Not many people appear to know this but Parmesan isn't vegetarian.
wee quinnie replied to wee quinnie's topic in The Lounge
Yes I am talking about the animal rennet, and I am aware of the situations with Gorgonzola and Grana Padano. The reason that I am bringing it up, is that parmesan seems to be a particularly popular ingredient in so-called vegetarian menus right now - esp. as risotto seems to be the offering of choice. -
I have recently discovered that there is no such thing as Vegetarian parmesan, yet everywhere I look, I find recipe books with vegetarian recipes including parmesan, and restaurants/bars serving "veggie options" containing parmesan. It's really bugging me - I realise of course that the reasons for becoming vegetarian are varied, but I really would have thought most vegetarians would want to avoid an ingredient that necessitated the death of an animal. Anyway, just thought that I'd take this opportunity if you're thinking of whipping up your signature risotto with parmesan for your veggie chums. Oh, and if you're looking for a substitute the only parmesan style cheese approved by the vegetarian society in the UK is "Not just a pasta cheese" by Bookhams (formerly known as Twineham Grange cheese).

Update! I misunderstood about the non-EU bizzo. I have managed to print out Mr WQ's boarding card, but GET THIS! I still have to get the boarding pass stamped at a check in desk EVEN THOUGH THIS FLIGHT BEGINS AND ENDS IN THE UK!! I am really raging with myself for relenting on my cardinal rule... never to travel with Ryanair, even if alternatives add hours to the journey. I am still none the wiser as to whether or not you can opt out of the online check in.

Realised I was dragging Mick's thread about the Gowlett out of focus. I dispute Mr Sean MG's remark that vegetarian gastronomy is an oxymoron. One exmaple (I am sure there are many more): http://www.cafeparadiso.ie/reviews

Also, they have the only UK branch of INGLOT cosmetics which I am dying to visit.

No disrespect intended but no Perhaps this is because vegetarians are so poorly provided for in the first place. BTW - have you been to Cafe Paradiso in Cork?

Hi all, apologies for asking these boring questions, but I can't find any enlightenment on the Ryanair site. (Oh and in case you're wondering, yes I am regretting making the bookings now). Whenever you book through Ryanair is there actually a way of opting out of the online check in procsss? Secondly, I went to do the actual check in bit yesterday where I was informed that I could not check in Mr WQ online as he is not a European passport holder. Now given that I have already paid for online check in, does this mean that I am still going to have to stump up at the airport to get him a boarding pass?

Much as I love the pizzas down in the Gowlett, the last time I went it was lucky sevens night, which was really loud and off putting. PS - East Dulwich is definitely not a gastronomy hotspot if you're a vegetarian.

One thing that I heard on telly in Australia which really amused me was some telly designer suggesting that people could use pictures to "decor" their homes! ha ha!!! -

Don't know if anyones noticed - but there seems to be a slightly strange way of saying "thank you" from shop workers in ED. Everyone in Pretty Traditional seems to do it - it sounds a bit like a sneeze - the "than" bit is really drawn out, and then the "k you" bit is really brief. Fashion eh? -

I don't know if anyone else has noticed the way that fashion people use the singular when they should be using the plural eg. "...a red lip.." "...a black pant..." Dreadful! -

Overloaded with election-related literature?

Been a bit weird not actually getting any blurb from the LDs yesterday and today.... Oh and I had something through the door from them on polling day, AND they knocked on my door twice to see if i'd voted yet. Blimmin' nora. -
So who is it - who is on Come Dine With Me?
wee quinnie replied to SeanMacGabhann's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Indiana - I seem to remember reading about this somewhere, and it was mentioned that RL borrowed a friend's flat for his stint. I don't think it was in ED. -
You could try checking the odds at Psddy Power.

I can't understand why microwaves are being dissed. For sure, you probably wouldn't want to cook your entire dinner in it. but I find them mighty useful for: 1. Cooking potatoes quickly which I can then chuck into what I am cooking on the stove. (Saves about 15 mins cooking time). 2. Reheating cups of tea/coffee that have gone cold. 3. Drinking chocolate. (Saves washing up the saucepan). 4. Quickest/best way to melt choclate for cooking (According to Nigella). 5. Reheating leftover cooked rice. Etc etc
