Next Forum Drinks - Friday 1st October at The Actress

Recommended Posts

Holy batman ? Mikey P and me standing shoulder to shoulder with pitchforks! Who woulda thunk it!?

It?s not looking like a huge turnout for Friday is it ? but I suspect the place will be fairly rammed anyway. Unlike some venues, newcomers may not be able to spot an obvious gathering

I want to go for many reasons

- making an effort to go to all forum drinks and make nice and sociable with the neighbours

- haven't been to the Actress yet

- celebrating Friday night

BUT

I need to get my roots done and my hairdresser can only fit me in late on Friday. Life's a bitch. So I'll be there at some stage, even if I still have a towel on my head.

I went along to the Actress, was a good night and nice to see some familiar faces again.

The tumblers were good. No clowns or acrobats tho ;)

It was a good night out, thank you for organising it Georgia! Smaller turnout, but that meant I wasn't trying to talk to too many people. The Actress was quite busy, good for them, bad for us as nowhere to get an area.

Normally they are the first Friday of the month. No hints as to where the next one will be yet.

To be honest I am not sure if there will / should be another. I said before that they are not working having them every month anymore. I am also feeling that people expect me to be at all of them, as if I am hosting a party, and that isn't realistic.

So...I would like a break(possibly a permanent one)from organising them please!

Can I be the first in thanking you Georgia for all the effort you've put in for the drinks over the past three and half years. I know I don't go to them anymore but when I did I met some very nice people some of whom have become good friends. So thanks Georgia. Take a bow young lady.

    • But all those examples sell a wide variety of things,  and mostly they are well spread out along Lordship Lane. These two shops both sell one very specific thing, albeit in different flavours, and are just across the road from each other. I don't think you can compare the distribution of shops in Roman times to the distribution of shops in Lordship Lane in the twenty first century. Well, you can, but it doesn't feel very appropriate. Haa anybody asked the first shop how they feel? Are they happy about the "healthy competition" ?
    • ED is included in the 17 August closure set (or just possibly 15 August, depending on which part of the page you trust more) listed at https://metro.co.uk/2025/07/25/full-list-25-poundland-stores-confirmed-close-august-23753048/. Here incidentally are some snippets from their annual reports, at https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/02495645/filing-history. 2022: " during the period we opened 41 stores and closed 43 loss-making/under-performing stores.  At the period-end we were trading from 821 stores in the UK, IoM and ROI. ... "We renogotiated 82 leases in the year, saving on average 45% versus the prior lease agreement..." 2023: "We also continued to improve our market footprint through sourcing better store locations, opening 53 and closing 51 stores during the year." 2024:  "The ex-Wilco stores acquired in the prior year have formed a core part of this strategy to expand our store network.  We favour quality over quantity and during the period we opened 84 stores and closed 71 loss-making/under-performing ones."
    • Ha! After I posted this, I thought of lots more examples. Screwfix and the hardware store? Mrs Robinson and Jumping Bean? Chemists, plant shops, hairdressers...  the list goes on... it's good to have healthy competition  Ooooh! Two cheese shops
    • You've got a point.  Thinking Leyland and Screwfix too but this felt different.
