will it be accepted that 20mph is a waste of time and money and revert to 30mph?
  2. I have just been looking at the same - I have not tried anything yet, but have just found that the micro scooter company also make a balance bike. It says that it only weighs 3.2kg which seems super light. http://www.micro-scooters.co.uk/scooters-type-micro-balance-bikes/micro-g-bike-plus-green-2.html Has anyone tried one of these?
  3. This will be a rambly post, so bear with me... I don't like the subterfuge around getting cars out of central London. If that is really the motive, just be upfront about it and either increase vehicle tax for cars registered within central London, or increase the congestion charge zone to perhaps the North and South Circulars, or indeed the M25, or enact another economic penalty, rather than pfaff around with ridiculous road infrastructure works. Then residents and users can make an informed decision about the value of owning/using a car in these areas. For me, there are certain times I want to drive a car, no matter how long or annoying the journey is - rain/cold/transporting a lot of stuff/late night journeys etc. Cars are generally very comfortable, have great stereo systems, and are not exactly expensive to run when compared to public transport. They give you the freedom to travel as and when you want and not be subjected to fickle public transport. I commute by bicycle 5 days a week, and would never consider driving into central London during mon-fri peak hour traffic, but outside these times I enjoy using the car compared to the alternatives currently available. I was aware Labour had 20mph zones as a priority, but I did not support them. Unfortunately election trends show that generally inner city areas support Labour.
  4. Yes, you hear quite a few aussie accents around.
  5. First mate, yes sorry, in a roundabout fashion I was trying to say pretty much all the cars exceed 20mph as they are all faster than me up or downhill! 30mph made much more sense for all road users.
  6. I agree first mate, that the limit should, and indeed does, apply to all road user. However as a cyclist, I don't have a speed measurement device on my bike, thus I can only judge the speed limit by how fast other vehicles travel. I would think I'm well exceeding 20mph downhill, but it is a rare event that I pass a car (ie they are all travelling faster than me) unless its approaching a red traffic light.
  7. Get a slingdhot and start practising...
  8. Well, the local councils need to fund their pension plans somehow...
  9. On a slightly different note, major manufacturers are now releasing electric dirtbikes that are claimed to perform as well as petrol engines - utterly silent running, and they look the business. So the whine and whiff od 2-strokes may be coming to an end!
  10. Completely agree LKR! A few anchors placed on the road, or kerbs directly adjacent to the road would likely knock a lot of the theft on the head. James Barber, if you're reading, how can we campaign for road anchors?
  11. Hi Ginebra, Can you say which road this was on? I live on Underhill with a motorbike so am interested!
  12. "Oh my god - a couple of motor cars passed my house today - What a noise they made! LOL - Yawn I can't sleep because of such inconsiderate people driving there motors past my house! And what with the aircraft Jeeez - when can we get back to horse and cart! PMSL" Funny you say this - now Underhill Road is back open to buses, had forgotten what a racket they make!
  13. "I come from the approach that we should imagine how it could work, rather than why it couldn't?. happy to organise a meeting if enough people are interested." I like this approach!
  14. I set cruise control to about 19mph last night for the drive along Sydenham Hill. Painful. And 3 cars roared past me between the the speed camera and the roundabout at the forest hill end.
  15. Yes. I would be interested. I reverted to a bread machine, which is great - as it is a hassle to maintain a sourdough starter, but the rye/spelt bread it bakes, whilst not looking great, tastes amazing.
  16. Started this morning ! At 7am driving to Crystal Palace park all was ok...but 8am driving to work it already looked like carnage...
  17. I realise this will not be much help - but I think the person that parked the car there has crossed the bounds of acceptability by such a large margin I would not hold back on getting that car out of the way. Find some guys at the pub to move it, or pay a tow truck to move it into a clamping zone. Unbelievable !

You lot always find something > about the UK to complain about! What an insightful addition to this thread.
  19. I wonder when the cameras in and around east dulwich will begin enforcing the 20mph zones - those near the Harris Academy etc.
  20. Ah, so 20mph enforcement is now live! After all the previous posts months back about the 20mph limits being un-enforced. Southwark will make a fortune.
  21. Thanks for the info. Buses in general don't seem to concerned about the 20mph limit. I guess it conflicts with their schedules?
  22. No, it's Southwark.
  23. "No, you also have to take into account those landlords which own the property outright (only about 50% of private landlords have a mortgage), plus those landlords which are businesses and would not have a mortgage as such, but a business loan or other form of funding." You could be right. So basically, this move, if it does push up rent rates, will increase the yield for cash rich professional landlords (politicians) and raise the barrier to entry for thise that need to borrow. I am starting to see the logic from an MP's mind now...
  24. 20mph feels vey very very very slow on the main roads of the borough. I am -trying- to abide by the limit...but am getting very sick of other drivers sitting as close as they possibly can, then roaring past at the slimmest chance. I opined on previous threads that this has made the roads less safe, rather than safer.
