  1. No not just you ,lots of properties affected in Barry Rd . Power only just back on . Must have been a big problem to be out from midnight to 2pm . Big thank you to the engineers . Hope their pay reflected call out ,working at night ,plus in pouring rain . Bet it didn't .
  2. Foxhelp and Mens I think you make good points . I think growing up as mixed race is a complex process wherever you are . The parents ( as any parent ) need to feel happy with their environs and support network . Perhaps that's a key point - that the parent should be as happy and secure as any parent can be then there's a better chance of their child/ren dealing with whatever life throws at them . So maybe try less to predict where best to bring up a child and concentrate on factors that will support you as a parent ?At least that's more of a known unknown .
  3. Spot on KK . And quite agree re " some councillors are known for saying things that are completely untrue then deny saying what they said " . That's one of the reasons I like to read their comments/debate/squabbling where they make statements . Though I've learnt the futility of pointing out or trying to persue any reversals ,untruths .I just think the interchange tends to highlight their true colours .
  4. I'm not sure how helpful my view - based on close friend who moved out of London with mixed race children 20 years ago - is but ....she moved for better quality of life ,good schools and also because of concerns that her children would be more exposed to hard line ,aggressive ,urban culture if she stayed in London. Particularly that of negative content from small minority of black ( and white ) groups/"gangs " . I don't know if I've explained that well .and apologise if I've offended people . Anyway the quality of life element was achieved and her boys led and lead physical and active lives . They did experience racism ,I think it's inevitable . I would guess that they benefited socially from being in a rather gentler environment than in London . I would add that the worst racism they experienced seemed to come from the schools and individual teachers and I think this did detrimentally impact on their education .I think London (and other large urban towns ) schools are way more professional and experienced in this respect . My friend moved a long way from London ,south west ,quite Tory/rural . I don't think it's possible to tick all the boxes ,a lot depends on individual circumstances . For what it's worth ,from your description - friends and family in area - if it were me ,I'd go for it and move . Oh ,final thought - employment opportunities are limited where my friend moved to and teenagers etc may be forced to move away for work and parents find slim pickings in job market . I think London does offer more employment opportunities .
  5. As for " squabbling " perhaps we could have a forum vote ? As I've said ,I find it very illuminating .
  6. Apologies James but I don't find that your reply puts my mind at rest and I would prefer specific details . I wonder what standards/yardstick/vision is being used by whoever is assuring you ? Obviously the Harris ED Boys School met statutory regulations but I think it provides a woeful space for teenagers to spend their day . I say "obviously" but nothing surprises me - buildings can be delisted when demolition is required ( Pimlico School ) , planning requirements stating that certain access widths are required can suddenly become flexible ,the Harris Boys School in ED can have the architect suggesting staggered starting times , timetabling tweaks ( off site sports scheduled so that lunch times can be sacrificed ) and segregated dining times all as a means to cope with lack of physical space . So I'm as wary of the Harris track record on what is deemed to be adequate space as I am of trusting that planning regulations can be relied upon . ( ScorchyTalky in Fenchurch St ? ).
  7. Squabbling or debating I find the interchange between the 2 councillors very illuminating . I also find Renata's posts include more detail and fact . " My most major concern over this, is, whether building a whole new primary school on this site, would be at detriment to the current school and its pupils, current and future. If a school was built here, would Harris Primary, Boys and Girls schools form a through 4-18 Academy with automatic entry to secondary, if so what impact would this have on other residents in the area ? " - Renata I share your concerns . James you've been asked twice for more specific details about where on the Waveney site the primary school would be built ? Do you know ? Can you enlighten us ?
  8. Funny isn't it that these studies are so often needed to confirm what we already know ? Guess scientific rigour v. anecdotal ,but can be trying .
  9. Interesting piece on World Service this am ,basically acknowledging how hard it is to get medicine into small children . Quote this study ( though I think any mother knows already ) http://adc.bmj.com/content/98/9/725.full?sid=8c355f74-e26f-473b-81a6-fdddc3091708 that liquid is not easier . ( as a mother ,child long past infancy but I now have various swallowing issues of my own and totally agree with idea of mini pills ,especially with dollop of custard/fromage frais/greek yoghurt as easier than disgusting syrups 0
  10. Is the old uniform shop Wolfe and Scott ? still on Grove Vale ? Opposite Blackbird Bakery ?
  11. Lowlander give NickT a break . Just because some motorists are irresponsible/bad drivers it doesn't follow that all cyclists are beyond reproach and can cause no harm . And I'm a car driver and life long cyclist .
  12. What myname said makes a lot of sense to me .Well said .
  13. I have trouble with frozen shoulders . Having been failed by Forest Hill Rd practice with first one I used someone privately when the second one kicked off . She's excellent and can do home visits . Can PM you details if you like .
  14. Thanks EDAus ,that's good to know . Think I'm overthinking things !
  15. Is this Forest Hill Rd practice ? ( I recognise both issues and have had experience of unnacceptable delays for physio )
  16. has anyone any experience of dropping food off at Pecan food bank in Peckham . I'm slightly put off by need to phone first - soory if that sounds churlish ,I have my reasons .
  17. treehugger I doubt the trees have been damaged but the question I want answered is why were they pollarded in the summer when they were in full leaf ?
  18. It seems odd that we haven't had them yet . Very odd . I'm always very aware of them as I was first conscious of them about 10 days after my son was born ... so July 10th .And amazed at how regular their appearance was . They are late this year . ( pointless and boring post I know ...blame it on the heat ! )
  19. Mmm adult red Trek bike stolen from rear garden barry rd last night . Bike was locked to wheel barrow - bolt cutters used . Access to back garden jemmied .
  20. Looking at the suspended parking bays in Highshore Rd it looks like major works are imminent for the 4 mature sycamores at the edge of Highshore school's playground . I'm going to cry .
  21. Front bays were traditionally built without foundations . Removing a tree may or may not help with a bay subsiding . Underpinning the bay would ,but I guess if you avoid this and shift the cost of tackling the problem away from the insurance company and house owner ,that's a result in some people's eyes .
  22. Sorry ,so good I posted twice .
  23. That's lovely John . Thanks for posting .
  24. Thanks ,I'll give them a ring . Sorry ,that would have been obvious thing to do in first place - I'm a bit muzzy headed at present !
