Hmm, don't get me started.

As a child of the early '70s, I was happily suckled on the lyrical offerings of everybody from Yellowman, U-Roy, The Mighty Diamonds, Alton Ellis, 'Sir' Dennis Brown, Sugar Minnott, Horace Andy, Gregory Isaccs, Ken Boothe, the list goes on.

I still have most of the aformentioned artists on vinyl too. Oh time to slap on the 1210s, look what you've gone and done! I'm getting excited. Nurse! Sorry I tend not to get out much...

What about Big Youth, I Roy, Eastwood and Saint (Shame and Scandal in de Family)? Great Stuff!

Ladymuck, we are on the same page, dancing to the same riddim.

The list is truly endless. The Coxsone/ Studio 1 era spawned a generation of peerless vocalists that the world will never see the like of again. In truth it's an immense and largely unreported slice of the UK's contemporary musical history. But the truth will out!

RANT OVER

So how did you get bitten by the bug?

I can't believe it - David Roddigan STILL around...he must be about 110 years old! "David...you BAD...I man GLAD"...remember that jingle? No? ....you are probably too young then...

Ya Man!

Well, I attended a predominantly "black" secondary school in Croydon...it was a case of "if you can't beat em - join em"...I had NO problem "joining"...and then, a short while after leaving school I went off and married this delicious black man (to the utter horror of my bigoted father!)...best decision of my life!

How about YOU - how did YOU get into it? (Every minute detail please!)

ribbit!

:))Oh my Giddy Aunt, I haven't heard "RIBBIT" in YEARS...takes me back...

What about this one: "There are 5,000 versions of dis riddim sir...well thank you Mr. Smiley"...remember it? NO? Too young!

AUGUSTUS PABLO...AUGUSTUS PABLO...no-body has mentioned AUGUSTUS PABLO...to my mind he was absolutely UNIQUE with that little mouth organ thingy he used to play...his version of "Too Late to Turn Back Now" STILL sends shivers all over my body when I hear it...that's it, he's going on tomorrow (or later today rather - have just seen the time!). Wow this trip down memory lane has been very therapeutic. Time to hit the sack I think (as opposed to "Hit the Road Jack" - Big Youth!).

Goodnight all you 70s reggae lovers (incidentally, don't you think that today's reggae sucks - it has no SOUL, no FEELING, and is rather TUNELESS - in my humble opinion).

    • To be honest, pal, it's not good being a fan of a local business and then not go there. One on hand, the barber shop literally next door to Romeo Jones started serving coffee. The Crown and Greyhound and Rocca serve coffee. Redemption Coffee opened up not far away, and then also Megan's next door to that. DVillage was serving coffee (but wasn't very popular), as was Au Ciel (which is). Maybe also Heritage Cheese, I don't know. There's also Flotsam and Jetsam doing coffee and sandwiches at Dulwich Picture Gallery in the other direction. The whole of Dulwich Village serves coffee. And yet on the other hand, there are enough punters to support all good coffee shops. With the exception of Rocca and Megan's (which are both big spaces) and C&G (which does coffee like everything else - slow and with bad service), all these places regularly get queues out the door. Gail's often has big queues and yet very few people crossed the street to Romeo Jones (which was much better)... Half the staff at Gail's are perfectly fine and efficient. The other half are pretty offhand and rude. It's certainly not welcoming or friendly service. But they're certainly hard working, and no doubt raking the money in for Luke Johnson...
    • Well according to a newspaper article, Gail’s is opening 10 shops in London,,, yup Dulwich is named 10/5 I seem to recall with others in London opening at 7 am…!, Guess that is to capture workers coming off all night shift. Offering free mince pies until they run out.. So very sad to hear about Romeo Jones… been a customer since the opening, any idea where Patrick has gone or details… please pm me.    What is going to be in its place…. Will be around in Jan…umm village is changing….
    • interesting the police said "the car was in demand at the moment" what make/model is that?
    • Just be careful to know exactly what they cover and the limits. i use Many Pets and Medivet, as I think one of the vets is exceptionally good. Some of the NHV are, but I’ve had a couple I’ve not liked at all.  I need consistency and to feel that they actually care more about the animals than the money.
