  1. Cows and peacocks, yes, but I don't think there were ever deer there.
  2. I've exhausted the carto-bibliogrphic references I have at home and those I can find on the internet. The "Diwhurst" maps (and their pre-copyright "analogues") certainly have a very interesting and complicated history. However none of those catalogued are at a large enough scale to have a resolution down to a pond on or near Goose Green. All the carto-bibliographies have caveats about incomplete coverage. If there is a large scale "Diwhurst" map at the Local Studies Library it needs to be inspected with Mark I eye-ball. Does anyone work in The Borough who could pop in one lunch-time?
  3. Another Goose Green pond(s) mystery then. Why was Union Road so-named?
  4. And there was me thinking the Union Road was so-named because it joined Dulwich to West Dulwich.
  5. I seem to remember that Riley's had their factory South of the railway line just West of Dulwich Hospital. Makers of horse-riding helmets, motor-cycle helmets (old-style), and industrial protection helmts. Those were the days of leather and cork. This thread reminds me of the difficulties of claiming compensation from the War Damage Commission. Inadequate compensation and material shortages meant that damaged houses next to bomb-sites were "repaired" in a very ad hoc fashion and then the repairs were skillfully hidden. Probably in the hope that proper repairs could be done later in better times. In the old days when East Dulwich had proper estate agents such as White Dent they had this local knowledge of which properties were affected in this way. I suspect that now this local knowledge is lost house surveys may well not discover this damage.
  6. Children and geography! We used to get out our old bikes and explore. When we got home we drew maps from memory of where we had been. I well remember regular visits to the West Dulwich Police Station wooden notice-board to check the Colorado beetle poster. Never did find one that we could report to the police. The Belair council-run cafe/canteen was more useful to park-goers than the exclusive eatery that's there now.
  7. > Half of the station is east of the railway line. Twould be interesting if it were no so.
  8. Might try checking their tax discs too. You could strike lucky.
  9. Me too. The fairy lights are on again. Did this come with the planning permission?
  10. > Beauberry House is definitely W Dul - it is 2 minutes from the station. Belair is East of the railway line.
  11. Work seems to be underway for our new pie 'n' mash shop.
  12. The agent's sign is looking battered. The rent is cheap. Perhaps we've seen the end to new retail openings that are not already commited for a little while.
  13. I've not done a recount recently, but I'm interested to see which is the first to fall with the opening of Foxtons. Or could it be Foxtons have got their timing wrong and will be the first to fall?
  14. I'm not very keen on modern architecture, but I must say I'm very impressed with the new-build at the North of Piermont Green.
  15. Mrs Robinson's premises was once a pram/toy shop. In the 1950s Hornby Dublo and Tri-Ang produced factory-built display model railway layouts for their retailers. Sometimes these were controlled by penny-in-the-slot devices. This East Dulwich model railway was unusual as it was home-made.
  16. I'm interested in restoring the East Dulwich War Memorial, but living flesh and blood is more important than a lump of stone. Last year I couldn't find a place to buy my Poppy in the New East Dulwich. I got mine at London Bridge.
  17. That's a 23% discount. Is this a measure of East Dulwich property over-valuation?
  18. The upside of East Dulwich negative equity might be a more stable community as people stay in the area a little longer rather than making a profit on their property and moving on.
  19. A first step for East Dulwich might be a greater attendance at our War Memorial on 11 November this year.
  20. > They are all still essentially solvent because those mortgage loans still have the same asset value. Until the market value of the mortgaged properties falls below the amount of the mortgage loans?
  21. I've not thought of this before in the way that downsouth has written. If you pay a ?200k premium for a three bedroom terrace in East Dulwich what exactly are you getting for the ?200k? Yes there are some slightly up-market shops, bars, and restaurants - but are they worth that ?200k? What else in East Dulwich would justify such a large premium? It suggests to me East Dulwich house prices are greatly over-inflated.
  22. Many years ago I saw the original Chatham Chest and reflected that nothing much has changed in 400 years.
  23. I've not heard of Kerry Katona or Lee Ryan or Blue. Are they important? Do White Stuff have customers? Always looks empty when I walk past.
  24. This should have been covered in the transport impact statement that went with the change in use planning application?
  25. Thank you for reporting your continuing research, Dannyboy. This makes me wonder if the London Artists' Rifles was part of the London Regiment or the Middlesex Regiment (or neither).
