Thanks Administrator, the link is a little outdated now.

The link describes how that model works. There were various comments on the old 20mph threads that hinted the older cameras that were in place couldn't be reprogrammed to 20mph (no idea whether that was true or not), but the installation of twin cameras does suggest to me enforcement of 20mph is now game on!
-
Admin, for my info, why is this Lounge material and not General ED ?
-
Just noticed this morning that the single central speed camera (which alternated directions every week or so) has recently been replaced with twin cameras (so both directions now monitored), I believe the model in the link below: http://www.speedcamerasuk.com/speedcurb.htm The road has recently been resurfaced where the strips are painted on the road, so assume there are new sensors under the asphalt (as described in link). I guess this is to start actually policing the 20mph zone?

So that assumes the treasury estimates only 1 in 7 landlords pay tax higher than the basic rate? Yet this is meant to equalise the playing field? It simply doesn't make sense to me. The tone of government language now seems to focus on these areas as "costing" the government tax revenue...when in actual fact it isn't costing the government anything, it is simply additional revenue to help balance previous uneconomic polices. Feels to me like the conservatives are now in effect the labour party...I wonder which party will fill the previous conservative hole.

DaveR, ok, so perhaps it forces BTL businesses into a corporate structure. I still think it sets an alarming precedent that the government will pick and choose allowable tax deductible expenses as it pleases. Such a changeable environment would, I believe, discourage small business.
-
Bob, this is one of Osbornes proposals being mooted at the moment - pension contributions being paid from net (taxed) income, and withdrawn upon retirement tax-free. This is what is meant when comments are made about pensions being made into "ISA-style investments". I, for one, would have no faith, that if paid net contributions now and through my working life, that future governments would honour leaving them as tax-free income during retirement.
-
I seem to be alone here, but I don't believe the change to the tax treatment for BTL investment is a good idea, as it sets a precedent for the disallowance of tax deductible expenses. The basic premise of a business is that expenses are deductible. What we have now is the government saying that for this particular type of business, mortgage interest expenses are not fully deductible, as this is "costing" the government lost taxation revenue, so lets say only a part of this expense is tax deductible in order to claw back some tax revenue. Its just BTL businesses coincide with a sensitive area - housing. Which business will be targeted next when there is a budget black hole? Shall we say plumbers make too much money, therefore lets disallow the taxible deduction of an apprentices salary, as that is costing the government tax revenue? Continuing on the budget theme of this thread, the one area that particularly worries me are the proposals to change the pension system, from that of tax free contributions/taxed benefits upon withdrawal, to one of fully taxed contributions and tax free benefits upon withdrawal. This raises some areas of concern to me: 1) what incentive will anyone have to contribute to their pension investment without tax savings? and if people are not incentivised, the governments of future years will simply face a huge burden of now providing state pensions to entire generations of workers that did not invest in their retirement. 2) if you are retiring in 30 ish years, do you trust that all governments over say, the next 60 years, would honour the committment to allow your pension savings (if, for some reason you did contribute) to be withdrawn tax free? I wouldn't! It will simply be another pot of meney a successive government will view as a source of prompt tax revenue. So there is a massive risk that you will be double taxed. 3) how is it possible to plan in such a changing tax environment? So, there was a good alternative for people to finance their retirements - BTL properties - relatively skill free and accessible to many. So now that tax relief is being reduced on these...whats left?

Well, haven't been there, and I realise thats your question, but the screenings in Dulwich park are great! Must admit sitting on concrete and limited space put me off the Lido screenings.

They replied with "I have attached a map which shows your property is affected by arriving flights when Heathrow is on westerly operations", so reading into that I guess depending wind there is either easterly or westerly landing patterns?
-
I did complain to heathrow about the recent noise levels - they responded and have sent me a map of westerly landing paths. Yes, we are right in the think of it!

Was the traffic normal this morning to Elephant?
bobbsy replied to damzel's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Ahh, I didn't actually mean it as a justification for the works/funding, I just meant it to commute at the moment through the traffic gridlock. With stationary vehicles, bicycles were even better than scooters/motorbikes this morning. -

Bicycle is the way forward! Lovely weather and much faster than bus/car. -

Absolute gridlock this morning. In the bus lane from Walworth to the traffic lights south of the E&C roundabout, I counted an unbroken line of 35 buses...everyone queuing across each interesection...hours to get through that. -
I don't think its *worse* this year, but I do think it's seasonal - seems to pick up around late april/early may. its definitely worse than it was during the winter. Bloody annoying. In the late evening, its so loud, and constant, if I'm watching TV with the window open i often pause the TV to wait for the noise to subside.

Beer Drinking in the Goose Green Playground
bobbsy replied to DearBBC's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Agree with Jeremy. By the logic some posters are putting forward I derive that it's fine to have say 5 beers at home BEFORE going to the playground as long as: a) you can hold your drink and don't appear drunk b) you have both hands free "just in case" c) you don't have a drink in hand at the playground even though this is technically legal d) cleaned your teeth and took a breath mint so no-one can smell alcohol But let's clamp down on the person who happens to be holding a drink whilst supervising children. Maybe we should also ban people supervising children eating mints as it's possible they have been drinking and are trying to disguise it. -
edhistory, adonirum. i think the situation is clear. move on.

Uber's seemed cheaper initially. Last week I used an Uber for 1 leg of a journey - ?18. 2 hours later a Black Cab back for the reverse trip - ?14. That was on the normal fee structure. Black Cab drivers in central London have amazing route knowledge that a sat-nav unfortunately can't replicate regarding traffic patterns and quickest routes at different times of the day. Black cabs are very reasonable for short journeys in town, particularly with 4 or 5 passengers on the same route, often working out cheaper than the Tube. I agree Black Cabs should have enforced low emissions. Mini-cabs are generally far more economical for longer journeys. However the last I caught from Heathrow back to East Dulwich in peak hour morning traffic took almost 2 1/2 hours, so you do get what you pay for - they blindly follow the satnav routing.
