  1. Lets take the shops along Dulwich Plough where Sainsbury's Local is. They include the Post Office/Convenience Store, Off Licence, the cafe which used to be Segars, Red Apple Newsagents, Vals Grocery, Chemist, Costcutter and Badger Bakery. While initially, takings are down, not one of those shops along that section of LL have closed and in any case, I prefer the service I get from Red Apple than Sainsburys.
  2. 7-11 has changed hands twice since Sainsburys opened, as Budgens Express and now Londis, yet still offers the same niche of 24/7 opening. Sainsburys also tried 24 hour opening on Mondays to Saturdays, however they now close at midnight, so they don't get it their own way as the footfall is on LL and not at DKH at that time of night.

And I imagine they were the shops that didn't adapt to competition? How does Chener Books manage to survive on LL despite charging RRP? It has a niche in the market. As much as I haven't liked some elements of gentrification in ED, Sainsburys helped in some way to transform LL into a niche shopping area. Compare that to LL in 1990 and it's a massive improvement.
  4. Both the weekly and monthly are paper season tickets. If you can get the annual season to London Terminals, you get a gold card which you can put the number on your Oyster card for discounted travel using Pay as you go outside peak hours. Full prices for season tickets are below. Days/Months Price 7 Days ?22.70 1 Month ?87.20 3 Months ?261.60 6 Months ?523.10 12 Months ?908.00
  5. Those of us who were around twenty years ago were concerned about Sainsburys opening on Dog Kennel Hill, which would affect the businesses along Grove Vale and LL. What happened after it opened? We saw the start of the more niche businesses opening on LL, while the shops on Grove Vale such as the DIY store and the convenience store on DKH are STILL open!
  6. I can get the BT-FON wi-fi signal inside my flat. According to BT's wi-fi hotspot finder, the nearest base station is in Dulwich Village.

  8. Honor Oak Park is in Zone 3. If you decide to use a Zone 1-2 travelcard, you'll need at least ?3.20 per day to cover your journey between Brockley and Honor Oak Park using Oyster. If you're only commuting between London Bridge and Honor Oak Park not using buses or the tube afterwards, you can buy a 7 day paper season ticket for ?22.70. You will need a photocard though, this can be easily done by going to the ticket office with a passport sized photograph which they'll put on for you. Another option is to buy a Zone 1-2 travelcard and commute to Peckham Rye instead, then use the 63 or 363 which your travelcard will cover.
  9. Did anyone see a little white dog running havoc at the Dulwich Plough junction at 3pm this afternoon? Various locals tried to catch the dog as he ran into oncoming traffic in LL. I hope he was caught ok?
  10. Virgin/EE reception has always been rubbish at the Lordship Lane Estate end of LL, then it improved when we could use the Orange transmitter. EE then turned off the reliable Orange 2G transmitter and once again the signal is dire.
  11. As an aside, you'll need to retune your Freeview boxes or tv's today to regain Film4 as I found out this morning.
  12. The closure and if a replacement isn't found will put added pressure on the excellent 369 LL PO. I've used the PO's at retail outlets, such as the one inside WHSmith at Forest Hill and have found it better than the main PO here which is always busy as mentioned no thanks to closing the Melbourne Road sub PO. Those inside WHSmith stores also stay open until 5.30pm on Saturdays. As long as the PO has adequate space in another retail outlet, this is preferable than not having the service at all.
  13. We may have seen more progress if the DfT devolved Southeastern's metro rail services to TfL as planned, instead Tory MPs and Kent County Council (maj. Con) put pressure on them not to give it to them based on unsubstantiated fears about lack of paths for services within the county.
  14. Wait for a 197 at Peckham Bus Station where a bus can say 'due' for a long period without leaving the bus station.

JohnL Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Don't they talk to each other / to base > > '10-4 10-4 I'm full now - be prepared to take the > extra' The controller at Norwood Garage where the 176 is based can see where each bus is on a PC thanks to the GPS tracking system on each bus. This has enabled controllers to keep track of buses to the nearest bus stop. The same system enables the voice announcements (One-Seven-Six to Pennnge!) on the bus, which is called iBus.
  16. There's Corrie actress Kate Ford, but she's sadly not on Twitter, so you'd have to contact via ITV and Nicola McAuliffe, but I can't find an agent or Twitter for her.
  17. I find various women's media more objectionable to women than any of the crap published in the lads mags. Diet fads, how to get the perfect man etc play to a stereotype that women supposedly have to conform to. An average lad mag will have a curvy model with admittedly a dire light hearted interview. The feminist movement is quite right to fight for equality in the workplace and shouldn't have to face abuse from male colleagues, yet I doubt your average Sun or Nuts reader is to blame for that.
  18. Apparently the reason why the library is so busy currently as we're in exam season with students revising, however that should quieten down as the summer holidays get closer. The library should return to normal as staff and customers get used to the new technology.
  19. I use a Three dongle and get through 14GB a month. As mentioned, you can tether with some phone contracts, but check your contract before doing it as they can cap your speed or not allow it at all. Three allow tethering with a mobile phone on their One Plan contract or you can have a Mobile Broadband contract which allows 15GB per month for ?15.99. You can just have broadband from Virgin Media only. They'll try their best to coax you in keeping the digital TV and phone though.
  20. My mother has friends who live at the Underhill Road end of Overhill Road. They easily have one of the nicest houses in the whole of ED. Less than 5 mins walk to the P13 bus stop and the same for the 176, 185 and 197 buses to Forest Hill, it's not bad at all, but the steep hill itself would be an issue for those who can't get out far.

When Thameslink's upgrade is complete, London Bridge is going to be even more busier than it is now, with more services coming in. With this in mind, the track has to be separate so that Thameslink and Southeastern can operate independently of each other. Currently, Thameslink (FCC) and Southeastern services to Charing Cross all share Platform 6. This is no longer practical as this causes services to be delayed as all services have to queue up for platform space. It is possible for services to be diverted into Platform 5, but then this causes disruption for Kent bound services from Charing Cross and Thameslink services to Brighton.
  22. I think I can answer my own question about the security guard as library staff no longer work in the study room. The area where the staff member would supervise is now used for additional study space.
  23. I've finally visited the library today. The area for the self service machines is excellent and staff were on hand to assist customers with using the machines, in particular with those who were borrowing CD's and DVD's. It's already been mentioned that the downstairs photocopier is too close to the books, so is a very cramped area to look at books while the upstairs 'quiet' study area is too popular and was hot, but there were spare PC's to use. The upstairs security guard was busy hovering around outside the study area, I have no idea why Southwark are now spending money on it when they didn't require it before. I needed some help using the new scanner/photocopier and staff were happy to assist and also let me borrow a USB stick to save my document to transfer to a PC.
  24. Orange 2G has been weak to non-existent at the Grove end of LL for over a week now. I can still get the former T-Mobile signal, but it's not the strongest signal.
  25. I didn't know that. Did the boundary change with the Lewisham borough creation which moved the boundary to Wood Vale?
