Mark
Dulwich Community Council has made an award to provide a new centrepiece for the roundabout. There is a questionnaire attached to this posting with which you can let your thoughts be known on their suggestions. You can also pick one up in Healthmatters*, 47 Lordship Lane. Please note these must be returned to the council by 22 JUNE which is only a couple of days away.*they also sell East Dulwich postcards Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/925-goose-green-roundabout-what-happens-next/ Share on other sites
monica
I remember many moons ago when i use to trip out of the edt, sitting on the roundabout with other people who use to trip out and we use to have a picnic,it would be so nice us the peeps of the edt about 1am with our light refreshments on the goose green roundabout making conversation and having a dance,i think they should have a theme every month on the roundabout,so 1 month we would have salsa and tequila, then southern comform and jazz,oh the memories of my mispent and oblivious 20s aahh Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/925-goose-green-roundabout-what-happens-next/#findComment-23139 Share on other sites

Quaywe
I still reckon the cast iron floral decorated "Welcome to East Dulwich" arch is the go. TillieTrotter
That sounds very West Sussex Dahling!! Although also sounds quite nice. I like the idea of a statue of William Blake personally. Keef
Just a nice Narnia style lamp post! I think there's something really special about them! Eileen
why do we have to have anything in the centre of the roundabout? I like it the way it is. The Council are asking for people to choose between a lamp post, a tree a sculpture or a signpost, though I notice they don't give the option of no change. Won't objects as suggested by the Council distract drivers when they should have all their focus on driving safely in that area? I have suggested instead (idea passed on to me by a trader in Lordship Lane) that there could be solar powered (energy efficient) lighting fitted into the roundabout wall itself. It would not be intrusive as the other suggestions would be, and it would make the roundabout more visible at night and also, if done well, could be very attractive. I hope others wil support this idea in their comments to the Council to make sure it gets examined. Keef
That is a good idea. I would like to point out though that no change would technically mean having the lamp post, as that's what's always been there, just not in it's full glory you could say ;-) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/925-goose-green-roundabout-what-happens-next/#findComment-23457 Share on other sites
macroban
This morning there is no lamp post, not even a lamp post stump. It's not been there for weeks. There is, however, an attractive flower bed - a good "do nothing" option. Keef
No, it was taken away a few months back I think.... It hadn't been a proper lampost in years... More of a stump :-S Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/925-goose-green-roundabout-what-happens-next/#findComment-23477 Share on other sites
Alan Dale
I think that we should ask for a massive statue of Nelson Mandela. Ken's always trying to put up Mandela Statues. If we helped him out then that would curry favour at City Hall and might help the lobby for improved transport links. AB
How about some sort of landmark. Not like the cat in Catford (god forbid), but maybe a sort of angel of East Dulwich, designed by a local artist. Also should get rid of the enormous arrows that are currently on the roundabout (isn't it obvious which way to go?)Mrs AB would agree with Keef about the Narnia lamp though. Alan Dale
Gets my vote.Who's in the chair though? If it's a three wheel Phil and Ted's then there will need to be two passengers... spirit
My parter thinks they should erect a statue of the Fat Boy of Peckham, Channel 4 website says: "The Fat Boy of Peckham, an obese child who eventually weighed over 40 stone, joined a freak show when his mother could no longer afford to feed him. At the Nottingham Goose Fair he met and married Leonie the Lion-faced Lady. They had several children who inherited neither of their parents' unusual characteristics."He was a popular local celebrity and toured the UK with Chaplin apparently, led quite an interesting life all in all though died prematurely. Pretty un-PC but interesting nonetheless. But maybe he should be reserved a spot on Peckham Rye. jackangel
The roundabout looks really good today. Whoever maintains it is talented and deserves thanks. If we have to despoil it, perhaps we could have a circular pissoir there to replace the Gents behind the tree on Goose Green. The pissoir would have no top or bottom so that those out of ED uniform (Cargo shorts and Birkenstocks) could be easily identified and pelted by outsitters at the EDT whilst otherwise occupied. Tom
pls no modern art (fart).I liked the old lampost stump, kind of shabby & fun. I saw a pic of the orriginal on this forum and it was pretty tall - i would love to see it replicated.
