I used to know Jimmy quite well years ago. He used to have a weekly column in the Sunday People where I worked for many years when I was a young buck working as a copytaker. Most Fridays I'd take his copy over the phone and we'd have a little natter afterwards, mostly about music. On occasion he would pop into the office to see everyone and would always stop by my office for a chat. He always had time for other people. For instance he gave up a lot of his free time to work at Stoke Mandeville Hospital as an unpaid porter. He would bring in freebies from his Jim'll Fix It programmes for my colleagues children and even got some of them in the audience for his shows. At the Christmas dinner and dances he would always come and sit with us (workers) instead of the directors or editors and would make sure we had enough to drink, even though he didn't touch alcohol himself. He was quick witted, charm personified and yes, OK a little eccentric but so what I thought he was a lovely man. A real salt of the earth. RIP Sir Jimmy Savile OBE
