ED Picturehouse. Elitest.

Recommended Posts

The new cinema is great and a welcome addition to ED. the prices charged are on a par with all the big chains. If the Picturehouse chain would show more consideration to their staff and to the views of locals and consider paying the LLW then this would benefit them massively in terms of good PR.

Also if you are very broke South East London has a good amount of free film events which are brilliant and often show fairly up to date films completely for free - look up Camberwell, Herne Hill or Peckham and Nunhead free film festivals (unless you are also too scared to go to Camberwell as well as Peckham that is)

Perhaps you should look into starting an East Dulwich free film festival.

Please don't forget that they are owned by Cineworld....with profits last year of ?40m so I think they might just about survive. As Cella said, it would be good if they paid their staff properly.

...but you don't have to pay ?40 upfront for the privilege of buying a ticket at Odeon. Never thought I'd be holding Odeon up as an example of good practice!

I suspect the OP was making a little bit of mischeif here, especially in using the word elitist.

But just to add that yesterday we took our daughter to the Ritzy for a special showing of "Home" aimed at kids with ASD. They have the sound lower to it's not such a sensory assault, and they skip the ads.

This is an inclusive not elitist thing to do.

Non-members pay ?2 more. On a Monday a Picturehouse member will pay 51p more than the Plex!

So, not in line with Odeon Surrey Quays then....

P.S. I know it wasn't you that made the original claim

According to the last general election, in ED we still like (champagne) Socialism.

  • 3 weeks later...

I went for the first time this afternoon - have to say it is worth paying more than going to Peckham Plex - seats were really comfortable and they've clearly put a lot of work into developing the building.

Wasn't too impressed by them telling me the smallest box of popcorn was ?3.95 and when I pointed at the small box behind the chap serving me and said "that's ?3.95?", he said "oh, that's ?1.90"... What word was I meant to use to get the smallest one?? Perhaps ask for a children's portion?

But the Monday afternoon prices are cheap enough I'm willing to forgive - looks like there's a few good films coming up too.

I don't like the prices of the ED Picturehouse particularly either but if that's their market price it's up to them and I don't particularly blame them for it - it's East Dulwich after all so you can put a couple of quid on pretty much anything you buy.

However you can vote with your feet and try the South London Film Club network: https://selondonfilmclubs.wordpress.com/. Lots of interesting films in interesting places at a more reasonable price. They are on twitter too: @SELondonFilm.

Fancy watching the latest Terminator. Cheesy I know, but fun, mindless cinematic entertainment for an evening.

Our picturehouse isn't showing it.

Instead, one of it's three precious screens is showing.. Amy (Amy Winehouse documentary).

Also available for viewing this evening is.. Love & Mercy (a biography of Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys).

I like a bit of Beach Boys as much as the next person, but really?

Hi All,

I must say that the new cinema is posh, very much part of new East Dulwich; but after living here for 35 years I'm glad I don't have to go all the way to The Ritzy for a great cinema anymore.

And, by the way, for anyone of my age group (60) plus, we are able to see the latest films in comfort on a Thursday afternoon for only ?4.00 (no membership fee). That's great value as far as I'm concerned and only ?1 more 3D.

Cheers.

PS: I am a bit surprised that 'that lot' in Dulwich Village are posting stuff on our forum. For years they wouldn't cross Lordship Lane in case they got mugged. As for Pecham, that's probably No Go to them still. Peckham's a pretty decent are now.

I was in town today and went to the new Picturehouse Central. It looked fab. ?14.40 (member) for a popcorn, bag of crisps, beer and cinema ticket. Not much you can do for that price in Central London.

So it's ?6 a ticket in town? Better value than the ED one, that's for sure.

    • Perhaps Gooseygreeny was not familiar with the wildlife before Gala was imposed on the park, since when its value to wildlife has deteriorated. The Park had never been disturbed before, as the council had respected it as a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation, so only the Common was licensed by them as a site for events. The first time Gala held their event, there was a tree with woodpeckers nesting in it right in the middle of the main field they used and thrushes, blackbirds and great tits nesting within the shrubs and trees immediately surrounding the field. The woodpeckers were thriving on ants from the anthills in the grass. To those of us who used to enjoy watching the wildlife, it was very obviously a Site of Importance for a variety of birds. Despite being accessed by the public and their dogs, it had been relatively undisturbed,  which was one of the main reasons why it was so special and why I have been opposed to the Gala festival being held during the bird nesting season.
