In my experience a lot of Bus Drivers in London could do with an anger management course, an etiquette course and a replacement for the dessicated shell that used to be their heart. I've never bought their constant refrain of "Its the customers what is miserable and rude". When I've seen rudeness directed at TfL staff its usually in response to having their perfectly reasonable enquiries met with either offhand indifference or caustic remarks. Along with a lot of Londons public service ills this can be put down to a simple lack of communication. I say sue the buggers... ;-)

Seem to have improved when trying to get rebates on being charged a ?4 Oystercard fare. First time I tried the lady in Canary Wharf just shouted 'You must touch in and out' ad nauseum - seemed not to realise that some of the equipment might be dodgy. Recently in Canada Water the guy just refunded the ?4 - no questions asked.

I'm sure some machines struggle when you have ?2 or less on the card (They take off ?4 then refund the difference on touching out it seems).

Off topic, but if you top up your Oyster card automatically online, you can get a printout of your journey history, and you can easily check whether you have been overcharged.

On topic, I have had a few bad bus experiences recently (176 driver completely missed out the stop at the Elephant, so a load of people waiting to get off had to walk all the way back from the other side of the roundabout; 40 driver of half-empty bus failed to stop when hailed at request stop).

I got the reg number and the run number (on the side of the bus) of the 176, but when I tried to report it via the tfl website, I got a "this email address is not known" message back!

Would it be too cynical to suppose that tfl is trying to minimise the number of complaints it has to a) deal with b) publicise statistics of?

I just couldn't be bothered to pursue it any further :-S

I was on that bus, and immediately after the sharp braking a black car shot down the nearest side road (Ondine or Oglander), it looked as though it had turned right across the path of the bus. Sorry about your poorly neck but I think on this occasion stamping on the brakes might have been justified.

    • It was a response to long and at times clearly unhelpful, not to say insulting, comments including ones implying that the initial report was madey-uppy.
    • Seems to be lot of words to say parents should be supervising their children properly and adults should not be cycling on pavements.
    • There are two causes for this problem   The first is that modern safety requirements for cars (to protect pedestrians and cyclists in collisions) mean huge amounts of excess spacing in crumple zones to provide a cushion on impact. For example, in the past a lot of pedestrians suffered catastrophic head injuries when they ran in front of a car, because the bonnet was close to the engine block, so their heads bent the bonnet into the solid immovable engine and their heads cam off worse. To mitigate that there is now a huge amount of flex and space so that the head is cushioned from the engine. Naturally, the rest of the body work and car frame has had to increase to accommodate this safety measure.   The second issue is electrification.   Electric cars are massive because they have to carry huge batteries around to make them work. Massive amounts of space and height is given over to batteries in electric cars. The new electric Renault 5 (described as a "compact" hatch back) is nearly 4 metres long 2 metres wide.    That makes it longer and wider than the original Range Rover.
    • Pretentious status vehicles.  Last year I was trying to drive down my own street but, being in a little, inferior car, was expected to make way for a stream of SUVs / Chelsea tractors as they barged along beside me. After what felt like an age, I saw a window of opportunity, but was beaten to it by yet another tank. By this stage I was irate (I hate the things) and having a full on shouting match with myself behind the wheel.  A Tesla in the oncoming queue pulled in, flashed and courteously allowed me to take my moment. The Tesla's windows were tinted, but not so much that I wasn't able to make out the driver, as I passed him. I'd recognise that mega-watt smile anywhere. It was Peter Crouch, laughing and giving me the thumbs up, clearly entertained by my tantrum.
