At most locations there is more than one self-service ticket machine and these are regularly maintained so it would be unusual for there to be no self-service ticket machines available for you to use. At stations where there is only one self-service machine there is usually a further machine called a Permit to Travel. This is normally located near the station entrance/exit or beside other self-service machines. You should insert the maximum number of coins you have with you in the Permit to Travel machine, up to the value of your journey. Press the button and you will be issued with a permit to travel. This permit must be exchanged for a valid ticket at your first opportunity, be that on the train or at your destination and in any case within two hours. You will be given credit for the amount you paid for the permit when you exchange it for a valid ticket.     I was able to reproduce your problem by deleting the eastdulwichforum.co.uk phorum_session_v5 cookie from my computer. I think its absence is the most likely cause. It might have happened if your browser configurations were recently changed, eg not to accept cookies, or to delete them at the end of each internet conection. Or it could have come to the end of its one-month life and got deleted automatically. But in that case I'd expect your situation to have beeen back to normal after your next login. If you do want to actually check cookies and settings, you can probably do so via a Privacy menu item within Preferences or Options somewhere in your browser main menus. I'm incidentally curious, about why people want to be always logged in. I tend to do so only when I want to post or to access PMs, and then I logout again.

  5. I'm doubtful that they're doing anything actionable. They don't seem to be engaged in the "selling or exposing or offering for sale of any article", which could bring them within the Street Trading provisions of the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1982, http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1982/30/schedule/4 if Southwark have adopted them. Nor do they seem to fall within the nuisance parking provisions of the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005, http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2005/16/part/2/crossheading/nuisance-parking-offences, which stops businesses placing cars for _sale_ on the highway within 500 metres of each other. I doubt Zipcar are doing either. Are there any other possibilities?   6. If gm99 is correct about a variation in operating model, the cars that are not in dedicated bays would presumably show up on maps like this one: http://www.zipcar.co.uk/car-hire-london? If they do, you might want to ask Southwark whether their use of non-dedicated parts of the road is in breach of their contract with the council.

  8. I find being anxious to find something in a hurry is usually not a good state in which to search efficiently. But if there's a high probability that it it 'must' be in the house, more searching, maybe following Applesdpider's suggestion still seems to me the possibly least costly strategy. Does she have any idea of when and why she last accessed it? Don't push her for an instant response if she's already stressed. But if she can put the question at the back of her mind, perhaps something may pop up spontaneously from the depths in the next day or two.

    Have they not made their way to the light of a window? I think they'd then be happy to exit if you open it. If you only have windows that partially open you'll have to be very patient though, given the smallness of their brains.

  17. A few weeks ago I saved four plastic punnets of supermarket plums from perdition, a couple of hours before the end of their best-before-end day. They were still bone hard. Two of them I left in a sunny position, and the other two I put in the fridge. A week or two later the ones left out were still hard, but the ones in the fridge were soft and juicy and ready for eating. My best guess is that the ones in the fridge benefitted from the ripening effect of some ethylene in there, which might have come from some apples or pears or maybe a half-eaten banana. So I'm now experimenting with another punnetful, bought on 22 May. As of yesterday, left in the sunny place, they were still hard. So I added a couple of prunes and wrapped them all in a plastic bag. More news later. I hope I haven't offended or traumatised them.
