I really rate spiritualist churches, When I was diagnosed with a serious illness some years ago and literally didn't know where to turn I felt drawn to the spiritualist Church in Notting hill (where I was living at the time) and the wonderful women there gave me spiritual healing. Whether you believe in it or nor it gave me tremendous comfort and it was so wonderful to feel so cared about and welcomed by complete strangers. I'd be interested in getting the details of the Eltham spiritualist church. Is it our nearest? And how does one get there?

Forest Hill Road Practice - in Meltdown ?
NewWave replied to George Orwell's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I think this is Par for the course these days I'm afraid. I'm with a practise in Sydenham (no one else would have us..even though ours isn't the nearest or the one most my neighbours are at) and I can't get through on the phone, sometimes it takes 31 calls and two days calling only to finally get through and be told there are no appointments for at least two weeks etc, My repeat perscription (which I can't be without and can't stop suddenly) is always not being sent on time to Boots so they end up giving me emergency meds. Its a joke I can't afford private but I have no faith in my GP whatsover. -
Really depressing : (

leaves swallowing machine disturbing early sleepers
NewWave replied to buddug's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I'd rather be woken early than know an elderly neighbour has slipped and broken her wrist on slippery pavements caused by wet leaves as has indeed happened in the past. If it bothers you wear earplugs. -
Wrap-up London is a superb campaign. Its true that a warm coat can save a life. I'm wholeheartedly behind it. I donated last year and I'll look through my cupboards this year.

Moving away from the wedding dress debate and onto how much it saddens me that greedy landlords are homogenising yet another high st. The only people who can afford these kind of rents are the chains and London is losing its 'villages' and becoming just one giant sprawl of Starbucks,Nando's Pizza shops, Tesco express etc etc... I saw it happen with Notting Hill where I lived for over 40years,Its happened to Shorditch, Clapham, SoHo Islington.Marylebone. When I visited Paris recently I was at once struck and charmed by how many independent shops there were, Young designers, niche and specalist shops selling things like buttons or old lamps. Our city is becoming bland-we were once a nation of shopkeepers now it seems we are a nation of Coffee drinking Pizza Eating internet shoppers. Sad

I think there is a > discussion to be had about that and find it > dismaying that so many of you are trying to shoot > that down. FYI I am a shop assistant and I don't earn much-in fact not much over the minimum wage. HOWEVER it is MY MONEY to spend how I chose, and even if I had paid the full retail value for the dress-so what? Ive worked hard all my life and I think I should be allowed to spend my earnings in whichever way makes me happy. Some spend thousands on a holiday-I don't but I don't slag them off for their choice. I never would-I'd be happy for them being able to enjoy something they'd dreamed of through their own hard graft. We all have different things that mean a lot to us-I happen to love clothes and I care deeply about breast cancer charities for reasons I won't divulge on a public forum, for me that shop was a way I could give something back. Now I will find another way to help the fight, it may be selling clothes on ebay and donating direct to the charity but thats beside the point. Please don't slag me off.

to set the record straight I donated a dress which happily because I work in retail I got for less. I know really see why I have to justify myself here though. I could have spent 5k on a dress and give ?20k a year in charitable donations for all you know. Although that isn't the case I think you're a sad lot for slagging me off for donating an item of value to a charity I care about. And FYI 100% of the sale of donated goods DID go to the charity.

figgins Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Is this the 'posh' charity shop near Goose Green? > The only surprise is that it lasted so long. Give and take were more than just a 'posh' charity shop-a portion of the money went to breast cancer charities, and they were the ONLY shop that donated specifically to breast cancer research. They've been going at least 2 years to the best of my knowledge, but I had noticed that the quality of donations and garments they were se-selling for people had gone downhill in the past 6months. I'm gutted its gone-I used to donate all my no longer wanted designer garments to them (I even donated a Karl Largerfeld wedding gown costing originally nearly 5k ). Breast Cancer affects so many women -and men-it was a shop with a worthy cause and I really upset that the people on this forum are only worrying about how they can make money from their unwanted clothes as opposed to being upset at the loss of a way to donate to a worthwhile charity. This is a cause that mens a lot to me so apologies if I've gone off on one!

She is in my thoughts. We moan about such crap sometimes and threads like this remind us how precious and fragile life is.

Watch out, watch out! Charity Bag Thieves about!
NewWave replied to immyp's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I always give direct to the charity shops. Never ever leave things in bags outside the shops bin-divers go through them and probably sell things in car boot sales. some charities will collect. -
Brilliant! well done all !

They are retaining the live music, And I hear continuing the tradition of the Comedy club. I read that the new owners admit to not knowing a great deal about the comedy circit so they are looking to recruit someone to run that side of it and then the comedy will be re-instated.

Thanks for your sympathy. I do wear comfy shoes However due to lower back and hip problems (I'm In my mid 50's) I still get aches and pains after standing all day. The point I was trying to make really was-sexism aside. If someone has a sedentary job perhaps It would be good manners to perhaps offer a seat to someone who looks like they may need it. Women on heels, people carrying shopping, with kids, older etc etc.

As a commuter on the always packed Overground and Jubilee line I'm always more than a little put out by the fact I very very seldom see a man offering to give up their seat on the train to a woman. On several occasions I've seen men in the priority seats blatently ignoring women that have stood near them wearing 'Baby on board' badges only giving up their seat if asked. As a female shop worker who has to stand for approx 8 hours a day (staff in stores are not allowed to sit down unless on a break)I really long for just a quick sit down on the journey to and from work. As I am neither elderly or pregnant I do not feel able to ask for a seat just because my legs and feet are killing me...I'm sure I'm not alone. SO I'm going to make a plea....Male commuters IF you have a sedentary job and spend the majority of the day at work sat at a desk PLEASE.....offer your seat to a woman!

We live on the Horniman side of FH, and we can't hear the noise from the South Circular unless perhaps the emergency services go past. We've lived here for almost 5 years and have seen it change for the better. The old HOB pub opposite the station has new owners and sounds like its going to be superb with food cooked on open fires, craft beers, local suppliers and cocktails. It takes me 35mins to get to work in Bond st and about the same to get to Shorditch high st. I've actually never lived in a friendlier place theres a really good community feel. And also we do have FOREST HILL FASHION WEEK AND an upright piano outside the station for anyone to sit and play..and trust me people often do and very well at that!

Agree-The other day I popped into the brickhouse and brought a cappuccino Loaf of bread and a large salad to eat in. A total spend of around ?13. As all the long tables were full of mums and babies I wanted to sit in a square table, only two had spare seats however the other person on each table had Laptop, telephone, notebook etc etc meaning I had the tiniest speace to eat my salad and drink my coffee, no room to spread out the magazine Id brought with me to enjoy over my lunch. one of the laptop workers was drinking a san Pelligrino the other a coffee. It was 1.30pm peak lunch trade. I think its selfish to hog a tabletop to 'work' from when others on their precious lunch break have to squeeze into a cramped space because of it. People working from cafes should be sensitive and avoid peak times. Or perhaps cafes should impose a table time limit like resturants do
