It's just over three years since the forum was set up and in that time it has grown from a few visitors a day to over 3,000 unique visitors everyday and over 11,000 registered users. There is on average about 400 - 500 messages posted everyday and for myself, Admin and the team who run it, it is a labour of love and sometimes quite tiring.

In the background we have had to deal with libel threats, username change requests, moving posts in the wrong section, non-East Dulwich companies advertising themselves, abusive messages, complaints about the word "cookwank", monitoring reported posts, sever overloads, BigBadWolf, threats against Admin, police requests to remove posts, local businesses being upset, spam and other issues etc etc. However, and I say this with hand on heart, it's worth it because despite all that the forum is a fun and useful place for the people of East Dulwich and I'm proud of what it's achieved.

Anyway, I've decided to have a holiday and from midnight Wednesday 14th October to midnight Monday 2nd November the East Dulwich Forum will be resting and therefore unavailable. The forum will be replaced by a notice saying something like "Gone on holiday for a couple of weeks".

Sorry if it causes any inconvenience but it will be great for us to have a break, a proper break, and not have to worry about things going wrong on the forum.

I'll make this message more prominent nearer the time so everyone knows about it but I thought I should let the news trickle out initially.

Edited to say its Monday 2nd November not Monday 1st November

Mark, can you not jsut disable user authentication for the 2 weeks so it's effectively read only - as it may prove useful for phone numbers when people need to trawl through recommendations for various bits of plumbing, building etc etc... just a thought

I could but I won't, there could be something on here that opens up a can of worms when we're all having a break. I don't want that.

Given Mike's sudden realisation about the suspension of the forum , isn't it probably true that many others won't have read this notice - I'm thinking especially in the family sections where arrangements are often made

is it worth circulating the news more widely?

    • Another shout out for Milk & More - their app allows you to alter the order, add or subtract to it and also to schedule holiday stops without having to leave messages in bottle - so more secure. You do have to set up a direct debit with them, but I haven't had any problems with that myself. I have had one or two missed or late deliveries in several years, but not really a problem - only very occasional and caused mainly by delivery-person illness. And very much feels like an old-fashioned milk delivery. They do special seasonal offers as well. More expensive than the cheapest of the super market milk prices, but for that its at your door, fresh and no bother.
    • Enjoying the nostalgia and memories.  As with others, we get ours through Milk and More (is part of big co, so there is that against it, but it's hardly a secret/niche thing) - returnable glass bottles of milk, orange juice, yoghurt, and much more besides (as per the name). And yes it comes in the middle of the night in an electric vehicle. So can still get out nostalgia fix, doubled when the Riverford chap comes too.
    • This sounds like what goes on at Tessa Jowell GP surgery as well as others.   If you can flag yourself up as a ‘vulnerable’ patient or one that can’t use Apps for whatever reason etc then you can usually make appts by phone. They would have to make allowances. Quote the Equality Act 2010,  reasonable adjustments section.
    • Its part of a change all Doctor surgery's are undergoing.  The goverment want to stop the 8am scramble for an appointment, and its not just restricted to the Gardens. Sadly, it does impact some who are not digitally savy.
