  1. What has Denmark Hill station got to do with the Olympics? Weekend train closures have been common for the past 10 years or so - also nothing to do with the Olympics as far as I know.

It's a low wage for sure - but well above the (Indian) government-defined poverty threshold of 0.6 USD (~40p) a day.

  4. Concentrated hydrochloric acid. Hair removal, exfoliation, and scent all in one.

Agreed. We'll be replacing one shop which I never, ever use. With one which I will probably use occasionally. And a scruffy building will be getting a bit of a facelift into the bargain. So from my personal perspective, it's good news. One chain replacing another does not mean the end of LL as we know it. In fact, I suspect that the main losers will be Sainsburys Local and Co-op.
  6. Glad most people realise that meister is acting like a plonker. It is no more racist than it is "heightist", ageist, or discriminatory against those who tend to hang around in groups of three. Please can people stop posting such ridiculous fucking nonsense.
  7. I think it's common knowledge that giving money to a homeless charity is wiser than giving it to someone on the street.
  8. Plenty of posters seem happy to turn threads into political arguments with James. It's not just councillors bickering amongst themselves.
  9. The Victoria Inn in Peckham is the only local place worth recommending.
  10. You misunderstand what I'm saying. I'm not claiming that M&S is anything special. I was simply responding to puwetter's post, "think about the people who cant afford your M&S store" - I proposed a solution.
  11. There is an Asda on Rye Lane, and another on Old Kent Road. But my main point was that Iceland do home delivery, so you can still get your frozen fish and veg (or indeed your chicken tikka lasagne or doner kebab pizza). Of course I realise that alternative locations or home delivery may not suit some people as well as the local store, but it's hardly the end of the world.

  13. I would agree that M&S would be more of a "destination" shop than Iceland. Iceland stores are a lot more common in South London. Believe me, if M&S do open up, the shop will be absolutely rammed.

    Internet TVs?

That was when they > were so excited about HDMI they put the logo on > the front of the telly. Can't be 12 years old, HDMI devices didn't even appear on the shelves until 2004-ish. In 2003 I bought a Toshiba 30 inch LCD TV (sans HDMI) for ?1000... seems unbelievable now. Within a year it was obsolete.

    Internet TVs?

I think getting a "smart" TV with iplayer/netflix/lovefilm/etc is a good idea if you want to de-clutter and minimise things the kids can destroy. But bear in mind that the selection of films on these online streaming services is pretty bad.
  16. I always enjoy carbonara... fry bacon/pancetta with onions, garlic, mushrooms. Beat a couple of eggs together with grated cheese and a little bit of cream/creme fraiche/ricotta. Add it all to a pan of piping hot spaghetti with plenty of salt and pepper.
  17. Don't hold your breath, weekend service (Sunday in particular) has been intermittent for as long as I've been here - almost 10 years. This already is normal.
  18. It's never wise to finger the wrong girl.
  19. Move the bins, but don't park your own car there - various other people will use the space, so your neighbour won't be able to blame a single person. Hopefully the guy will eventually give up.
  20. minder Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Jeremy, going back to your comment on the first > page; do you really think people are going to go > all the way to park in Sainsburys, just to shop in > a Marks & Sparks on Lordship Lane? Sorry, that's not what I meant... I meant that if parking is important to you, use Sainsburys instead. Most of the food is not that much different.
  21. Gidget Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > It's for people who don't cook and have > lots of disposable income. Yeah, but so what? Some people aren't interesting in cooking, some people don't have the time to cook every night. It's not a crime. I'd rather spend ?4 on something OK-ish from M&S than ?1.50 on something utterly revolting from Iceland.
  22. For me the positives outweigh the negatives. I don't see why it should have a huge impact on our local businesses - M&S offer something different, and specialise in convenience food. There will of course be a small impact, but generally I can't see customers bypassing William Rose/Moxons/Pretty Traditional/Cheese Block in favour of M&S. If you want to park somewhere, drive 5 mins down the road to the large Sainsburys instead. Yes it may cause more traffic and parking issues, but that's the price you pay for living in an area with good shops. The building (including the office space above) is pretty ugly at the moment, hopefully the work will leave us with a more attractive high street.
  23. Finally made it to Honest Burgers (Brixton Village) on the weekend, really tasty burger and reasonable value.
  24. e-dealer, I do agree that restaurants/pubs should in general be cheaper here in the suburbs than in central London. However... surely most food outlets around Leicester Square are poor quality tourist places, right?
  25. Maybe Sopers in Nunhead (cheaper than Moxons and better selection).
