Little stroll down Dulwich Park after a house move
ianr replied to Andrewsharpes's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Elephant Removals Posted by Andrewsharpes 19 October, 2014 03:50 Hello, Sharing my experience with Elephant Removals, I was told by friends and work colleague to try this company as I was not quiet sure where can I find a reliable company. Since I was recommended I knew I was in good hands. They packed and moved my entire content from one end of London to another. I was well pleased with the guys in the office and on field. Brilliant service, good price and most definite friendly. Now I am a new resident in ED. -

Anyone else hear loud 'bomb-dropping' sound at night?
ianr replied to Ronnijade's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I agree with Hertburs on both points. The BaE 146 (later, Avro RJ100) suggestions seem very plausible. Some google searching for BAe146 flaps sounds shows that it's long been a talked-about phenomenon. One example is at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNZ92B7QsOA. A sound snippet from it is attached. I think it may be just the external manifestation of the maybe even scarier sound within the plane when the flap movement is actuated. -
Are you satisfied that it affects all data paths/ Are, for example, this forum and http://www.bbc.co.uk equally affected. What does http://www.speedtest.net/ say about your speeds? Are you on ADSL? I have noticed on occasion that, on first booting my modem, it syncs to the exchange at 2 Mb/s rather than the expected 9 Mb/s or so. If that happens I simply restart it, which usually resolves it.

And there's this mystery cat recently appeared in your household ...?

London City Airport is very unlikely: their permitted operating hours end at 22:30. https://www.londoncityairport.com/aboutandcorporate/page/noiseandtrackkeepingsystem https://www.acl-uk.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/LCY-S17-Capacity-Declaration.pdf. I guess a Heathrow private or cargo flight is the most likely candidate. Or an alien craft. -

The regulations give them deemed consent for a limited period, just like standard estate agent signs. Classs 3(D). Dovedale/Forest Hill Rd Talking Cat

Can you record this prodigy for us? -
Me too. There's plenty of guidance on the net on how to do it. Pound shops also have sets of small screwdrivers if you need one to to remove screws from the case or the cell mounting. You can also get very cheap watch back remover tools via aliexpress. I only needed one for a more expensive waterproof watch. In most cases a firm penknife blade or similar was enough. Some watches may have or recommend silver oxide cells (type name begins with an 'S'). These are a little bit more expensive. Keeping the cells in the fridge helps their shelf life.

"What if the ticket office is closed, or the station does not have a ticket office and the automatic self-service machines are out of order? At most locations there is more than one self-service ticket machine and these are regularly maintained so it would be unusual for there to be no self-service ticket machines available for you to use. At stations where there is only one self-service machine there is usually a further machine called a Permit to Travel. This is normally located near the station entrance/exit or beside other self-service machines. You should insert the maximum number of coins you have with you in the Permit to Travel machine, up to the value of your journey. Press the button and you will be issued with a permit to travel. This permit must be exchanged for a valid ticket at your first opportunity, be that on the train or at your destination and in any case within two hours. You will be given credit for the amount you paid for the permit when you exchange it for a valid ticket. If the ticket office is closed or not available and self service ticket machines or the Permit to Travel machines are not working then you will not be charged a Penalty Fare." - Southern Penalty Fares leaflet http://www.southernrailway.com/download/17308.2/penalty-fare-leaflet-december-2011/ (284kB).

Phantom automatic public convenience - Lordship Lane
ianr replied to edhistory's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
There was a previous valuation on 1 April 2010. -
I was able to reproduce your problem by deleting the eastdulwichforum.co.uk phorum_session_v5 cookie from my computer. I think its absence is the most likely cause. It might have happened if your browser configurations were recently changed, eg not to accept cookies, or to delete them at the end of each internet conection. Or it could have come to the end of its one-month life and got deleted automatically. But in that case I'd expect your situation to have beeen back to normal after your next login. If you do want to actually check cookies and settings, you can probably do so via a Privacy menu item within Preferences or Options somewhere in your browser main menus. I'm incidentally curious, about why people want to be always logged in. I tend to do so only when I want to post or to access PMs, and then I logout again.

Perhaps better not to give it a name then.

I'm doubtful that they're doing anything actionable. They don't seem to be engaged in the "selling or exposing or offering for sale of any article", which could bring them within the Street Trading provisions of the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1982, http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1982/30/schedule/4 if Southwark have adopted them. Nor do they seem to fall within the nuisance parking provisions of the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005, http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2005/16/part/2/crossheading/nuisance-parking-offences, which stops businesses placing cars for _sale_ on the highway within 500 metres of each other. I doubt Zipcar are doing either. Are there any other possibilities? Their accounts for the year to 31/12/2015, btw, declared an operating loss of ?3.5 million. https://beta.companieshouse.gov.uk/company/04525217/filing-history

If gm99 is correct about a variation in operating model, the cars that are not in dedicated bays would presumably show up on maps like this one: http://www.zipcar.co.uk/car-hire-london? If they do, you might want to ask Southwark whether their use of non-dedicated parts of the road is in breach of their contract with the council.

Rye Lane cycle lane confusion and danger
ianr replied to Huggers's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The Southwark public notice announcing the Rye Lane plans is available at http://www.2.southwark.gov.uk/downloads/download/3116/frequently_requested_traffic_orders. The actual TMOs are attached to the response to https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/en/request/traffic_management_orderplan_for. Or is the actual cycleway later than 2010? -
I find being anxious to find something in a hurry is usually not a good state in which to search efficiently. But if there's a high probability that it it 'must' be in the house, more searching, maybe following Applesdpider's suggestion still seems to me the possibly least costly strategy. Does she have any idea of when and why she last accessed it? Don't push her for an instant response if she's already stressed. But if she can put the question at the back of her mind, perhaps something may pop up spontaneously from the depths in the next day or two.

Have they not made their way to the light of a window? I think they'd then be happy to exit if you open it. If you only have windows that partially open you'll have to be very patient though, given the smallness of their brains.
