This makes sense I couldn't get any emails on my phone on the 22nd-and delayed texts. Today I still have only one bar of signal.

Well said! And may I add that it is IMPERATIVE that these families are re-housed in the local area. its where their lives are, shops that provide their native food and speak their language. schools doctors, friends places of worship and family. I really understand how important having links to an area is-I grew up in Notting-Hill was born there as was my mother. growing up my grandparents were down the road and I stayed in the area until both my parents passed away and I had no links any more to tie me. These people need the comfort of the familiar.

But In the old place Ive had really superb Sunday roasts and impromptu meals. They've taken a perfectly good pub and made it S**t at a huge cost and long closure. In order to open a hotel? In these days of airbnb I think opening a hotel in an area outside of a major retail or buisiness hub is commercial suicide unless its a 'boutique' or spa hotel offering food by a renowned chef. I'm actually pretty angry tbh-I know its first world problems and all that in the general scheme of things but it was our 'go to' pub on warm evenings and lovely in the winter too. surely the company owning the pub must realise that the general public expect more than just 'MEH' food adiquately cooked? that may be acceptable in Motorway services but elsewhere? just not on!

Are high rise buildings in and around ED safe?
NewWave replied to trinidad's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I believe there is still in many boroughs reticence to house families with young children above around the 8th floor. not so much due to fire risks but because in the event of a power cut mothers with small children would be somewhat marooned without lift access -
As a postscript-if you do read the grenfell action group blog look out for the section about the repeated power-surges within the building leading to smoke pouring out of some peoples light fittings and blowing up and 'frying' their applicences. They were eventually sorted but could it have been a repeat of this in block electrical fault which caused the fridge to explode which some press are saying started the fire? In the blog there are entries from 2013 (The disempowered of Grenfell tower is the title of one of the posts) Stating there was a problem caused by Arcing in the mains supply. this was apparently sorted but a lot can happen in 4 years.

Tough one-to my mind (and I'm no expert) the fault lies with using the curtain wall material with the plastic filling rather than the mineral filling which is obviously less flammable. I grew up in that area in a similar block (Built earlier though) Any fire in our block would have been pretty much contained to the flat or the floor due to all the concrete providing the person who's house was on fire alerted the neighbours ON the floor and closed the door upon leaving-It appears to me the fire spread externally and then in through peoples open windows due to the hot weather. I believe that particular cladding is banned in some countries or states due to its higher flammibility. The problem lies with the fact that the law requires a certain level of fire retardence for things to be deemed safe-the law does not take into account the worst case scenereo which this was. The law needs to be changed so that the worst case scenereo (sorry I cannot spell!) is always treated as the norm in factors of safety of materials in multi-occupancy buildings. I hope this makes sense-this whole affair is very close to my heart having grown up and spent almost 50years living in the Notting Hill area and living in social housing until my 20's when I left home. My Parents saw out their lives in a similar flat a woman in her 80's died in this fire it could have been my mother. My parents block was not 'gentrified' it was not clad to make it socially acceptable for its wealthier neighbours. its still a concrete block and to my eyes more beautiful for it and certainly safer. There had been problems and questions raised about safety in Grenfell for a LONG time. Those who are interested should google Grenfell action group. its a wordpress site which warned about a possible fire disaster in that block during the construction work. Its a tough read but I do encourage people to read it in order to see how poorly managed everything was. ALSO did you know there were several 'gentrified' flats in that block on the higher floors being rented out privately for ?2000 a month?

I'd play music in my garden to blank them out. I also can't stand screeching children but I'd never say anything to the parents because I'm damn sure I too screeched as a kid and to the parents ears it isn't annoying its just what kids do and not worth falling out with them over.

Went there this afternoon for a cheeky G&T with my OH. Abysmal service...about 10 very young members of staff stood around flapping behind the bar but NOT actually serving people (a mention here for the only one who seemed in control and working-a VERY tall young guy with dreads if you spot him stand in the area he's at and you'll get a drink he seemed to be the only one actually spotting customers waiting otherwise..good luck!) finally got served by just asking a guy standing looking gormless staring into space "Hi-can you serve me?" Got the G&T no lemon no straw no nada (contrast to the Alma in CP where it came with slices of cucumber and I got asked what gin I wanted)-I had to ask for a slice of lemon which lead to him bumbling around some more looking alarmed, No question about what gin I wanted either-just clueless. Glanced at menu looked pretty meh-not seasonal at all-Sausage and Mash..today? in 30degree heat! not even gastro pub style just very kind of wetherspoons ?14 for sausage and mash (!) salad niscoise I think was about a tenner. they had Ceaser salad which I don't think Ive seen on a menu since the 80's. In fact the menu looked very dated and most dishes overpriced by a few quid. Sad because I loved that pub! A word to management-and I work in retail in the west end so I do know know about service. GET EXPERIENCED STAFF BEHIND THE BAR-its all well and good having lots of staff but if only one appears to know what he's doing on a busy saturday its not good enough. give them training-its not enough to know how to use use the till-they need to know about how to serve. Gin-what gin? our house gin is...would you like lemon in it? or Lime? Cucumber? etc if you are going to do it do it right. You're more expensive than Wetherspoons but I'd get more informed service there and a lime in my drink

I use either route (whichever comes along > first)to get "uptown" quite a lot between about > 11.00 - 15.00 and neither are ever crowded. I'm talking about peak times I use them between 7.30am-10.30am and 4.30pm-8pm I'm pretty sure they are quieter if you don't need to use them to go to and from work.

I swim about 3 times a week at East Dulwich but do find it very busy. I have only learned to swim relatively recently as a mature swimmer and despite the 'slow lane' being very wide I still often have to stop swimming in order not to crash into people even slower than me! Thats why as a serious swimmer I'm not sure its the best pool for you. My OH travels to Lewisham for that reason and we live on ED/FH borders -
Window Box & Bay Tree Thieves, Dunstans Road
NewWave replied to Dunstans_Jules's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
This isn't a new phenomena whilst living in a raised ground floor flat in Chelsea in the late 80's someone stole my beautiful stone gargoyle (a contradiction in terms I am aware-but he was a griffon really lovely) and a stone window box off of my windowsill overnight. Both were extremely heavy and as it was a raised ground floor with a steep drop to the basement they also put themselves at risk by climbing onto my windowsill over railings on the front steps. Some people are thieving scumbags end of story -
We badly need MORE busses serving central London not less. The overground is always hideously overcrowded and I've noticed the 185 and 176 are pretty full most times of day

Back to the 'Duck egg' unsurprised its closed went there once it was awful. Went back to give them a second chance (any buisiness can have an off day-and though I won't condone it in a large chain or expensive place I tend to give local buisiness the benefit of the doubt) Was again awful with grim cheap cheap cheap sauces.

NewWave replied to sabrina79's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I think its fair that they don't do a swim only membership-Its only a small pool and to be honest I OFTEN find its too busy. HOWEVER-I would say in selected locations with Large or two pools (Like Peckham, Or elephant and castle) a swimming only membership would possibly make sense. Surely you'd be better off just paying to use the pool overtime you go rather than being a member as pool only tickets are cheaper. -

I went today and agree it was unbarably hot-I just about managed to do my cardio but it was really unpleasent. I also pity the poor staff who are there all day in these tempratures. They BADLY need portable air-con units. -

Donations outside charity shops
NewWave replied to siousxiesue's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Its a real bugbear of mine too- I make a point of shouting 'Thief!' or 'Bin-diver!" at people when I see them rooting through things left outside charity shops. Breaks my heart-especially as the shops can't sell things left randomly outside in case a dog has peed on them. Stupid lazy people who dump donations outside when the shop is closed.
