If you're offered cashback in Somerfield - make sure they give you the cash.

Luckily I realised yesterday while I was still at the till.

Genuine error? I don't know. But the assistant was doing a lot of merry talking whilst I was about to leave with my shopping - to distract me from the fact he hadn't given me my cash? I don't know.

I'd only just started using my card in there again, too :-S

I could tell people to watch out when paying money in the bank also. Genuine errors do happen!

I once paid a cheque in for ?600 (in East Dulwich, but I won't name and shame the bank), only to notice when checking my account that only ?300 had be credited. It pays to get a receipt for everything! Fortunately for me, this was the case, although for 'cashback', this may be harder to prove.

The fact that Sue felt it necessary to make a thread about it says something to me - and the title of the thread It reads like a warning, no? The mention of 'merry talking' as artifice makes the whole incident sound slightly sinister and dishonest, in my very humble opinion.

Charitably I'll interpret this as general advice while using Somerfield as an example as opposed to a specific insinuation, I think that's for the best.

All I'm saying is that an assistant in Somerfield did not give me my cashback despite having asked me if I wanted cashback a very short time before.

And yes - I wasn't sure it was a genuine error as I don't usually find shop assistants making conversation after I've packed my bags and am about to go, when there is a queue waiting. That doesn't make it an "accusation".

This has never happened to me before in years of getting cashback in shops. You used to have to initial the slip, does that not happen any more?

I have started a thread about it because there appear to have been other problems relating to cards (cloning) where a common factor seems to have been that cards were used in Somerfield.

I thought I had carefully worded the post. Just saying, if you ask for cashback make sure they don't forget to give it to you, that's all. I thought it was worth starting a thread, sorry if others don't think so. If you don't realise you've not been given the cash till you've left the shop, it's too late, isn't it?

Edited to change some of what I'd written and also to say - it was a man who served me, not a woman as assumed above :)

i'm with Sue (not literally!), but really, give the post a chance, perhaps someone may have posted on the merits of serving on a till and we'd all be a little wiser.. as it is uve probably just pee'd off each other and got nowhere...

worked on a till? any takers??

(eduited to say oh dear, that was not a pun but an unfortunate last turn of phrase..)

if you,re sooooooo concerned why not stick your head back into somerfield and have a word with the manager.(6)(6)

Just to point out, it's not too late once you've left the shop as the tills have to balance. I did exactly that at Sainsbury's and it wasn't until I got home that I realised I had forgotten the cash. I got the money after phoning the shop. Bizarrely, I had to describe my shoes, presumably they had a camera trained on the till and could see my feet.

Because then that really would be making an accusation, wouldn't it?

I'd rather give someone the benefit of the doubt - but I'm also suggesting people be aware of my experience.

Last week I had my card out in Somerfield ready to pay, and a complete stranger came up to me and asked me if I was aware that many people in East Dulwich had apparently had cards cloned after shopping there.

As it happened I knew that (mine was one of them) but if I hadn't known, I'd have been grateful to her for telling me.

What's the point of a forum if you can't share things with other people which might be helpful?

And now I have to go and work, I have a big day/evening at work tomorrow, and I won't be able to post again on this thread until very late tomorrow or Wednesday, so if I don't respond to your response, please don't read anything into it :)

Yes of course, if it's a genuine error.

If it's not and the till balances, there's no way anything can be proved either way.

And now I really must work :)

I always walk away and forget that I've asked for it. Particularly in pubs. :-S

I've often been chased accross the bar with it. :-$

I had a similar thing years ago and they gave my money back (no shoe proof though!). And I've almost walked off without my cashback more than once through scattiness. I'm sure it's not been the till assistant trying to distract me, I'm just the chatty sort and can distract myself nattering if someone is friendly to me.

Errr - wasn't that rumour started on the EDF - looks like it's come full circle!!

Or was there actual evidence that proves Somerfields is a hotbed of card crime and I just missed it?

St Johns with St Clements have a small hall but not sure if they allow adult parties. Nunhead Green has a newish community centre with a couple of different size halls. Most places seem to charge around £40 ph  with a deposit of £100/200 (returned if no damage or excess cleaning needed.
    • Hello, Recently there have been various comments made on the forum which have resulted in heated discussions being had. I for one, hold up my hand and wanted to personally thank whoever is keeping the forum going.. remember when it was likely to close. We are all adults and should known when it is right to continue or just ignore or if really feel it necessary comment via pm. I have had a long relationship with the forum and have bought, sold, offered advice and in deed made friends on the forum over the years. It is a public forum after all and everyone is entitled to express their opinion and is also free. I am not as tech minded as most but with the season of good will approaching and-knowing in this economic climate how many people are  struggling, I  thought it would be a lovely idea, to perhaps set up a just giving page to raise funds for a local charity who might appreciate a contribution towards their Christmas festivities… On a practical side, might just be to complicated to administer as I am sure all have charities that we support so my other thought was not me, as I am useless but to set up a just giving page and whatever monies are raised, perhaps contribute to the festivities that use to be run by local shops or whatever.. Maybe even use a local church hall and just make it special for perhaps folk that find it difficult to access events or no access for say wheel chair users.. guess really, one is looking for guidance from the church and of course volunteers. Shoot me down if you must or feel the need but this is my view and no, sadly I won’t be around in the months before Christmas but can help remotely.
