  1. Oh I don't know... perhaps the debate is not without merit. To settle it once and for all, perhaps the OP should try using it frequently throughout various parts of south London over the next few weeks. Post back in a month's time to let us know how it's going.
  2. London's Burning is another good Clash one. Strange Town is another good one by The Jam. London by The Smiths (er... is it actually about London though?) Bad Moon Rising always makes me think of London because of American Werewolf in London...

Somehow I doubt they will send the forensics over... Probably kids with an air gun or slingshot. Scary, but I'm sure it's an isolated incident.
  4. A nice B&B would be a good one - but maybe it would be hard to make it work with reasonable rates, given local house prices. An indie cinema would be awesome. One which sells warm toffee popcorn, fresh smoothies, and cakes. And beer. A record shop comes up time and time again, but much as it pains me to admit it, the local record shop we remember from our youths probably isn't a viable business these days - unless you combine it with games, electronics, DVDs, etc.

  6. Typical tabloid nonsense - fuss over nothing. Mis-spelling Janes as James is not even remotely news-worthy!
  7. Racism is not always black and white (worst pun of the week award). There is a whole spectrum of beliefs and attitudes out there... and although his views often left a bitter taste in the mouth, neither was he the most offensive person I am ever likely to encounter. Pigeonholing him as an out-and-out racist is not necessarily accurate or fair. I don't think he is a particularly rare breed. In fact, he probably speaks for a much greater proportion of the community than a lot of us here would like to acknowledge. He quite possibly mixes in social circles where they regularly bemoan the demise of traditional English society, and where immigration is blamed for many of the country's problems. Such people undoubtedly do not consider themselves to be racist... but Tony is quite obviously coming from a totally different frame of reference than most of us. Sometimes discussing these things (as tricky as it was sometimes with Tony) is more constructive than accusations of racism.
  8. It's true - Ewan McGregor lives in ED. I hear George Clooney is also on the lookout for a holiday residence in the area (he's fed up with Lake Como, apparently). The most desirable area for Hollywood's A-List is said to be around Goodrich Road, because of the close proximity to state primary schools, Le Moulin, and the DIY shop. Although insiders say that Clooney may seek to buck the trend, and go for a nice 2-bed flat above Somerfield.
  9. skidmarks is a top bloke - we had a good natter at the curry club a couple of months back!
  10. I think there are a few people on here who are pro-squatting... would be interesting to hear their views. I guess if they're "good squatters" then they might just quietly leave when asked, but I remain cynical. If I was in your position, I would be tempted to wait until they are out of the house, then clear out their stuff and change the locks. I think it would technically be illegal though. If you contact the police or council, then I would think it is likely to result in a lengthy legal process.
  11. That's why I don't post on here from my Blackberry...
  12. I must apologise for not making it along to the last one, despite saying that I was definitely coming! I had a boiler repair guy in, and he didn't finish until well after 8pm. Unfortunately it's quite unlikely I'll make it along to this one, as my girlfriend is going in for an operation the day before, and I need to look after her!

  14. PetuniaButtons Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I heard that egg boxes make for good sound insulations I know you were only taking the piss, but... no they don't! And it's one of the worst possible fire hazards... short of dousing your room with petrol and filling it with fireworks.
  15. If you want to learn an instrument, you really need to practise most days... so there'd be no point using a rehearsal room. Besides, most rehearsal rooms costs >?10 an hour, and you'll probably be next door to a metal band or something. My advice - speak to your neighbours and ask what the best time of day is, and if there's any part of the house you should avoid practising in (i.e. directly below their bedroom or lounge). You could try experimenting with blankets, curtains, soft furnishings, etc to try and absorb some of the sound. If you own the flat, you might want to consider putting a soundproof dummy ceiling in one room.

  20. It seems highly unlikely, it's hard enough finding pubs showing fights with British boxers. But let me know if you find anywhere...
  21. I'm sure over the next few months/weeks, we can re-open the following debates: ED Deli vs Greggs William Rose vs Iceland Lordship Lane vs Bromley
  22. No. Midnight = 12am = 00:00. Midnight is the FIRST time of the day. Otherwise it would be 24:00, not 00:00. Midnight on the 14th has been and gone.
  23. Keef Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > We're still here? I'd assumed midnight on the 14th > meant last night. Cool, another day. You're right. Can we trust Mark/Admin ever again? Maybe this whole thing is a hoax, and it will still be here tomorrow.
  24. Good to see you back Louisa. I can tell you're still getting into the swing of things after your break... I'm sure you've got more to give, but this one will do nicely for now!
  25. Well... we do get quite a few daft posts on this forum, I wouldn't be surprised if someone taking a quick glance got a less-than-favourable impression.
